Book Cambridge Sketches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cambridge Sketches Classic Reprint written by Frank Preston Stearns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Sketches IT has never been my practice to introduce myself to distinguished persons, or to attempt in any way to attract their attention, and I now regret that I did not embrace some Opportuni ties which occurred to me in early life for doing so; but at the time I knew the men whom I have described in the present volume I had no expectation that I should ever write about them. My acquaintance with them, however, has served to give me a more elevated idea of human nature than I otherwise might have acquired in the ordinary course of mundane affairs, and it is with the hope of transmitting this impression to my readers that I publish the present account. Some of them have a world-wide celebrity, and others who were distinguished in their own time seem likely now to be forgotten; but they all deserve well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Staircase The English is loose in places: I hope, however, that the sense is. Clear enough to convey what is intended, and that is more than can always, I think, be said of some even of the anti-posthumous works Of the present day; and there are one or two Cambridge expressions which are fallacious: these last are purely printer's errors, and the assistance Of a Cambridge man, if he is anywhere about, must be called in to set them right. There are, too, passages in the book which I should have preferred to have altered altogether, for reasons which my more intimate friends will understand, and which have arisen since the sketches were originally written these must be read by those friends with mercy, and they must not judge me by them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the Cities of Boston and Cambridge Leverett, Ruling Elder of the church, who had been an alderman. Some graceful courtesies have been exchanged in recent years between the two cities. The English Boston sent over a copy of her charter, framed in wood from St. Botolph's Church, and this now hangs in the city hall of the Massachusetts capital; and some descendants of John Cotton, with members of his American church, through one of their number, Edward Ev erett then American Minister near the Court of St. James, united in a generous subscription to restore a chapel in St. Botolph's, and to erect a monumental tablet in it to the revered teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Revisited These chapters, with two exceptions, were originally con tributed to the Cambridge Chronicle (several appearing concurrently in the Cambridge Daily News). The friendly criticism, encourage ment and offers of information which their appearance called forth came as an agreeable surprise to me, and, in consequence, I have been tempted to present them again to the public, after revision and with many additions, in a more permanent form. But for the constant encouragement of Mr Ambrose Harding, who has advised and helped me with the book in all its stages, and whose support I cannot hope adequately to acknowledge, this little volume would never have been written. To Mr A. T. Bartholomew I am also much indebted for reading these pages in manuscript and giving me valued direction. Mr A. H. Cook has added to the usefulness of the book by providing a good index, and has been indefatigable in clearing up difficult points of information. Book Cambridge Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cambridge Papers Classic Reprint written by W. W. Rouse Ball and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Papers This volume contains papers on some questions of local history put together, mostly for undergraduate societies and magazines, at various times during the last twenty-five years. I have included a memoir, written for a London Society, on Newton's Principia, a work that profoundly affected the development of University studies in the eighteenth century, and a chapter on the History of the Mathematical Tripos, which at one time appeared in my Mathematical Recreations and Essays, since these are concerned with Cambridge subjects. I print the papers, whether long or short, and whether read at length or, as was more often the case, curtailed in delivery, substantially in the form in which they were first written. This leaves allusions which bear evidence to their domestic origin, and involves, in those of them dealing with cognate subjects, some repetition of facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fine Art: A Sketch of Its History, Theory, Practice, and Application to Industry; Being a Course of Lectures Delivered at Cambridge in 1870 It would be absurd to deny that the English, as a body of artists, do not at this present time stand respectably before the world; but it is rather to that vital energy to which I have alluded, than to any systematic cultivation of their abilities, that they stand indebted for the honour able position they may be held to occupy. There is, however, left to us the happy reflection that if, with the interjectional and interrupted studies hitherto pursued by English artists, they have attained the position they now occupy as compared with their continental rivals, how much may we not hope will be effected by their talents. Its purpose is to Show the conditions of medieval England Which shaped the University in its beginnings, and the intellectual needs which, in successive centuries, it was the aim of its benefactors and the founders of its colleges to satisfy. In the chapters which deal with post-reforma tion times I have made no continuous survey of the life and studies of the University, but have aimed at showing its character at certain epochs in its history, and its influences on some of its most eminent sons who have carried those influences into national Spheres of science or letters. Incidentally I have endeavoured to present a picture of men and manners at Cambridge at the time when it was known to each of these great men, and of scenes in college courts and. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
