Book excerpt: The elegiac poet Propertius responds in his verse to the complex changes that Rome underwent in his lifetime, taking on numerous topics of poetry, poetic and sexual rivalry, visual art, violence, imperialism, colonialism, civil war, the radical new emperor Augustus, and more. These essays, by well-known scholars of Roman elegy, offer new ways of reading Propertius' topics, attitudes, and poetics. This book begins with two distinguished essays by influential Propertian scholar Barbara Flaschenriem, who passed away unexpectedly. The other contributions, offered in her memory, are by Diane Rayor, Andrew Feldherr, Ellen Greene, Lowell Bowditch, Alison Keith, and volume editor Sharon L. James. These essays explore themes including Propertian didacticism, dream interpretation, visual art and formalism, sex and violence, Roman imperialism and its connection to the elegiac puella, and Propertius' engagement, in Book 4, with Vergil's poetry.

Book Roman Receptions of Sappho

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thea S. Thorsen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-12-17
  • ISBN : 019256482X
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book Roman Receptions of Sappho written by Thea S. Thorsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sappho, a towering figure in Western culture, is an exemplary case in the history of classical receptions. There are three prominent reasons for this. Firstly, Sappho is associated with some of the earliest poetry in the classical tradition, which makes her reception history one of the longest we know of. Furthermore, Sappho's poetry promotes ideologically challenging concepts such as female authority and homoeroticism, which have prompted very conspicuous interpretative strategies to deal with issues of gender and sexuality, revealing the values of the societies that have received her works through time. Finally, Sappho's legacy has been very well explored from the perspective of reception studies: important investigations have been made into responses both to her as poet-figure and to her poetry from her earliest reception through to our own time. However, one of the few eras in Sappho's longstanding reception history that has not been systematically explored before this volume is the Roman period. The omission is a paradox. Receptions of Sappho can be traced in more than eighteen Roman poets, among them many of the most central authors in the history of Latin literature. Surely, few other Greek poets can rival the impact of Sappho at Rome. This important fact calls out for a systematic approach to Sappho's Roman reception, which is the aim of Roman Receptions of Sappho that focuses on the poetry of the central period of Roman literary history, from the time of Lucretius to that of Martial.

She might look like Snow White, but she had the heart of a wicked queen. She turned her enemies to ash, she danced on their graves, and she had to be stopped. But who could stand up to someone so wicked? He was wild. Griffin Bastien was the most powerful shifter to ever walk the earth. His claws had sent plenty of his foes to the grave. Bloodlust burned fast and hard within him, and when his beast took over, there was no stopping him. Then Wicked met Wild. Neither of them believed in love. And neither of them ever expected the firestorm that ignited when they kissed. But some things—some people—can’t be controlled. The need that Valerie and Griffin feel for each other, the white-hot lust, will change their world. Even hell doesn’t burn this hot. Too bad that Griffin has been keeping secrets. Too bad that he is the original assassin sent to destroy Valerie. Because when she finds out the truth, there will be no greater fury than a wicked witch betrayed. Even the biggest, baddest beast might discover that he’s absolutely lost when a witch casts her spell, and he will be willing to do anything to reclaim the mate he never expected. Buckle up, it’s gonna be a wild ride. Author's Note: WICKED AND WILD is a complete, stand-alone story that is set in the world of my "Bad Things" paranormal books. Book Propertius in Love

Download or read book Propertius in Love written by Sextus Propertius and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-06-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These ardent, even obsessed, poems about erotic passion are among the brightest jewels in the crown of Latin literature. Written by Propertius, Rome's greatest poet of love, who was born around 50 b.c., a contemporary of Ovid, these elegies tell of Propertius' tormented relationship with a woman he calls "Cynthia." Their connection was sometimes blissful, more often agonizing, but as the poet came to recognize, it went beyond pride or shame to become the defining event of his life. Whether or not it was Propertius' explicit intention, these elegies extend our ideas of desire, and of the human condition itself.

Book Imagining the Chorus in Augustan Poetry

Download or read book Imagining the Chorus in Augustan Poetry written by Lauren Curtis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From archaic Sparta to classical Athens the chorus was a pervasive feature of Greek social and cultural life. Until now, however, its reception in Roman literature and culture has been little appreciated. This book examines how the chorus is reimagined in a brief but crucial period in the history of Latin literature, the early Augustan period from 30 to 10 BCE. It argues that in the work of Horace, Virgil, and Propertius, the language and imagery of the chorus articulate some of their most pressing concerns surrounding social and literary belonging in a rapidly changing Roman world. By re-examining seminal Roman texts such as Horace's Odes and Virgil's Aeneid from this fresh perspective, the book connects the history of musical culture with Augustan poetry's interrogation of fundamental questions surrounding the relationship between individual and community, poet and audience, performance and writing, Greek and Roman, and tradition and innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's last authentic overnight wooden steamboat, the Delta Queen cruised America's inland waters from 1927 through 2008, offering passengers breathtaking views, luxury accommodations, rousing entertainment, and southern-style feasts. For over eighty-two years, chefs in the small galley served memorable meals—from fried chicken and crawfish en croûte to strawberry shortcake and beignets. The Delta Queen Cookbook brings the Delta Queen's story to life with an engaging historical narrative and over 125 recipes prepared by the steamboat's former chefs during their tenures in the cookhouse. Nobles traces the story of the "Grand Old Lady" as she faced remarkable social, economic, and political challenges. The Delta Queen became a haven for illegal drinking during Prohibition, and she survived the effects of the Great Depression, World War II, and increasingly modern and sophisticated competition. Despite the obstacles, this flapper-era boat always found a seamless way to coddle passengers with cozy staterooms and delectable fare. Each chapter ends with authentic Delta Queen recipes—including Citrus and Watercress Salad with Chili Dressing, Roast Duck and Wild Rice Soup, Speckled Trout Pecan, Eggs Crawkitty, Steamboat Pudding, and more—proportioned and tested for home kitchens. The Delta Queen Cookbook includes interviews with former crew, chefs, and passengers; over ninety historical and full-color photographs; and vintage and modern menus. History buffs, steamboat lovers, and home cooks alike will revel in the memories and tastes that make the Delta Queen one of America's best-loved national treasures.
