Book Kingdom on Mount Cameroon

Download or read book Kingdom on Mount Cameroon written by Edwin Ardener and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bakweri people of Mount Cameroon, an active volcano on the coast of West Africa a few degrees north of the equator, have had a varied and at times exciting history which has brought them into contact, not only with other West African peoples, but with merchants, missionaries, soldiers and administrators from Portugal, Holland, England, Jamaica, Sweden, Germany and more recently France. Edwin Ardener, the distinguished social anthropologist who spoke their language, wrote a number of studies on the culture and history of the Bakweri kingdom. Some unpublished writings, and some published but now out of print materials are here brought together for the first time. The book covers the early contacts with the Portuguese and Dutch from the seventeenth century, the arrival of the missionaries in the nineteenth century, the dramatic defeat of the first German punitive expedition, the subsequent establishment by the Germans of the plantation system, and the British Trusteeship period until independence in 1961 as part of the Federal Republic of Cameroon.

Book excerpt: If Cameroon is "Africa in miniature," then understanding this California-sized coastal nation takes one closer to capturing the story of this remarkable continent. Serving as a European trade portal, Cameroon boasts a rich, cross-cultural history that has fostered a society with a wide range of lifestyles and belief systems. As early as the fifth century b.c., curious travelers sailed along the coast to watch Cameroon's volcano erupt. But it wasn't until the Portuguese arrived on the coast in 1472 that the country became a launching point for the slave trade. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Germans, and later French and British colonists, occupied and westernized Cameroon. Cameroon gained its independence in 1960. Today it is among the most stable countries of West Africa.

Book The Congo and the Cameroons

Download or read book The Congo and the Cameroons written by Mary Kingsley and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemptuous of Europe's 'civilising mission' in Africa, Mary Kingsley's (1862-1900) extraordinary journeys through tropical west Africa are a remarkable record, both of a world which has vanished and of a writer and explorer of immense bravery, wit and humanity. Paddling through mangrove swamps, fending off crocodiles, climbing Mount Cameroon, Kingsley is both admirable and funny. Great Journeys allows readers to travel both around the planet and back through the centuries – but also back into ideas and worlds frightening, ruthless and cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things: Great civilisations, walls of ice, violent and implacable jungles, deserts and mountains, multitudes of birds and flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends and stories were treated as facts and in which so much was still to be discovered.

Book Observing the Volcano World

Download or read book Observing the Volcano World written by Carina J. Fearnley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a comprehensive overview of volcanic crisis research, the goal being to establish ways of successfully applying volcanology in practice and to identify areas that need to be addressed for future progress. It shows how volcano crises are managed in practice, and helps to establish best practices. Consequently the book brings together authors from all over the globe who work with volcanoes, ranging from observatory volcanologists, disaster practitioners and government officials to NGO-based and government practitioners to address three key aspects of volcanic crises. First, the book explores the unique nature of volcanic hazards, which makes them a particularly challenging threat to forecast and manage, due in part to their varying spatial and temporal characteristics. Second, it presents lessons learned on how to best manage volcanic events based on a number of crises that have shaped our understanding of volcanic hazards and crises management. Third, it discusses the diverse and wide-ranging aspects of communication involved in crises, which merge old practices and new technologies to accommodate an increasingly challenging and globalised world. The information and insights presented here are essential to tapping established knowledge, moving towards more robust volcanic crises management, and understanding how the volcanic world is perceived from a range of standpoints and contexts around the globe.

Book excerpt: This is a story of love and family that involved a three month visit to Cameroon, a country that most Americans have a hard time finding on a map. Relatively few visitors find their way here since most tours focus on the plains of East Africa. Cameroon is located on the Gulf of Biafra just under the great bulge of West Africa. It is roughly knife shaped and plunges deeply into the heart of central Africa. It contains within its border almost every animal and habitat that can be found anywhere on the continent.

She went to West Africa in 1893 and again in 1895, to investigate the beliefs and customs of the inland tribes and also to collect zoological specimens. She was appalled by the 'thin veneer of rubbishy white culture' imposed by British officials and was not afraid to say so.

From the mighty Sahara Desert in the north to the dense equatorial jungles of the Congo and the open grasslands of Southern Africa, Dan turned his biggest dream into reality. Over the course of three years Dan's second major expedition spanned fifty-four thousand miles through thirty-five unique African countries. THE ADVENTURE WAS A THOUSAND TIMES BIGGER THAN HE DREAMED POSSIBLE. After exploring the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Argentina Dan became hooked on the freedom of global overland travel, and he only wanted more. New languages, exotic foods, stunning landscapes and local people with an entirely different outlook became Dan's everyday life. As the months turned into years, through highlights and despair Dan gained a new appreciation for what it truly means to be alive. Viewing our modern world through African eyes gave Dan a new perspective, and he was pulled in by the endless joy, laughter and kindness at every turn. While the landscapes and wildlife are undeniably breathtaking, it is the natural warmth of the African people that is truly unforgettable. All across the continent Dan was welcomed with love and generosity, and now he will never be the same.
