Book excerpt: In this page-turning odyssey, a mother on a mission travels the globe — from Bedouin camps in the Middle East to Amish farms in Pennsylvania to camel-herder villages in India — to obtain camel milk, which dramatically helps her son’s autism symptoms. Chronicling bureaucratic roadblocks, adventure-filled detours, and Christina Adams’s love-fueled determination, Camel Crazy explores why camels are cherished as family members and hailed as healers. Adams’s work uncovers studies of camel milk for possible treatment of autism, allergies, diabetes, and immune dysfunction, as well as ancient traditions of healing. But the most fascinating aspect of Adams’s discoveries is the gentle-eyed, mischievous camels themselves. Huge and often unpredictable, they are amazingly intelligent and adaptable. This moving and rollicking ode to “camel people” and the creatures they adore reveals the ways camels touch lives around the world. Includes users’ and buyers’ guides to camel’s milk

Book Contemporary World Narrative Fiction and the Spaces of Neoliberalism

Download or read book Contemporary World Narrative Fiction and the Spaces of Neoliberalism written by Michael K. Walonen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a transnational study of how contemporary fiction writers from the United States and Canada to Nigeria to India to Dubai have conceptualized the emergent social spaces of the diverse corners of the neoliberal world system. Over the span of the past three to four decades, free market economic policies have been sold to or pushed upon every society on the globe in some way, shape, or form. The upshot of this has been a world system structured in terms of a vast shift of power and resources from government to private enterprise, dwindling civic life replaced by rising consumerism, an emerging oligarchic rentier class, large segments of population faced with meager material conditions of existence and few prospects of socio-economic mobility, and a looming sense of a near future dominated by further economic collapses and mounting social strife. This book analyses a wide cultural array of some of the most poignant narrative engagements with neoliberalism in its various localized manifestations throughout the world.

Book Straight from the Camels Mouth

Download or read book Straight from the Camels Mouth written by Suzanne Potter and published by . This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q: So why did I write this book? A: After moving from Australia to Dubai in 2007, I realised that life as we knew it was going to be very different. Weekly I would sit in front of my laptop emailing family and friends in England and Australia and keeping them up to date with what was happening. The emails were a way for me to off-load some of the frustrating and stressful situations we found ourselves in, and also share some of the funny, shocking and unbelievable happenings too. The first year passed by, the emails kept flowing, the recipients kept saying; "Hey this is great, you should write a book" "I live for the next installment" "You make my journey home on the train a better one, I just have to stop myself laughing out loud at times" People judged us, pressuming that tax free salaries, all year sunshine, maids, nannies and cleaners together with shopping malls to die for and hotels to take your breath away, meant that we should have no reason to be unhappy, and infact think ourselves lucky. What some failed to realise, is that choosing to better ourselves and provide for our children and their futures, we have sacrificed having our family and close friends being part of our day to day life, which is very important to both us and our children. Some people believed I 'could only' be making the stories up, and laughed! I had to remind them that despite being funny; this was actually our life and very real.

Book excerpt: This is Dubai: a place where the confines of the imagination no longer apply. Dubai has become the watchword for all things new, glittering and very bling - a billionaire's dream world and a haven for international expatriates promising a fantasy land of tax-free fun, sun and sin. In less than a generation, this small city-state on the Arabian Gulf has been transformed from a sleepy smuggler's cove to a global financial and entertainment hub home to a number of world records, including the world's tallest building, the largest man-made island and the biggest shopping mall. But what is life really like for the people who live and work in the city of Dubai, beyond the towering skyscrapers, luxury resorts and opulent mansions? Rather than just desert Sheikhs and designer-clad Emiratis, Raymond Barrett also encounters a dizzy melange of expatriates - Iranians, Ethiopians, Indians, Afghans, British and Chinese - all living their own version of The Dubai Dream. Behind the hyperbole and marketing spin, what are the real stories the city has to tell? From seven-star hotels to immigrant labour camps, from Sunni mosques to Hindu temples and from the courthouse to a back-alley speakeasy, Barrett draws a fascinating picture of the brave new world emerging from these desert sands. He reveals the hidden side of this playboy paradise and considers whether Dubai is a doomed Plastic Arabia or an authentic 21st century success story.
