Book Gargilius Martialis The Agricultural Fragments

Download or read book Gargilius Martialis The Agricultural Fragments written by James L. Zainaldin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third century CE, the North African polymath, soldier, and provincial official Q. Gargilius Martialis (died 260) wrote a treatise on the cultivation and medical use of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The agricultural part of this work survives in a fragmentary state in a single manuscript. Despite this impediment, the agricultural writings are noteworthy for the clear marks both of their meticulous research and of the application of independent judgement and experience. Gargilius furthermore presents his advice in a stylized and literary form that strives for elegance through the use of prose rhythm, rhetorical variatio, and figurative language. The fragments will be valuable for those interested in ancient agriculture, in Greco-Roman authorship on the technai or artes, and in the history and sociolinguistics of Latin. This volume offers a new edition and the first English translation of Gargilius' agricultural fragments as well as an introduction and full-scale commentary.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Costas Panayotakis
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2010-02-11
  • ISBN : 1139485458
  • Pages : 543 pages

Download or read book Decimus Laberius written by Costas Panayotakis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a newly revised, critical text of the fragments attributed to the Roman knight and mimographer Decimus Laberius, a witty and crudely satirical contemporary of Cicero and Caesar. Laberius is perhaps the most celebrated comic playwright of the late Republic, and the fragments of plays attributed to him comprise the overwhelming majority of the extant evidence for what we conventionally call 'the literary Roman mime'. The volume also includes a survey of the characteristics and development of the Roman mime, both as a literary genre and as a type of popular theatrical entertainment, as well as a re-evaluation of the place of Laberius' work within its historical and literary context. This is the first English translation of all the fragments, and the first detailed English commentary on them from a linguistic, metrical, and (wherever possible) theatrical perspective.

Book Sovereignty in Fragments

Download or read book Sovereignty in Fragments written by Hent Kalmo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political make-up of the contemporary world changes with such rapidity that few attempts have been made to consider with adequate care, the nature and value of the concept of sovereignty. What exactly is meant when one speaks about the acquisition, preservation, infringement or loss of sovereignty? This book revisits the assumptions underlying the applications of this fundamental category, as well as studying the political discourses in which it has been embedded. Bringing together historians, constitutional lawyers, political philosophers and experts in international relations, Sovereignty in Fragments seeks to dispel the illusion that there is a unitary concept of sovereignty of which one could offer a clear definition. This book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of international relations, international law and the history of political thought.

Download or read book Fragments of Tragedy in Postmodern Film written by Sezen Kayhan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the theories about the “death of tragedy”, this book explores fragments and reflections of tragedy in postmodern film. Tragedy has changed and evolved with human society, and its continuous chain from Ancient Greece to modern times has been broken by postmodernism. However, certain aspects of tragedy have continued to be used by literature and film: in particular, films with themes of chaos, violence, popular culture, paranoia, virtual reality and alienation often use aspects of tragedy. The focus of this study is on these facets adopted by postmodern film.

Book Diversity and Rabbinization

Download or read book Diversity and Rabbinization written by Gavin McDowell and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Hebrew and Syriac text. Please, check that your e-reader supports texts set in left-to-right direction before purchasing the epub and azw3 editions of the book. This volume is dedicated to the cultural and religious diversity in Jewish communities from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Age and the growing influence of the rabbis within these communities during the same period. Drawing on available textual and material evidence, the fourteen essays presented here, written by leading experts in their fields, span a significant chronological and geographical range and cover material that has not yet received sufficient attention in scholarship. The volume is divided into four parts. The first focuses on the vantage point of the synagogue; the second and third on non-rabbinic Judaism in, respectively, the Near East and Europe; the final part turns from diversity within Judaism to the process of "rabbinization" as represented in some unusual rabbinic texts. Diversity and Rabbinization is a welcome contribution to the historical study of Judaism in all its complexity. It presents fresh perspectives on critical questions and allows us to rethink the tension between multiplicity and unity in Judaism during the first millennium CE. L’École Pratique des Hautes Études has kindly contributed to the publication of this volume.
