Book Photography Bearing Witness and the Yugoslav Wars 1988 2021

Download or read book Photography Bearing Witness and the Yugoslav Wars 1988 2021 written by Paul Lowe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining case studies with theoretical and philosophical insights, this book explores the role of photography in representing conflict and genocide, both during and after the break-up of Yugoslavia. Concentrating on the photographer, this book considers the practice of photojournalism rather than simply in terms of its consumption and use by the media. The experiences and working methods of photographers in the field are analysed, showing how practitioners conceptualised their work and responded to larger questions about neutrality and moral responsibility. Presenting this ‘active’ form of witness, author Paul Lowe investigates a crucial ethical paradox faced by photojournalists. Moving beyond the end of the Yugoslav Wars in 2001, this book also considers the therapeutic and validating potential of photography for survivors, featuring photographers whose work centres on memory and reconciliation. Based on archival research, close reading and discourse analyses of photographs, and interviews with a range of international photographers, this book explores how photography from this period has been used and remediated in editorial photojournalism, fine art documentary and advocacy photography. This book will be of interest to scholars in the history of photography, art and visual culture, and photojournalism.

Book Migrant Languages in Education

Download or read book Migrant Languages in Education written by Anna Malandrino and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines language education policy in European migrant-hosting countries. By applying the Multiple Streams Framework to detailed case studies on Austria and Italy, it sheds light on the factors and processes that innovate education policy. The book illustrates an education policy design that values language diversity and inclusion, and compares underlying policymaking processes with less innovative experiences. Combining empirical analysis and qualitative research methods, it assesses the ways in which language is intrinsically linked to identity and political power within societies, and how language policy and migration might become a firmer part of European policy agendas. Sitting at the intersection between policy studies, language education studies and integration studies, the book offers recommendations for how education policy can promote a more inclusive society. It will appeal to scholars, practitioners and students who have an interest in policymaking, education policy and migrant integration.

Book Seascape Ecology from characterization to evaluation of state and change over time

Download or read book Seascape Ecology from characterization to evaluation of state and change over time written by Monica Montefalcone and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape ecology has been a discrete, established discipline since at least 1980. Its marine counterpart, seascape ecology, is barely a decade old, its first applications dating from the early 2010s. Lack of perception of the marine environment hampers the adoption of many landscape ecology approaches to the sea. Seascape ecology relies on special technologies such as remote sensing (either acoustic or optical), robotics, and scuba diving. Both disciplines deal with the spatial configuration of ecosystems and consider environmental heterogeneity and dynamics as the main subjects of study and the key for ecosystem functioning and persistence. Seascape is here intended as the totality of natural and anthropogenic characters of a marine region. To the geologist, it is defined by sedimentology and underwater geomorphology, to the biologist by the nature of the living cover of the seafloor, to the ecologist by the relationships among functional processes and the spatial organization of ecosystems. The goal of this research topic is to encourage original research, case studies, reviews, and viewpoints to identify research priority gaps and possibly contribute to filling them in. We will appreciate, in particular, manuscripts dealing with recent advances such as high-resolution habitat mapping; underwater soundscape and biophony; development, application and validation of biotic indices to assess seafloor integrity (as requested, for instance, by recent European Directives). Papers of interest may discuss the multivarious facets of stability and describe resistance and resilience patterns, the role of stress and disturbance, regime shift and phase shift, or may take up the challenge of integrating coastal landscape and seascape analyses. Studies of long-term series are welcome, as well as methodological improvements, and macroecological approaches on the importance of species diversity and connectivity in seascape organization.

Book excerpt: Henie Onstad Kunstsenter has been groundbreaking for almost 50 years in presenting new and experimental art, and is a historical place for photography in Norway.Edited by MELK together with Susanne Østby Sæther (HOK) Why Photography? highlights and go into depth on the current generation of photographers and functions as a reference publication for the years to come. They ask artists to state, with words and images, how they see and relate to photography as a technical apparatus, and why they have chosen photography as well as the potential future of the medium. Rather than being a classic scholarly publication, the goal is to release a visual manifesto that outlines many and varied viewpoints from every corner of the globe. In 2017 Henie Onstad launched an ambitious photo program, which aims to increase the engagement with and knowledge of modern and contemporary photography as an art form. As part of the photo program, they develop a new and extensive exhibition format in the form of a triennial that will showcase recent developments in photography and camera based art more generally. The exhibition recurs every third year, bringing together recent work of around 35 international artists.Henie Onstad will be working with a new collaborative partner as co-curators for each edition. For the first edition they are collaborating with the artist-run Oslo-based gallery MELK (Behzad Farazollahi, Christian Tunge and Bjarne Bare), who have been pivotal for promoting new practices within Scandinavian photography nationally and internationally.
