Book Instruments of the Divinity

Download or read book Instruments of the Divinity written by Christopher van Ginhoven Rey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Instruments of the Divinity, Christopher van Ginhoven Rey shows that an important reflection on God’s providential praxis animates the foundational documents of the Society of Jesus. Focusing on Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s conception of Jesuits as the instruments of a laboring God, the book explores the philosophical and theological roots of the metaphor of the instrument and its place in the social imaginary of the Jesuit order. Close readings of the Spiritual Exercises, the Jesuit Constitutions, and a selection of letters by Ignatius call attention to the existence of a rhetoric of instrumentality that provides the basis for the Society’s project of instruction, its loving affirmation of the world, and its attempts to differentiate itself from its monastic predecessors.

Book A Comparative Study of the Bhagavad g t and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on the Process of Spiritual Liberation

Download or read book A Comparative Study of the Bhagavad g t and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on the Process of Spiritual Liberation written by Varghese Malpan and published by Pontificia Univ. Gregoriana. This book was released on 1992 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Second Vatican Council, there has been within the Indian Church a growing interest in and concern for whatever is of perennial value in Hinduism. Keeping this in mind, the present study aims at comparing and contrasting the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola on the process of spiritual liberation. It is striking that in these two books under investigation the process of spiritual liberation is interwoven with the vision of service, the knowledge of God and His ways, and the experience of the love of God. The study makes use of the comparative method which incorporates historical, exegetical and critical analyses of the relevant texts of the two sources.

Book The Spacious Word

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ricardo Padrón
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2004-02
  • ISBN : 9780226644332
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book The Spacious Word written by Ricardo Padrón and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spacious Word explores the history of Iberian expansion into the Americas as seen through maps and cartographic literature, and considers the relationship between early Spanish ideas of the world and the origins of European colonialism. Spanish mapmakers and writers, as Padrón shows, clung to a much older idea of space that was based on the itineraries of travel narratives and medieval navigational techniques. Padrón contends too that maps and geographic writings heavily influenced the Spanish imperial imagination. During the early modern period, the idea of "America" was still something being invented in the minds of Europeans. Maps of the New World, letters from explorers of indigenous civilizations, and poems dramatizing the conquest of distant lands, then, helped Spain to redefine itself both geographically and imaginatively as an Atlantic and even global empire. In turn, such literature had a profound influence on Spanish ideas of nationhood, most significantly its own. Elegantly conceived and meticulously researched, The Spacious Word will be of enormous interest to historians of Spain, early modern literature, and cartography.
