Book excerpt: She has one last chance to prove she chose the right course for her life. In 1908, young Dorothy Tuckerman chafes under the bland, beige traditions of her socialite circles. Only the aristocracy’s annual summer trips to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia spark her imagination. In this naturally beautiful place, an unexpected romance with an Italian racecar driver gives Dorothy a taste of the passion and adventure she wants. But her family intervenes, sentencing Dorothy to the life she hopes to escape. Thirty-eight years later, as World War II draws to a close, Dorothy has done everything a woman in the early twentieth century should not: she has divorced her husband—scandalous—and established America’s first interior design firm—shocking. Now, Dorothy returns to The Greenbrier with the assignment to restore it to something even greater than its original glory. With her beloved company’s future hanging in the balance and brimming with daring, unconventional ideas, Dorothy has one more chance to give her dreams wings or succumb to her what society tells her is her inescapable fate. Based on the true story of famed designer Dorothy Draper, The Grand Design is a moving tale of one woman’s quest to transform the walls that hold her captive. “Five Stars!” —Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper & Company, Inc. “As captivating and confident as the heroine at its center.” —Kristy Woodson Harvey, New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Veil “Full of luscious details of fashion and luxury!” —Kelly O’Connor McNees, author of The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott “A dazzling, intimate portrait.” —Louise Claire Johnson, author of Behind the Red Door “Historical fiction at its finest!” —Elyssa Friedland, author of Last Summer at the Golden Hotel Historical novel centered around America’s first female interior designer Stand-alone novel Book length: 109,000 words Includes discussion questions for book clubs

Download or read book Secret Sisters written by Joy Callaway and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nineteenth-century student at a Midwestern college fights to establish the first sorority in this novel by the author of The Fifth Avenue Artists Society. Illinois, 1881: Whitsitt College sophomore Beth Carrington has two goals to fulfill by the time she graduates: obtain a medical degree, and establish a women’s fraternity, Beta Xi Beta, that will help young women like herself to connect with and support one another while attending the male-dominated Whitsitt. Neither is an easy task. The sole female student in the physicians’ program, Beth is constantly called out by her professors and peers for having the audacity not to concentrate on a more “fitting” subject like secretarial studies. Meanwhile, secret organizations are off-limits, and simply by crowding together in a dank basement room and creating a sense of camaraderie, she and her small group of fraternity sisters risk expulsion. In order to have the fraternity recognized, she knows she needs help. She turns to the most powerful student on campus: senior Grant Richardson, Iota Gamma fraternity president and the scion of a Whitsitt family—a man she’s only acquainted with because of her longstanding friendship with his fraternity brother Will Buchannan. Staunchly traditional, Grant doesn’t see the purpose of this women’s organization, but captivated by Beth, he agrees to give her a helping hand. What she doesn’t know is how many will stop at nothing to keep her burgeoning organization out of the record books—and who she can actually trust along the way. As Beth fights for her beloved Beta Xi Beta to be recognized, she will uncover deep secrets about the college and those who surround her, and will have to put both love and friendship on the line so that history can be made. Praise for Secret Sisters “A shining example of the power of persistent women united in their aim to reshape history. . . . Callaway has done a beautiful job bringing to light this little-known story of America’s first women’s fraternity and so much more.” —Sarah McCoy, New York Times–bestselling author of The Baker’s Daughter and The Mapmaker’s Children “An elegant book with enormous heart. . . . You’ll fly through this perfect summer read, and fall in love with the sisters of Beta Xi Beta.” —Karin Tanabe, author of The Gilded Years “This compulsive, feminist read is a rich drama. . . . The atmosphere of the era feels authentic and draws readers into college life while immersing them in the characters’ experiences.” —RT Book Reviews

Book excerpt: The city of Callaway is located in the Florida Panhandle near the Gulf Coast. Settlers migrated to the area beginning in the 1800s, and in 1856, Pitt Milner Callaway purchased property there, hoping to create a large seaport town. He operated a sawmill, but when it was destroyed in a hurricane in 1858, he left the area and did not return until the 1880s. During the land boom, he built another sawmill and began planning wider streets and home sites. Success in fishing, sawmills, boat building, and a paper mill allowed for growth in the community, which was first incorporated in 1936 with Mayor Albert Reese Patterson. Today the city honors its first mayor, who served for 23 years and lived to be 100, every year on his birthday.

Download or read book The Civil War Letters of Joshua K Callaway written by Joshua K. Callaway and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Kentucky Campaign to Tullahoma, Chickamauga to Missionary Ridge, junior officer Joshua K. Callaway took part in some of the most critical campaigns of the Civil War. His twice-weekly letters home, written between April 1862 and November 1863, chronicle his gradual change from an ardent Confederate soldier to a weary veteran who longs to be at home. Callaway was a schoolteacher, husband, and father of two when he enlisted in the 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment at the age of twenty-seven. Serving with the Army of the Tennessee, he campaigned in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and north Georgia. Along the way this perceptive observer and gifted writer wrote a continuous narrative detailing the activities, concerns, hopes, fears, discomforts, and pleasures of a Confederate soldier in the field. Whether writing about combat, illness, encampments, or homesickness, Callaway makes even the everyday aspects of soldiering interesting. This large collection, seventy-four letters in all, is a valuable historical reference that provides new insights into life behind the front lines of the Civil War.

Download or read book Thanks Ely written by Rich Overturf and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First of all, Ely Callaway was a formidable leader, somewhat like a military general who provided a high profile, daring example for his lieutenants to emulate. He avoided micro managing his staff to afford them the opportunity to excel, but he was in charge, assuredly, he was in charge. The book illustrates his leadership skills from the days of his youth and onward through three totally different but successful careers in the textile industry, the art of wine making, and his greatest triumph in forging the largest golf equipment company in the world. It is inevitable that the story concentrates on the Callaway Golf Company, since the firm exemplified the vision of a man dedicated to marshalling human and material assets to bring superior products to the market that consumers would clamor for. The reader will learn how Callaway creatively used marketing tools to satisfy consumers and retain brand name loyalty. But the book is also the tale of a man with human flaws. Anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book illustrate Callaway’s laudable personal activities and occasions when human shortcomings led to missteps in his life. Finally, the book has an international flavor. The reach of Callaway Golf Company spans the oceans, and reportage from overseas media sources has been extensive. Information from those sources has been included to disclose how Callaway Golf leadership has been viewed outside the USA.

Book The Aesthetics of Atheism

Download or read book The Aesthetics of Atheism written by Kutter Callaway and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To really understand God, you have to understand atheism. Atheism and Christianity are often placed at polar opposite ends of a spectrum, forever in stark conflict with each other. In The Aesthetics of Atheism, Kutter Callaway and Barry Taylor propose a radical alternative: atheism and theism need each other. In fact, atheism offers profound and necessary theological insights into the heart of Christianity itself. To get at these truths, Callaway and Taylor dive into the aesthetic dimensions of atheism, using everything from Stranger Things to Damien Hirst's controversial sculptures to the music of David Bowie, Nick Cave, and Leonard Cohen. This journey through contemporary culture and its imagination offers readers a deeper understanding of theology, culture, and how to engage faith in a chaotic and complex world where God is present in the most unexpected place: atheism.
