Book A Life of Alexander Campbell

Download or read book A Life of Alexander Campbell written by Douglas A. Foster and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical biography of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Stone-Campbell Movement A Life of Alexander Campbell examines the core identity of a gifted and determined reformer to whom millions of Christians around the globe today owe much of their identity—whether they know it or not. Douglas Foster assesses principal parts of Campbell’s life and thought to discover his significance for American Christianity and the worldwide movement that emerged from his work. He examines Campbell’s formation in Ireland, his creation and execution of a reform of Christianity beginning in America, and his despair at the destruction of his vision by the American Civil War. A Life of Alexander Campbell shows why this important but sometimes misunderstood and neglected figure belongs at the heart of the American religious story.

Mr. Alexander Campbell, of Bethany, Virginia, and the party embracing his views, have assumed several appellations. They have styled themselves Reformers, Christians, and Dis ciples. Without discussing their exclusive claim to these titles, it is clear that from neither of them can any term be derived which will fairly distinguish their system of doctrine. The word Reformation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baptist Story is a story of struggle and triumph, victory and heartbreak. There have always existed, although sometimes in the most remote regions, those who sought to maintain pure New Testament practice in the face of all adversity. These believers were a simple people who led a simple life, and who sought to adhere to the simple, primitive practices of the New Testament. For their adherence to the simple truths of God’s precious Word, these Godly saints suffered banishment, imprisonment, persecution, some even suffering death by fire and sword. Their persecutions were sanctioned by the pagan religious establishments of that day. But these saints endured because “they loved not their lives unto the death.” They counted the truth of God’s Word more precious than family, friends, and their very lives. This excellent work, which is a series of sermons based upon The Trail of Blood by the revered J. M. Carroll, presents in a simple, enlightening, and easy to read fashion, the story of these precious souls who lived pure lives and died for the simple truths which are often taken advantage of today. Baptists of today need to become more aware of the struggles borne by their forefathers and the premium price paid for the maintenance of New Testament truth. Just as we owe the military soldiers a debt for the sacrifices they have made for the cause of personal freedom, so we owe an even greater debt to the soldiers of the cross who suffered and gave their lives to secure our religious freedom, which is taken for granted today. We present this book with the hope that it will be used to make God’s people aware of their glorious past. We pray that the all-wise God will see fit to use this work to once again enlighten His people and to give them the courage to stand for the truths contained in His precious Word.

  • Author : Richard Thomas Hughes
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing

Download or read book Reviving the Ancient Faith written by Richard Thomas Hughes and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking book by Richard T. Hughes chronicles the history of Churches of Christ in America from their inception in the early nineteenth century to the 1990s, taking full account of the complexity of their origins, the mainstream of their heritage for almost two hundred years, and their voices of protest and dissent, especially in the twentieth century. From The Critics "Hughes...here provides the definitive history of the Churches of Christ from their beginnings in the Stone-Campbell movement of the early 19th century through the split with the Disciples of Christ at the turn of the century and all the way into the 1990s. Central to this richly detailed and highly readable narrative is Hughes's assertion that this religious movement has evolved from a 19th-century sect into a 20th-century denomination." - Choice "Because of Hughes's elegant writing and his awareness of the social history surrounding the developing denomination, this study transcends mere denominational history and should be read as cultural history. It should remain the standard volume on the subject for years to come." - Publishers Weekly "Hughes provides a clear, balanced account of an American religious movement that has heretofore received insufficient scholarly attention." - Journal of American History "An excellent denominational history of Churches of Christ.... Richard T. Hughes, who admirably balances an empathy born of his lifelong membership in the denomination with the standards of a professional historian, labored on this book for a decade and a half, and the result is a study both thoroughly researched and clearly written." - American Historical Review "Hughes is the foremost interpreter today ofthe Churches of Christ, as this book illustrates.... Well written and meticulously documented, this book could serve as the definitive history of this movement for a generation." - Religious Studies Review

Book The Life of Selina Campbell

Download or read book The Life of Selina Campbell written by Loretta Marie Long and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2013-09-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first biography of Selina Campbell opens a window onto the experience of women in one of the most dynamic religious groups of 19th-century America Loretta M. Long examines the life and influence of Selina Campbell, one of the most visible women in the 19th-century Disciples of Christ movement. Best known as the wife of Alexander Campbell, founder of the Disciples, Selina Campbell both shaped and exemplified the role of women in this dynamic religious group (also known as the Stone-Campbell movement). Her story demonstrates the importance of faith in the lives of many women during this era and adds a new dimension to the concept of the “separate spheres” of men and women, which women like Campbell interpreted in the context of their religious beliefs. A household manager, mother, writer, and friend, Campbell held sway primarily in the domestic sphere, but she was not held captive by it. Her relationship with her husband was founded on a deep sense of partnership conditioned by their strong faith in an all-powerful God. Each of them took on complementary roles according to the perceived natural abilities of their genders: Alexander depended on Selina to manage his property and raise the children while he traveled the country preaching. Campbell outlived her husband by 30 years, and during that time published several newspaper articles and supported new causes, such as women in missions. In the end, as Long amply demonstrates, Selina Campbell was neither her husband’s shadow nor solely a domestic worker. She was, in her husband’s eyes, a full partner and a “fellow soldier” in the cause of Restoration.
