Book excerpt: In Upstate New York, an alien presence approaches a sleepy little farm. The Jones family has never faced a more challenging fate. Their will and hearts are about to be tested. The unforeseen is now becoming a menace. The common crayfish is seen as fishing bait, but today the meek will inherit the farm. An asteroid has come to change all of the farm's inhabitants' futures. The asteroid carries a mutagen that creates the worst incident to hit Worcester, New York, in the past one hundred years. This small hamlet has a police force, and they are about to be overwhelmed. The monster invading is an air-breathing crustacean. The mutagen gives these creatures a massive boost in evolutionary growth in only a few days. The quiet hillside is the perfect spot for a crayfish to thrive. The farmers are no match for a mutated crayfish. Their sheer size makes their exoskeleton practically bulletproof. The forces of nature will face the brutality of man. Only the fates know how this conflict will turn out. Metal vs. chitin-this will be one strange tale to tell your friends.

Book Recent Advances in Freshwater Crustacean Biodiversity and Conservation

Download or read book Recent Advances in Freshwater Crustacean Biodiversity and Conservation written by Tadashi Kawai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-07 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Freshwater Crustacean Biodiversity and Conservation focuses on minor crustacean groups and regionally endemic groups, all from freshwaters. Chapters in this book cover crustaceans such as Maxillopods, Mysids, Cumaceans, Isopods, Amphipods, Branchiopods, Copepods, and Decapods. Each looks at global or regional fauna and discusses conservation issues for that group. The majority of the chapters are based on papers presented at symposia organized by the editors at two international scientific meetings held in Barcelona and Washington DC. The contributors are world-renowned experts on their groups, as well as on freshwater crustacean conservation and biodiversity at global levels. It has previously been difficult for conservation managers, NGOs, and university professors and students who may not have access to comprehensive journal subscriptions to find relevant information on diversity and conservation of freshwater crustaceans. This book meets that need, addressing crustacean groups not previously treated and providing additional information beyond any presented in existing books. As the editors write in their introduction: we cannot conserve and we cannot protect what we do not know exists. This is a reliable, cutting-edge reference for anybody involved in crustacean research: students, researchers, agencies, and NGOs, as well as science educators, conservationists, and government conservation policymakers. The book will also be useful for those working in aquaculture and fisheries, given that many of the taxa discussed are economically important.

Book excerpt: For their great commercial importance as a human food delicacy, crayfish are now becoming of wider interest to molecular biologists, and also to conservationists due to the fact that in some countries many of the native crayfish species are under threat from human activity, disease, and competition from other introduced crayfish species. Book Crayfishes of Alabama

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guenter A. Schuster
  • Publisher : University of Alabama Press
  • Release : 2022-04-19
  • ISBN : 0817321063
  • Pages : 519 pages

Download or read book Crayfishes of Alabama written by Guenter A. Schuster and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book represents the most in-depth treatment of crayfishes for the state of Alabama to date. Alabama is currently known to host 99 species of crayfishes. The findings in this book are based on more than 9,000 records gathered from across the entire state. The authors collected specimens and data from all of Alabama's major and minor waterways and lakes, as well as specialized habitats such as burrows, roadside ditches, marshes, swamps, and temporary autumnal ponds. They visited all the major museums with holdings of crayfish specimens from Alabama, yielding a list of historical records including 4,259 specimen lots from approximately 2,200 unique locations. These records were used to build a database containing all available specimen metadata, including, but not limited to: species identification, number of individuals collected, location, date of collection, names of collectors, who identified the specimens, and the museum in which they are stored. Field work was conducted over a 14-year period during which a total of 4,487 specimen lots were collected and added to the database from approximately 2,600 unique locations sampled across Alabama. Prior to this book, no single comprehensive book or reference has ever been published on the crayfishes of Alabama. This book compiles 166 years of crayfish distributional and biological data for the 99 known Alabama species. It begins with chapters on the physiography and waterways of Alabama. One chapter discusses the general distributional patterns and habitat associations of Alabama crayfishes. Subsequent chapters discuss crayfish biology, ecology, conservation, and anatomy. Detailed species accounts include descriptions of morphological characters, life color, maximum size, comparative species, distribution and habitat, biology, crayfish associates, and conservation status. Color photographs, morphological plates, and dot maps showing distributions are included for each species; for many species, multiple color photos demonstrate the known color variations within each species. An illustrated key is provided to guide the identification of all 99 species. As the most up-to-date and comprehensive source of information on Alabama crayfishes to date, "Crayfishes of Alabama" provides a new perspective on Alabama's unique place as a biodiversity hotspot. It will be of lasting value to aquatic biologists and ecologists throughout the Southeast and crayfish biologists around the world, as well as of interest to natural resource managers, aquaculture farmers, and naturalists"--

Each chapter surveys pertinent literature and data, accesses conditions, identifies research needs, and examines the implications for southern forests and the benefits they provide.

Book A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans

Download or read book A Global Overview of the Conservation of Freshwater Decapod Crustaceans written by Tadashi Kawai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces updated information on conservation issues, providing an overview of what is needed to advance the global conservation of freshwater decapods such as freshwater crabs, crayfish, and shrimps. Biodiversity loss in general is highest in organisms that depend on intact freshwater habitats, because freshwater ecosystems worldwide are suffering intense threats from multiple sources. Our understanding of the number and location of threatened species of decapods, and of the nature of their extinction threats has improved greatly in recent years, and has enabled the development of species conservation strategies. This volume focuses on saving threatened species from extinction, and emphasizes the importance of the successful implementation of conservation action plans through cooperation between scientists, conservationists, educators, funding agencies, policy makers, and conservation agencies.
