Book Descending Into Greatness

Download or read book Descending Into Greatness written by Bill Hybels and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a society where "upward mobility" is the highest goal, Bill Hybels asks a tough question: Do Christians place God's desires first-or their own? In Descending into Greatness, Hybels and writer Rob Wilkins take the example of Christ's downward journey as it was meant to be; the radical and essential answer for every Christian. In fourteen powerful chapters, the authors explore such topics as How Jesus managed power. The intentional decisions necessary to move down. The uplifting nature of true humility. Abundant life through dying to self. The ambush of joy. Moving down is never an easy matter that can be reduced to a formula. It involves a life committed to discipleship. Descending into Greatness introduces you to the touching stories of modern men and women committed to advancing the kingdom of God: from the pro football player, to the medical missionary, to a businessman wrestling with the priorities in the world of finance. Descending into Greatness asks tough questions and gives hopeful answers. Now, this powerful, urgent message also includes a discussion guide so that you can follow through, too. "Like Christ, we must descend-into self-abandonment, unconditional giving, sacrifice, and death to self. And, like Christ, we will then ascend-into fulfillment, blessing, joy, and purpose."

Book The School of Greatness

Download or read book The School of Greatness written by Lewis Howes and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a career-ending injury left elite athlete and professional football player Lewis Howes out of work and living on his sister’s couch, he decided he needed to make a change for the better. He started by reaching out to people he admired, searching for mentors, and applying his past coaches’ advice from sports to life off the field. Lewis did more than bounce back: He built a multimillion-dollar online business and is now a sought-after business coach, speaker, and podcast host. In The School of Greatness, Howes shares the essential tips and habits he gathered in interviewing “the greats” on his wildly popular podcast of the same name. In discussion with people like Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and Pencils of Promise CEO Adam Braun, Howes figured out that greatness is unearthed and cultivated from within. The masters of greatness are not successful because they got lucky or are innately more talented, but because they applied specific habits and tools to embrace and overcome adversity in their lives. A framework for personal development, The School of Greatness gives you the tools, knowledge, and actionable resources you need to reach your potential. Howes anchors each chapter with a specific lesson he culled from his greatness “professors” and his own experiences to teach you how to create a vision, develop hustle, and use dedication, mindfulness, joy, and love to reach goals. His lessons and practical exercises prove that anyone is capable of achieving success and that we can all strive for greatness in our everyday lives.

Book Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned

Download or read book Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned written by Kenneth O. Stanley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does modern life revolve around objectives? From how science is funded, to improving how children are educated -- and nearly everything in-between -- our society has become obsessed with a seductive illusion: that greatness results from doggedly measuring improvement in the relentless pursuit of an ambitious goal. In Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned, Stanley and Lehman begin with a surprising scientific discovery in artificial intelligence that leads ultimately to the conclusion that the objective obsession has gone too far. They make the case that great achievement can't be bottled up into mechanical metrics; that innovation is not driven by narrowly focused heroic effort; and that we would be wiser (and the outcomes better) if instead we whole-heartedly embraced serendipitous discovery and playful creativity. Controversial at its heart, yet refreshingly provocative, this book challenges readers to consider life without a destination and discovery without a compass.

Book Tap Into Greatness

Download or read book Tap Into Greatness written by Sarah Singer-Nourie and published by RDA Press, LLC. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point, every single one of us has reached a point of frustration. A situation where we knew that we were having impact that was far less than what we were capable of. Large organizations are filled with smart people who have great ideas. Unfortunately, most of these people find themselves stymied in their ability to bring people to their full potential and ideas to fruition It doesn’t have to be that way. In Tap Into Greatness, noted performance coach and educator Sarah Singer-Nourie reveals the key truths of having outsized impact, influence and power. It turns out that most of us aren’t leading. We’re simply managing. We’re getting things done, but we’re not inspiring others to excel beyond what’s expected. Great leaders know better. They know leadership isn’t magic. It’s not just something you’re born with. Leadership is learnable. In this engaging and hands-on book, Singer-Nourie provides tools that have been developed over the last twenty years in her work with leaders and teams in corporate America, Silicon Valley startups, schools and non-profit organizations. The methodology is based on how people actually learn, rather than how most of us were taught in school. It leverages the insights of human motivation and the latest research in neuroscience to give leaders a roadmap for having impact. Readers who put the tools of Tap Into Greatness into practice have immediate and often surprising results. They find themselves able to influence colleagues who were previously unmoved. They’re able to inspire teammates to go above and beyond the call of duty. And they create teams that make better decisions even when the leader isn’t in the room.

