Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We did not know; nobody has ever told us that!’ These were the words, spoken in tears, of Pope Pius XII on first reading passages from A Doctor at Calvary, Dr. Pierre Barbet’s scientific and reverent study of the Crucifixion of Christ. From an examination of the Holy Shroud of Turin—the authenticity of which Dr. Barbet accepts from medical evidence—a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s terrible agony is presented in language that cannot fail to move the heart. What kind and what degree of physical torture did Our Lord suffer on Calvary? What was the medical cause of His death? These are among the questions answered in A Doctor at Calvary, one of the most significant contributions to Christological science in modern times. Christ’s preliminary sufferings—the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging, the carrying of the cross—the wounds of the hands, in the feet, in the heart, the causes of the rapid death, and the entombment are recounted with the devotion and compassion of an ardent Christian and with a brilliant doctor’s accuracy of anatomical detail. ‘Without doubt this is one of the most gripping and moving books to have been published in many a year.’—Harold C. Gardiner, S. J. ‘As an aid to vivid viewing of the Passion, this book is peerless.’—Rev. John S. Kennedy, Balancing the Books ‘...a profoundly moving study of the Passion.’—Commonwealth ‘...a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s agony and death.’—Jubilee ‘This volume is an outstanding example of how science can contribute not only to theology, but to solid Christian piety, and thus be an aid to love of Christ.’—The Voice ‘This is a gripping and powerful book of the highest stature.’—Voice of St. Jude ‘Sincere study of this book will enable us for the first time to understand what is behind the words: ‘Jesus suffered and died for us.”—America

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of the lead pilot of the Pearl Harbor attack and his conversion to Christianity. “As I looked across at my companion, I marveled afresh at the goodness of God-this man was my enemy; now he is my brother! Such is the miracle of the grace of God.”—Rev. Elmer Sachs, Director of Sky Pilots International. These words were written of Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the first wave of the air attacks on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 as a Captain in the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. After the war, Fuchida was introduced to the gospel through the testimony of Jacob DeShazer. He began reading the Bible and eleven years after Pearl Harbor, he became a Christian. Fuchida spoke boldly of his conversion in his native Japan, and a few years later, he was recruited by Rev. Elmer Sachs to join Sky Pilots International. He came to the United States where he had the opportunity to share his story across the country. From Pearl Harbor to Calvary is the story of Mitsuo Fuchida’s conversion and ministry in his own words. Central to his narrative is the message that God works through even the most improbable of circumstances to further the gospel.

Download or read book Don t Stay at Calvary written by Pastor Ronald A. Palmer and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I finished writing my fist book, which was my autobiography, With God As My Partner, and had submitted it to the publishers for printing, I thought I was done for a while. About two months after that, I was almost asleep one night when the thought came to me: Don't Stay at Calvary. I was instantly awake and lay there for about a half hour trying to figure out what it meant. Getting nowhere, I committed it to the Lord and went to sleep. A couple days later, as I was praying, the verse in Matthew 16:24 came to mind where Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." It connected with the thought I had about Don't Stay at Calvary. This book is the result of those thoughts and the meditation that I spent on them. I had no thought of writing another book so soon, but I felt impressed to try to address the question I had been asked so often. "Why is the church of today so different from the church of the first century?" I certainly have no "corner on the market" of knowledge or wisdom, especially when it concerns such a profound and involved question as that one. I do, however, have over fifty years in the ministry of the Gospel, having answered the call to preach on the last Sunday of April 1969 and felt it may be beneficial to share what I believe God has laid on my heart about that subject. It is by no means the "final word," but I hope it will be a clear challenge for the church to follow Jesus in service rather than "stay at Calvary" in complacency.
Download or read book The Pattern of Calvary written by Jack Cochran and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is descending into darkness, and it's taking modern religion with it. And this nightmare is not an isolated incident reserved for just one branch of religion or one particular faith. No, this phenomenon, this falling away, has infected both large and small. It is a tangible collapse of faith that has begun to spread everywhere. It's like a religious pandemic has crept into the farthest reaches of the body and infected every organ with its symptoms of doubt and disbelief, killing off the weak and making sick the once proud faithful. We cannot escape the fact that a religious nightmare has descended upon the world we live in, and there doesn't seem to be a way out. Or is there? The Pattern of Calvary explores the forgotten truths of the Bible and the many reasons why we are in the religious shape we are in. It asks the hard questions about our existence and relationship with the Creator, ultimately presenting a simple solution to a complex religious problem of truth and getting us back on course with our Creator. "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill."
Download or read book From Calvary to Gambrini written by Matti Helelä and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story of my journey from Calvary to Gambrini, as I remember it from the 1970s and 1980s. Because I was bullied at school and I often felt very lonely, I needed an imaginary friend. At the age of fifteen, I publicly confessed my faith. I had found the suffering and bleeding Christ crucified on the hill of Calvary. He loved me and managed to save me from my loneliness. I made new dear friends, and life was more exciting. Faith guided my choices in life. From Calvary, I traveled a long way to Gay Gambrini. I opened its door at the age of 31. For sixteen years, I had denied myself and carried my cross. Now, being myself, I started a new life. I found a new kind of love, and many of my friends changed. What should I think about religion now? From the reader: "Vivid text and relentless humor. A ruthlessly honest investigation on searching and finding oneself. Never bitter, but, even when criticizing, with a gentle twinkle in the eye. An in-depth and touching journey of life. Thank you for the honor of having been able to take part in your journey and now being included in this story."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A professor and a graduate student search for a campus killer in this Golden Age mystery from the author of Nine Times Nine and “a fine craftsman” (Ellery Queen). Anthony Boucher was a literary renaissance man: an Edgar Award–winning mystery reviewer, an esteemed editor of the Hugo Award–winning Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, a prolific scriptwriter of radio mystery programs, and an accomplished writer of mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. With a particular fondness for the locked room mystery, Boucher created such iconic sleuths as Los Angeles PI Fergus O’Breen, amateur sleuth Sister Ursula, and alcoholic ex-cop Nick Noble. On the quiet Berkeley campus, a visiting professor has been murdered. Someone stabbed Dr. Hugo Schaedel through the heart with an ice pick, and the only clue found on the scene is a strange symbol scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper. Research fellow Martin Lamb is intrigued by the case and mentions it to his Sanskrit professor, John Ashwin. Together they hope to deduce who did the deed, but with no clear motive, it won’t be easy. They’ll need to quickly comb the campus for clues and hit the books—before the killer hits again . . .
