Book Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon Issues in Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon Issues in Natural Resource Management written by Mbifung Lambi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The densely populated Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon remains one of the regions with the greatest land degradation problems in the country. Factors responsible for this include climate change, the hilly nature or topographic layout of the land, and human interference through overgrazing, destructive agricultural practices and the impact of deforestation. This detailed study of resource management and its ecological challenges in the Bamenda Highlands, stresses an important link between falling food output and soil deterioration. While most areas in this predominantly agricultural region enjoy food abundance, the inhabitants of high-density infertile, rugged mountainous areas are forced to resort to double cropping and intensified land exploitation that leave little room for soil regeneration. The population problem in relation to land degradation is infinitely more complicated than the region's sheer ability to produce enough food supply. The authors make a strong case for a delicate balance between human agency and environmental protection in this highly populated and physically challenging region where land is a precious resource and land conflicts are common.

Book excerpt: Cameroon is a country in central Africa that is bordered by Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, Equatorial Guinea to the south, and Gabon to the southwest. It has a diverse geography, including coastal plains, rainforests, savannas, and the volcanic peaks of Mount Cameroon in the west. Cameroon is home to over 250 different ethnic groups, each with its own language and cultural traditions. French and English are both official languages in the country, reflecting its colonial history as a protectorate of Germany, then a League of Nations mandate administered by France and Britain before it gained independence in 1960. Cameroon is one of the most developed countries in the region, with a relatively stable political system and a growing economy based on natural resources such as oil, cocoa, and timber. However, it faces many social and economic challenges, including high levels of poverty, inequality, and corruption. Despite this, Cameroon has a vibrant arts and music scene, and has produced famous cultural figures such as author Mongo Beti and musician Manu Dibango. Its national football team, known as the Indomitable Lions, has also achieved international success, winning the Africa Cup of Nations five times.

Book excerpt: If Cameroon is "Africa in miniature," then understanding this California-sized coastal nation takes one closer to capturing the story of this remarkable continent. Serving as a European trade portal, Cameroon boasts a rich, cross-cultural history that has fostered a society with a wide range of lifestyles and belief systems. As early as the fifth century b.c., curious travelers sailed along the coast to watch Cameroon's volcano erupt. But it wasn't until the Portuguese arrived on the coast in 1472 that the country became a launching point for the slave trade. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Germans, and later French and British colonists, occupied and westernized Cameroon. Cameroon gained its independence in 1960. Today it is among the most stable countries of West Africa.