Book Seven Men

Download or read book Seven Men written by Eric Metaxas and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Seven Men, New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas presents seven exquisitely crafted short portraits of widely known—but not well understood—Christian men, each of whom uniquely showcases a commitment to live by certain virtues in the truth of the gospel. Written in a beautiful and engaging style, Seven Men addresses what it means (or should mean) to be a man today, at a time when media and popular culture present images of masculinity that are not the picture presented in Scripture and historic civil life. This book answers questions like: What does it take to be a true exemplar as a father, brother, husband, leader, coach, counselor, change agent, and wise man? What does it mean to stand for honesty, courage, and charity? And how can you stand especially at times when the culture and the world run counter to those values? Each of the seven biographies represents the life of a man who experienced the struggles and challenges to be strong in the face of forces and circumstances that would have destroyed the resolve of lesser men. Each of the seven men profiled—George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, and Charles Colson—call the reader to a more elevated walk and lifestyle, one that embodies the gospel in the world around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During one of his memorable speeches, President JFK declared, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." This speech marked the beginning of the Peace Corps program in the United States, which in turn led a young American to my small farming village of Agadji in Togo, West Africa. This young American sponsored me into the United States in June of 1989, a fulfillment in itself of my father's secretly held dream to see one of his children educated in an English-speaking Country, better yet in the United States of America. Education has always been very important to my father because he was denied that opportunity due to being an orphan at a very young age. He wished to attend school and become a lawyer or doctor, but instead, he was forced to become a farmer and eventually one of the best-known coffee growers in Togo. In June of 1999, I was able to invite my father to the United States for a year-long visit, during which I was able to enroll him in Kalamazoo Adult Education as another way to fulfill his dream of being a student. In October 2001, I invited my dear mother also to the United States for a year-long visit, giving both my wonderful parents a unique and unforgettable their FIRST plane ride experience. Travel along with me as I journey through a father and son's dream to a better tomorrow.

Download or read book Primary Greatness written by Stephen R. Covey and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Stephen R. Covey—the late, legendary author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People—a set of principles for achieving a happy and fulfilling life of primary greatness. Many of us are hurting. We have chronic problems, dissatisfactions, and disappointments. Although we generally make it through the day, a lot of us feel overwhelmed by burdens we carry. We try to “lift the load of life” each day and sometimes it’s just too much. The idea of living a “great life” seems a distant dream. Stephen R. Covey believed there were only two ways to experience life: primary greatness or secondary greatness. Through his books and speaking, he taught that the intrinsic rewards of primary greatness—integrity, responsibility, and contribution—far outweighed the extrinsic rewards of secondary greatness—money, popularity, and the self-absorbed, pleasure-ridden life that some people consider “success.” In this posthumous work, Covey lays out clearly the 12 levers of success that will lead to a life of primary greatness: Integrity, Contribution, Priority, Sacrifice, Service, Responsibility, Loyalty, Reciprocity, Diversity, Learning, Teaching, and Renewal. For the first time, Covey defines each of these 12 qualities and how they can be leveraged and enacted in your daily life to lead you to success and happiness. Featuring his trademarked wisdom that is beloved and has inspired countless readers and leaders, Primary Greatness once again delivers classic Covey advice in a concise and reader-friendly way.

Book Forever Recognize Others Greatness

Download or read book Forever Recognize Others Greatness written by Sarah McVanel and published by BPS Books. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to countless engagement surveys and polls, the majority of employees today want to feel more valued and to contribute in more meaningful ways. The results of disengagement are devastating: Top talent is considering or acting on their exit plan. Employees who remain are blocked from giving their talents, passions, and virtues to their workplace. Organizations are failing to satisfy their customers and are missing opportunities to innovate and keep their business viable. It doesn't have to be this way. In this book, based on their new recognition approach, FROGTM – Forever Recognize Others' Greatness – Sarah McVanel and Brenda Zalter-Minden show what happens when leaders and employees pay close attention to the essential greatness within themselves and one another: - Employees, no matter what their skill set and across every industry, are motivated to leverage their skills and passion - Teams flourish - Top talent is retained - And the mission of the organization is achieved Using numerous examples of success from their consulting work, the authors call for a revolutionary approach to recognition that: - Is solution-focused, affirming what is already working for each and every person rather than emphasizing failures and problems - Imagines best possible scenarios for individuals, teams, and organizations - Sets a strengths-based plan for individuals, with clear next steps - Becomes a continuous process in which everyone contributes to the humanity of their workplace one positive intent at a time

Book Gods at Play An Eyewitness Account of Great Moments in American Sports

Download or read book Gods at Play An Eyewitness Account of Great Moments in American Sports written by Tom Callahan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully observed narrative of American sport: character, grit, tragedy, unremarked heroism, and, always, the illuminating story behind the story. As a columnist for Time magazine, among many other publications, Tom Callahan witnessed an extraordinary number of defining moments in American sport across four decades. He takes us from Roberto Clemente clinching his 3,000th, and final, regular-season hit in Pittsburgh; to ringside for the Muhammad Ali–George Foreman fight in Zaire; and to Arthur Ashe announcing, at a news conference, that he’d tested positive for HIV. There are also little-known private moments: Joe Morgan whispering thank you to a virtually blind Jackie Robinson on the field at the 1972 World Series, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar saying he was more interested in being a good man than in being the greatest basketball player. Brimming with colorful vignettes and enlivened by Callahan’s eye for detail, Gods at Play offers surprising portraits of the most celebrated names in sports. Roger Rosenblatt calls Callahan “the most complete sportswriter in America. He knows the most and writes the best."

It's the psychological equivalent of aerodynamic lift, and it is the fundamental state of leadership. This book draws on recent advances in positive psychology and organizational science to describe four questions that, when asked in any situation, will help us experience the fundamental state of leadership. Engaging personal stories illustrate how the Quinns and others have applied these concepts at work, at home, and in the community. --
