Download or read book Let s Stop Calling it an Achievement Gap written by Autumn A. Arnett and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1980 and 2005, 45 states were involved in lawsuits around equity of funding and adequacy of education provided to all students in the state. Indeed, this investigation could have included any cities in America, and the themes likely would have been the same: Lower funding and resources, disproportionate numbers of teachers and school leaders who do not look like the students they serve, debates over the public’s responsibility to provide fair and equitable education for all students in the jurisdiction, implicit biases from the top to the bottom and a resegregation of schools in America. Integration for Black families was never about an idea that Black students were better off if they could be around White students, it was about the idea that Black students would be better off if they could have access to the same education that White students had — but residential segregation still enables de facto school segregation, when it isn’t coded into policy. For the overwhelming majority of Black students, they’re stuck in segregated, underperforming schools. Schools where the teachers are dedicated to the mission, but where the cities and districts and states have failed to uphold their basic responsibility to maintain the upkeep of the schools and provide enough desks for each child and current textbooks.
Download or read book Calling It Quits Late Life Divorce and Starting Over written by Deirdre Bair and published by Argo-Navis. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some gave the usual reasons: "He traded me in for a trophy wife younger than our daughter," or "We had nothing in common anymore," or I couldn't take his ...{fill in the blank - gambling, drinking, womanizing]." But I also heard a lot of stories from men and women who I though lived comfortable, contented lives in financially secure marriages and who said that they didn't care what the future might hold, that they divorced because they could not go on living the same old life in the same old rut with the same old boring person. I heard a lot of remarks that all came down to one word: freedom. -- From Calling it Quits This is the first book to reveal the truth about the exploding phenomenon of late-life divorce, which has resulted in a seismic shift in modern relationships. Now, in a finger-on-the-pulse examination of this growing trend, Deirdre Bair, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the National Book Award, explores the many reasons why older, long-married couples suddenly decide to break up. Having conducted nearly four hundred interviews with ex-wives, ex-husbands, and their adult children, Bair reveals some of the surprising motivations that lead to these drastic late-life splits, as well as the unexpected turns life takes for all concerned after the divorce is final.

Download or read book Calling Bullshit written by Carl T. Bergstrom and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullshit isn’t what it used to be. Now, two science professors give us the tools to dismantle misinformation and think clearly in a world of fake news and bad data. “A modern classic . . . a straight-talking survival guide to the mean streets of a dying democracy and a global pandemic.”—Wired Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound and it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s true. Our media environment has become hyperpartisan. Science is conducted by press release. Startup culture elevates bullshit to high art. We are fairly well equipped to spot the sort of old-school bullshit that is based in fancy rhetoric and weasel words, but most of us don’t feel qualified to challenge the avalanche of new-school bullshit presented in the language of math, science, or statistics. In Calling Bullshit, Professors Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West give us a set of powerful tools to cut through the most intimidating data. You don’t need a lot of technical expertise to call out problems with data. Are the numbers or results too good or too dramatic to be true? Is the claim comparing like with like? Is it confirming your personal bias? Drawing on a deep well of expertise in statistics and computational biology, Bergstrom and West exuberantly unpack examples of selection bias and muddled data visualization, distinguish between correlation and causation, and examine the susceptibility of science to modern bullshit. We have always needed people who call bullshit when necessary, whether within a circle of friends, a community of scholars, or the citizenry of a nation. Now that bullshit has evolved, we need to relearn the art of skepticism.

The boxes contain the remains of people who are insured for a million dollars... Wiley Tel Cleave is his name and he is what is known as an "exact". He has two right hands and he works for the Judges of The "Perfect" City of Villa Village located in the "Rain Forest" of Texas. He goes from Texas to California and on to Nevada and many other places all over the U.S. in the underground cavern of the nation. He is great at jumping out of windows and landing on his feet. He is sometime believed to be the killer of the people he is looking for in these floating caskets. He is a very mysterious kind of guy and some times really pitiful. He is not a great fighter and can dive off three hundred feet bridges and land on his feet but he is a little afraid of his girl friend. He will make you wonder if there is really a rain forest deep in the heard of Texas. And is there really a man traveling in the cravens of the U.S.A. looking for the people who were sat sail in the great flood? What is "Wind Bucket"? What are the other "exact" people like? Two heads, or lips? Did a man really make a billion dollars insuring these people already dead? So what is that under your feet? A bookworm or what are you anyway???

Book excerpt: I Call it Heresy is a vibrant study of the Lordship controversy long before it became a major player on the theological stage. A.W. Tozer tackles the heresy of accepting Jesus Christ as Savior but believing you postpone accepting him as lord over your life. In I Call It Heresy, A.W. Tozer uses 1 Peter as his base to launch out into such themes as holiness, humility, the qualities of our divine inheritance and nine other timely topics. Originally from Tozer Pulpit, vol. 5, this collection of sermons and reflections on 1 Peter addresses very interesting and timely issues. It highlights the appeal of being of Christ's followers and being under His Lordship, helping us to say, "How satisfying it is to be under His authority!"
