Book excerpt: Protected areas (PAs) are a cornerstone of conservation policy and have been established worldwide in order to mitigate the current environmental crisis. Although PAs are usually effective at avoiding habitat conversion, their effectiveness at safeguarding local biodiversity is less clear. Furthermore, a substantial number of PAs face threats related to anthropogenic pressures that can erode the biodiversity they aim to protect. In this thesis, I use camera trap data from a mosaic of protected areas in the Brazilian Cerrado to investigate PA effectiveness and the influence of human disturbance on mammal species. Additionally, I assess the relationship between occupancy and density estimates to improve the understanding of camera trap-derived metrics in wildlife research. Overall, I surveyed 517 camera trap sites distributed across seven PAs under two contrasting types of management, totaling more than 25,000 survey days. My results revealed that PA type has a strong effect on the mammal community studied, with much higher species richness and occupancy probability in strict than in multiple-use PAs, particularly for larger and threatened mammals. I also found that succession stage of the savanna vegetation (old growth vs secondary) in a strict PA did not have a negative impact on species occupancy, and that secondary savannas supported a diverse mammal community. Despite the strong effect of PA type on the spatial distribution of mammals, I found little evidence that anthropogenic pressure influenced species" activity patterns, with few species shifting to being more nocturnal in multiple-use PAs or closer to households. Finally, my results indicated that occupancy and density estimates obtained from camera trap data tend to have a species-specific positive relationship and that under certain circumstances camera trap-derived occupancy can reflect variation in species" abundance across the landscape.

Through insularization, habitat loss, and edge effects, habitat fragmentation threatens biodiversity and increases the risk of local extinction. Wildlife corridors mitigate many of these threats by providing connectivity between larger fragments, or 2islands.3 Conservation efforts are often aimed at protecting these corridors, although it is not always possible to tell which corridors are in greater need of protection based on size and shape alone. Prioritizing corridors for conservation more often relies on direct examination of the species occupying them. Automated camera trap surveys are often used to collect population data, such as density and diversity, in order to assess wildlife corridor effectiveness. However, little standardization exists for examining multiple diverse taxa in a single survey. In this study, I investigated whether baiting camera traps to maximize detection frequency for carnivores and omnivores affects detection frequency for herbivores. I replicated camera trap surveys with and without bait throughout wildlife corridors and forest fragments within the Town of Red Hook, New York to examine how habitat type, bait status, and edge-to-area ratio affected estimations of species richness and relative density across 10 terrestrial vertebrate species. I found that while neither bait status nor habitat type affected observed population density of any species, corridors and non-baited traps reported higher species richness than islands and baited traps. Furthermore, I found that corridors showed higher sensitivity to seasonal changes than islands in terms of detection frequency. These results support that density and species richness are both important metrics for examining corridor health. They also highlight the importance of bait choice and seasonal effects in terms of future study design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research shows that most mammals are reduced in fragmented forests, particularly species averse to human-modified landscapes. Since felids are elusive, sometimes nocturnal, and usually inhabit interior forest away from human activity, they can be difficult to study through in-person field observations. One effective approach to study felids is through camera trapping, where the captured images can be used to identify individuals of certain tropical felid species by their spots and bot fly warbles. To better understand the impacts of forest fragmentation on felids, the presence and distribution of both felids and their prey species were studied across a modified tropical forest gradient in the Piedras region of Madre de Dios, Peru. The goal of this study was to compare and relate species abundance and species diversity data for captured Peruvian mammals in response to land use and land cover changes (LUCC), specifically for jaguar, puma, and ocelot. Jaguar home range, distribution, and density estimates were also made using the program Camera Base. Twenty-three terrestrial mammal species were identified and assigned capture frequencies ranging from .04 to 80.7 (number of photos/1000 camera stations nights). Density of jaguars was estimated using the 8 individuals identified and data analysis in both Camera Base and DENSITY. The Jackknife Mh estimator with MMDM (mean maximum distance moved) was used to estimate jaguar density at approximately 5.05 jaguars/100 sq km. Results of this research indicate healthy populations of jaguar and ocelot, and support the theory that felids are using human modified areas for movement, habitat, and hunting. In addition, seasonally used and minimally fragmented forests in the Piedras hold abundant biodiversity and can act as corridors between core habitat and protected areas for medium and large-sized mammals. Given the demonstrated diversity and vulnerability of the Piedras region, and that it represents one of the largest unprotected and largely intact tropical rainforests in Peru, this research shows both the importance of the region in supporting robust felid populations and the urgency needed to increase the protection of the region's species and forests. The vast majority of studies looking at felids occur in protected areas like national parks, so monitoring felids in unprotected areas as a comparison is also vital.
