Book The Invention of the Biblical Scholar

Download or read book The Invention of the Biblical Scholar written by Stephen D. Moore and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this "tale of two disciplines," Stephen D. Moore and Yvonne Sherwood invite the reader into a paradox: just as the wider field of literary studies has now come to operate "after theory," biblical scholars continue their long search for an elusive Holy Grail?a definitive literary-critical theory. Understanding that paradox requires revisiting the peculiar history by which the curious figure of the biblical scholar was invented during the Enlightenment, and how contemporary biblical scholarship continues?however unwittingly?to pursue Enlightenment goals.

Book Anglican Evangelicalism in Sydney 1897 to 1953

Download or read book Anglican Evangelicalism in Sydney 1897 to 1953 written by John A. McIntosh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John McIntosh attempts to describe more accurately and completely the spectrum of Evangelicalism (Anglican) that three successive principals of Moore Theological College appropriated and taught in the period. Each was an outstanding graduate of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin, respectively. The study traces the circumstances of their appointment and seeks to define the convictions they held—against the background of challenges and changes to their Christian faith they faced in their day. A close examination of their published and unpublished literary oeuvre clears away misunderstandings and even misrepresentations of their thought and influence. In so doing it explains how it was that those Evangelicals in the diocese who adhered more closely to their Reformation tradition finally prevailed decisively over those who were Protestant but liberal.

Book Nation and Word 1770 1850

Download or read book Nation and Word 1770 1850 written by Mary Anne Perkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the modern nation state in Europe and the accompanying rise in national consciousness led to a heightened awareness of the close relationship between language and national identity. In this book the author shows that this relationship was expressed through the themes and figures of a ’language’ of nationhood, drawn from a common European cultural heritage, particularly the Classical and Christian traditions. Despite its common roots, this language became the medium through which the diversity of national characters was expressed. The idea of the divine Word, for example, enabled the sacredness and power of national language to be celebrated. The identification of poet and prophet gave Romantic nationalists an authority to speak for and to the nation, and the theme of the Chosen People was often adopted to express the elect status of a writer’s own nation. In conclusion, it is shown that this language of nationhood remains a powerful force at the end of the twentieth century.

Book The Enlightenment and the Intellectual Foundations of Modern Culture

Download or read book The Enlightenment and the Intellectual Foundations of Modern Culture written by Louis Dupre and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prestige of the Enlightenment has declined in recent years. Many consider its thinking abstract, its art and poetry uninspiring, and the assertion that it introduced a new age of freedom and progress after centuries of darkness and superstition presumptuous. In this book, an eminent scholar of modern culture shows that the Enlightenment was a more complex phenomenon than most of its detractors and advocates assume. It includes rationalist as well as antirationalist tendencies, a critique of traditional morality and religion as well as an attempt to establish them on new foundations, even the beginning of a moral renewal and a spiritual revival. The Enlightenment’s critique of tradition was a necessary consequence of the fundamental modern principle that we humans are solely responsible for the course of history. Hence we can accept no belief, no authority, no institutions that are not in some way justified. This foundation, for better or for worse, determined the course of the following centuries. Despite contemporary reactions against it, the Enlightenment continues to shape our own time and still distinguishes Western culture from any other.
