Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Geographical Readers This book was written in accordance with the Board of Education's Circular (834) on the Teaching of Geography, but, as it deals with most of the countries which have been so radically affected by the War, its publication was delayed until the Peace settlement. It will be noted that the earlier chapters on the Principles of Geography have special reference to Europe; and that the last chapter on "The New Europe" gives a comprehensive review of the changes which the War has brought about. Book Carpenter s Geographical Reader

Download or read book Carpenter s Geographical Reader written by Frank George Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carpenter's Geographical Reader: Europe This book aims to give the children a plain and simple de scription of the countries of Europe as they are to-day. The method is by taking the little ones on a personally conducted tour over the continent. It is the children themselves who cross the Atlantic Ocean, steam over the Baltic and the Mediterranean seas and down the historic Rhine and the Danube. It is they who Climb the Alps and stand on the North Cape watching the sun shine at midnight. It is they who go from city to city, from farm to farm, and factory to factory, seeing how the various peoples live and what they are doing in the work Of the world. It is they who are admitted to the palaces, parliaments, and public offices where they learn how each nation is governed and something as to its civilization, commerce, and trade. It is not intended that these travels should take the place of the school geographies, but that they should be used with such books as supplementary reading. As in the volumes describing similar tours in North America, South America, and Asia, the text-books on geography may be regarded as the skeleton and this reader as the flesh and blood which will clothe the dry bones and make the countries a living whole in the minds of the pupils. A glance at the table of contents will give some idea of the scope and character of the work. The children, having crossed the Atlantic on one of the big ocean greyhounds, begin their tour in the United Kingdom. Landing at Queenstown, they explore Ireland, visiting Cork, Killarney, Limerick, and Galway. They cross the bog lands and plains to Dublin, and thence go to the Giant's Causeway and Belfast, where they learn how linen is made. From Belfast, they sail to Glasgow, and after spending a while in the Lowlands or Industrial Scotland go to Edinburgh by the Trossachs. They make a hunting trip to the Highlands, and visit the homes of Robert Burns and Walter Scott before crossing the border to England. It is believed that every sentence and picture in this book has a human interest, viewed from a child's standpoint. Download or read book The Picturesque Geographical Readers Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles F. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Picturesque Geographical Readers, Vol. 2 A thorough knowledge of one's country is a prime condition of intelligent citizenship. This knowledge should first come to one in school, under intelligent instruction and carefully arranged facts. Children are always interested in all that concerns the land they live in, and find greater delight when the matter is properly presented, in learning about its natural beauties, its productions, cities, people, than in studying about other countries. It has been the aim of the author of these Readers to collate and present in as attractive a manner as possible the striking facts of the United States. The amount and number of interesting facts collected made it necessary to issue these in three volumes convenient to handle and satisfactorily complete in information. Book III. Part I. takes up the New England and Middle States; Book IV. Part II. mainly describes the Southern, Middle, and Central States. Book V. Part III. describes the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Coast. The present volume is designed for children in the fifth and sixth years of school life, but it is well adapted for more advanced grades. Download or read book The Story of the Earth and Its Peoples written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth and Its Peoples: A Geography Reader for Pupils in Form III, of the Public Schools But we must have a definite picture of this planet of ours to take back with us and show our friends. So we get our camera ready, and since it is only a kind of moonlight that is coming to us from the earth, we must give our plate a long exposure. Just to make sure of having a good picture, we develop the first plate while we expose a second. In due time the picture appears; but surely there is some thing wrong with the plate! The edge oi the earth's disc is quite sharp and distinct, but all the markings which were so clear to the eye have come out as mere blurred streaks on the photograph. When our second plate is developed, we find precisely the same kind of streaky marks as before! The cause of this blurring soon becomes evident - the earth has not kept still during the time we had our plate exposed. If we watch the earth itself for a while, we see that it is still moving. All the patches of colour are farther to the right than they were a little while ago. We set ourselves to watch the markings on the earth's disc, and soon we find that any prominent patch of colour which we select travels from one side of the circle to the other in twelve hours. That is just what we might have expected. The earth is, of course, spinning round continually, making a complete turn every twenty-four hours. Whenever any part of it comes round to the side next us, on which the sun is shining, that part passes through the sunrise line into full day. It swings round towards the other side of the shining disc, and passes through the sunset line back into twilight and night.
