Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camden on the Coast of Maine: And Its Advantages for Summer Homes Lying mid-way along the irregular coast of Maine, is the broad expanse of water known as Penobscot Bay. Hundreds of islands dot its vast area, while its shores are bounded by lofty hills terminating in mountain ranges. At the base of one of the most picturesque of these mountain groups lies the village of Camden, hemmed in by the mountains, and looking directly out to the ocean in one direction, and across the bay in another. Book excerpt: This travel journal is the sixth book in a series by Tom Marshall describing experiences he and his wife Elysee have had during their summer's away from home. Tom and Elysee practice and indorse a lifestyle captured in the phrase of another of Tom's books, MAKE THE WORLD YOUR SECOND HOME. Although residing in retirement in Naples, Florida for the past eleven years, Tom and Elysee have yet to spend a summer there. Instead they live in a different place each year, renting as an option to owning a second home.In the previous eleven years they have stayed in Ireland, Australia/New Zealand, Carmel, California, Slovenia, Annapolis, Md., Estonia, Boothbay Harbor, and Camden Maine. These have not been vacations, but residences of three or more months. In this book Tom provides a brief survey of Maine's history and the Camden region, describes the activities and events he encountered and participated in, several day trips he took to places of interest nearby, and excursions further afield of several days or more. The book is complimented with numerous photographs, mostly taken by Tom.Any reader contemplating a visit to Maine, and especially to the Camden Region would benefit from reading this book.

Book Glimpses of Camden on the Coast of Maine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glimpses of Camden on the Coast of Maine Classic Reprint written by John R. Prescott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Camden on the Coast of Maine The approach to Camden is striking and beautiful from every route leading to it, particularly from the sea. The village itself lies nestled among the mountains, yet close to the water's edge. It looks directly out to the ocean in one direction, and across the bay, thickly dotted with islands, in another. The mountains dominate everything. Their lofty summits are landmarks far out to sea, and those who are fortunate enough to make their first trip to Camden by water will find the unfolding of these mountains, as the steamer draws nearer and nearer to Camden, a never-to-be-forgotten delight. Their full outlines are first seen as the steamer passes Owl's Head in the early morning. The view from this point is shown on the opposite page. After leaving Rockland the steamer heads directly for Camden, eight miles distant, passing Jameson's Point on the left, with its long breakwater, and the imposing mass of the Samoset Hotel just back of it. This is situated in what was formerly a part of Camden. It has been the means of introducing so many people to Camden that any account of the latter place calls for approving mention of the Samoset. This magnificent house, the finest on the New England coast, was opened in 1902. It is modern in every known detail. Book Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine

Download or read book Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine written by Mac Smith and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a well-known fact, perhaps legend now, that Peyton Place, the controversial, scandalous blockbuster was filmed in Camden, Maine and the surrounding towns in 1957. But how did the movie come to be filmed in Maine, who was involved in getting it here, and what did the locals think about 20th Century Fox shooting a big-budget film in their front yards? Historian Mac Smith (Mainers on the Titanic) has done the research and conducted the interviews and presents a fascinating account of events and key players. Beginning with the arrival of film crews, he traces the making of the movie, what happened after the crews left, and the premiere of the film, which was held in Camden. Includes quotes from Maine residents who were extras in the film.
