Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second and final volume of a collection of studies on the role of the state in capital accumulation in Latin America. Volume One included a general historical and conceptual introduction and case studies of Brazil, Chile and Mexico. The present volume covers the remaining countries of South America (with the exception of Paraguay). Together, the ten countries examined in the two volumes represent 89% of the Latin American population and 94% of the continent's GDP.

Download or read book The Management of Ocean and Coastal Resources in Colombia written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of an 18-month study of coastal and marine resources development in Colombia. The study was a result of a request by the Direccion General Maritima y Portuaria (DIMAR) of the Colombian Navy to the Marine Policy and Ocean Management Center of WHOI and was carried out jointly with that group. Observations of the present situation and potential for four sectors are presented--fisheries and aquaculture, marine minerals and energy, marine transportation and ports, and tourism and coastal development. The coastal tourism and fisheries sectors appear to be the most promising in terms of near-term potential. Suggestions for achieving increased economic and social benefits from these sectors are provided. In addition, institutional arrangements among the ocean-related agencies in Colombia are reviewed and recommendations aimed at achieving a higher degree of policy integration are offered.

Download or read book Initial Settlement of Marine Invertebrate Larvae written by Cheryl Ann Hannan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 1278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis that planktonic larvae of benthic invertebrates sink through the water like passive particles in turbulent flows near the seabed was tested in the field using several groups of geometrically different sediment trap designs. A priori predictions regarding the rank order that the various traps would collect larvae in the field were dictated from laboratory flume experiments to determine the relative particle collection efficiencies of the traps. The flume flow was seeded with particles having fall velocities similar to those measured, in the laboratory, for nonswimming polychaete larvae. The flume flow speed (of about 10 cm/sec) was within the range of near-bottom current velocities measured during trap collection intervals at the field study site. The passive sinking hypothesis could not be falsified for collections of organisms from three invertebrate phyla (polychaetes, bivalves, and enteropneusts) in seven field experiments. Thus, hydrodynamical processes must be included in any future studies of mechanisms that determine patterns of larval settlement. Other processes that could have produced the results now must be tested against the passive sinking alternative hypothesis. If larvae sink like passive particles in near-bottom flows, as the results of this study suggest, then larvae may initially reach the seafloor at sites where particulates, with fall velocities similar to larvae, initially settle.
