Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road to recovery in Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome is full of uncertainty and passive, stressful waiting. Breaking news in GBS-related research is presented along with scientific evidence for and against the effectiveness of conventional treatments. Natural ways to fight GBS with anti-inflammatory foods, supplements and Breath Work have the potential to dramatically improve recovery outcome. Based upon the most up-to-date information, the author has compiled a list of “Superfoods” to be used for meal planning. Although this book is not intended to be a cookbook, some easy to prepare “Super-Mood-Food” recipes are given to simplify meal planning. These recipes are categorized according to food “moods”, not as breakfast, lunch or dinner. Another focus of this book is stress reduction through the practice of Breath Work. Results of many scientific studies show that stress increases inflammatory biomarkers and that controlled deep breathing decreases inflammation. Several simple Breath Work exercises are included to allow the GBS recoverer to practice in the comfort of his or her home. Improved sleep and mood may also be experienced in a short period of time with regular practice. Once the benefits of implementing a highly antioxidant diet and routine Breath Work are realized, it is anticipated that these lifestyle changes may become permanent, leading to a life of vitality and longevity.

Feelings of tingling and weakness increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. Download or read book A First Step Understanding Guillain Barre Syndrome written by Brain S. Langton and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part one of A First Step - Understanding Guillain-Barr Syndrome is a true, blow-by-blow account of the Author's encounter, as a healthy Canadian businessman, with a rare and devastating disease, Guillain-Barr Syndrome (G.B.S. for short). It describes his seven-month long struggle for life in 'Intensive Care' after receiving a grim prognosis, and his subsequent dogged determination to overcome the effects of that disease. The second part is devoted to short stories based on dreams and hallucinations experienced whilst he was in 'Intensive Care', which in themselves reveal something of what a patient was going through. They also serve to illustrate the narrow boundary between reality and the dream world, and which whilst making for entertaining reading, could possibly be the subject of further study. Although the Author is a layperson, in medical terms, it is believed this book will be an important aid to medical professionals and care-givers, providing as it does, new insights and a unique perspective on the effects, not only of the disease, Guillain-Barr Syndrome, but also of the handling and care of any long-term intensive care patient, and their subsequent rehabilitation. For the curious, it will answer many questions. For G.B.S. patients and their families it should provide inspirational reading. The foreword to the book has been written by Dr Frank Warshawski, MD, FRCPC, Director of Intensive Care, Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary. In addition to that prestigious involvement, the Author has been fortunate in receiving permission to use other material authored by exceptionally well qualified medical professionals, for which due credit is given in the 'Acknowledgements' section of the book, enabling him to produce not only an interesting publication, but an informative and educational one. In short, a 'must read' and deserving of a place on any medical bookshelf.

Download or read book Faith Through the Storm written by Jez Smith and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have suffered on so many fronts, losing my health to losing my family and all the pain that that caused me. I spent a whole year and more seemingly holding on through the worst storm I have ever been in. Physically there is still a long way to go and a long road is still before me but I know that God is not finished with healing me. Physically my recovery has been very slow and frustrating and I am sure that my frustration has shown itself in the pages of this book, however I can clearly say that I would not be where I am today without my faith in God. One Sunday members of my church prayed for me because I had just had results that showed that their was no nerve activity in my legs below my knees and that according to the doctors showed that I did have nerve damage in my legs, however a week after their prayers for me God gave me the strength to walk into church on my crutches. I had been able for some weeks to walk short distances around my home on my crutches with splints controlling the position of my feet so that I did not drag my toes on the floor. Although my lower legs were not healed of their weakness God gave me the strength to walk further than I had ever walked before, and for me that told me that without prayer we can not overcome or expect to see positive results. Prayer is always the answer as is Jesus! I still find today that I have to be very careful with how much I do on any given day as busy days do result in me being very fatigued. My energy levels do dip quite badly, living with disabilities does mean doing things differently and adapting and I have found that every day has its own set of challenges where it comes to my physical weaknesses. However I have found that when I lean on God he always gives me enough strength for each day.
Download or read book Marijuana As Medicine written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Download or read book Bed Number Ten written by Sue Baier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-03-31 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A patient's personal view of long term care. Seen through the eyes of a patient totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, this moving book takes you through the psychological and physical pain of an eleven month hospital stay. BED NUMBER TEN reads like a compelling novel, but is entirely factual. You will meet: The ICU staff who learned to communicate with the paralyzed woman - and those who did not bother. The physicians whose visits left her baffled about her own case. The staff and physicians who spoke to her and others who did not recognize her presence. The nurse who tucked Sue tightly under the covers, unaware that she was soaking with perspiration. The nurse who took the time to feed her drop by drop, as she slowly learned how to swallow again. The physical therapist who could read her eyes and spurred her on to move again as if the battle were his own. In these pages, which reveal the caring, the heroism, and the insensitivity sometimes found in the health care fields, you may even meet people you know.
