Book excerpt: Eloy Baines openly admits he enjoys being a Neanderthal--almost as much as he enjoys the game of golf and cavorting with his pals on the Texas Panhandle Bar-B-Que Circuit. When he is not golfing, he is drowning his troubles in a glass of scotch and writing poetry. Luckily, he has his pals to keep him focused on his favorite things: golf, hard booze, and soft women. Eloy and his golfing buddies attempt to go about life, both on and off the course, in the best way they know how. As the men refine their swings and putting abilities each weekend, each of them fights against--and often loses to--the personal demons that continuously haunt them as they immerse themselves in setting course records, drinking, and carousing with shameless women. But it is not long before Elroy discovers that nothing is ever guaranteed in the game of golf, life, or relationships with women, especially in West Texas. The Breeze continues the tale of a group of crazy Texas characters who are inevitably bound as friends as they golf the Bar-B-Que circuit and realize that the party never ends.

Download or read book Call Me Lucky written by Mike Farris and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Do you think you could teach Rock Hudson to talk like you do?” The question came from famed Hollywood director George Stevens, and an affirmative answer propelled Bob Hinkle into a fifty-year career in Hollywood as a speech coach, actor, producer, director, and friend to the stars. Along the way, Hinkle helped Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper, Carroll Baker, and Mercedes McCambridge talk like Texans for the 1956 epic film Giant. He also helped create the character Jett Rink with James Dean, who became a best friend, and he consoled Elizabeth Taylor personally when Dean was killed in a tragic car accident before the film was released. A few years later, Paul Newman asked Hinkle to do for him what he’d done for James Dean. The result was Newman’s powerful portrayal of a Texas no-good in the Academy Award–winning film Hud (1963). Hinkle could—and did—stop by the LBJ Ranch to exchange pleasantries with the president of the United States. He did likewise with Elvis Presley at Graceland. Good friends with Robert Wagner, Hinkle even taught Wagner’s wife Natalie Wood how to throw a rope. He appeared in numerous television series, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Dragnet, and Walker, Texas Ranger. On a handshake, he worked as country music legend Marty Robbins’s manager, and he helped Evel Knievel rise to fame. From his birth in Brownfield, Texas, to a family so poor “they could only afford a tumbleweed as a pet,” Hinkle went on to gain acclaim in Hollywood. Through it all, he remained the salty, down-to-earth former rodeo cowboy from West Texas who could talk his way into—or out of—most any situation. More than forty photographs, including rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of the stars Hinkle met and befriended along the way, complement this rousing, never-dull memoir.

Book excerpt: The entire series is a loose story of a group of people thrown together in 599 AD in a foreign land, Britain. They band together and found leadership in a quirky man named Jeffrey. Jeffrey was an average man of moral ideals, proper wit, and odd behavior who enjoys living life, and the ladies. Jeff’s unsurmountable strength is founded in the need to love others and save lives. The first book, The Beginning, displays how it all began. From the first plop into the 6th Century on forward, our first quest in that of attaining personal safety. As usual, we must fight for survival and now is during the time of the Roman Decline, when pulling troops out of England. We decided to build a castle and have this as our home. Jeffrey was Knighted by King Arthur and became king of the south-west land. We had to defend ourselves against some usual and other mythical and other mysterious beings, including aliens flying pyramids and Zeus and the Greek Gods. We went toe-to-toe with saber-tooth tigers, and creepy, freaky, spastic murderers with claws we called Tweakers, sorry about the profiling. We fought aliens from another planet, some Mexicans too. We fought giant monsters, most of which we did not know about their desire to fight. Mythical creatures came to life. Some of our foes became allies and our population of misfits grew. The King’s most trusted advisors consist of some from Jeff's past and some new people with new characteristics who must bond into the team that may survive the adventures. At every turn, there is a surprise or mystery or smile or death. They are dedicated to hard work and practice. They have vowed to do the next right thing. And they play pretty hard, everywhere.

Download or read book Little Green written by Loretta Stinson and published by Hawthorne Books. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Little Green, Loretta Stinson’s stunning, redemptive first novel, tragedy leaves Janie Marek orphaned and in the care of her stepmother. The novel opens two years later, in 1976, when Janie, at fourteen, runs away. A ride she’s hitchhiked leaves her on the freeway outside a Northwestern town. A strip club called The Habit is the closest thing within walking distance, and Janie finds herself working there. Janie falls for Paul Jesse, a drug dealer, and moves in with him as he spirals into addiction and becomes physically abusive. As the violence escalates, Janie finds a job in a bookstore and begins to establish her independence. Leaving Paul after a brutal beating, Janie must reconcile their relationship and make the most difficult, most dangerous choice she’ll ever make. Like Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Carolina and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Loretta Stinson portrays the psychology of a woman who has experienced violence at the hands of someone she loves and the complexity of leaving with sensitivity and insight. This is a life-affirming story about a woman who finds strength in books, in the promise of education, and in the community of friends who help her find a way out.
