Book Preaching During the English Reformation

Download or read book Preaching During the English Reformation written by Susan Wabuda and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the religious culture of sixteenth-century England, centred around preaching, and is concerned with competing forms of evangelism between humanists of the Roman Catholic Church and emerging forms of Protestantism. More than any other authority, Erasmus refashioned the ideal of the preacher. Protestant reformers adopted 'preaching Christ' as their strategy to promote the doctrine of justification by faith. The apostolic traditions of the preaching chantries provided standards that evangelical reformers used to supplant the mendicant friars in England. The late medieval cult of the Holy Name of Jesus is explored: the pervasive iconography of its symbol 'IHS' became one of the attributes of moderate Protestant belief. The book also offers fresh perspectives on fifteenth- and sixteenth-century figures on every side of the doctrinal divide, including John Rotheram, John Colet, Hugh Latimer and Anne Boleyn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge and Other Sermons These twenty-four sermons are arranged in a series corresponding to the Church's year; they are not however of one uniform character. Most of them were preached more than once, generally with considerable alteration and adaptation: nearly all are here printed in their ultimate form. Though all are alike in simplicity of language, those written for a village congregation naturally present more elementary aspects of faith and service than those intended for a college chapel or the University church. Since they range over a period of over thirty years, it might be said that those of earlier date do not perhaps represent the author's maturest thought; but the frequent revision which most of them underwent makes it probable that little, if anything, is here printed which he would have disowned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1898, this collection of sermons by the Irish-born Cambridge biblical scholar and theologian F. J. A. Hort distils over thirty years' work as a pastor. Compiled by the author's son six years after Hort's death, this book contains twenty-four sermons, organised to correspond with the Church calendar. Written for school children, Cambridge college chapels, and the congregation of Hort's own parish in Hertfordshire, many of the sermons in this collection were delivered on more than one occasion and have consequently been revised many times. As Hort's son points out, they appear here in their 'ultimate form', perfected over three decades. First preached over a century ago, Hort's lucid prose makes his work easily accessible. Written in deceptively simple language, the care and precision found in Hort's better-known academic work are also evident in his sermons, which are articulated with grace and clarity.

Book Twelve Cambridge Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twelve Cambridge Sermons Classic Reprint written by John E. B. Mayor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1998 study describes the most neglected site of political, religious and literary culture in early modern England: the court pulpits of Elizabeth I and James I. It unites the most fertile strains in early modern British history - the court and religion. Dr McCullough shows work previous to his own underestimated the place of religion in courtly culture, and presents evidence of the competing religious patronage not only of Elizabeth and James but also of Queen Anne, Prince Henry and Prince Charles. The book contextualises the political, religious and literary careers of court preachers such as Lancelot Andrewes, John Donne and William Laud, and presents evidence of the tensions between sermon- and sacrament-centred piety in the established Church period. Additional web resources provide the reader with a definitive calendar of court sermons for the period.
