Book Report of the Railroad Commission of California

Download or read book Report of the Railroad Commission of California written by Railroad Commission of California and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Railroad Commission of California: From January 1, 1911, to June 30, 1912 Commission at that time to do many things Of value to the State, and in addition, we have actively worked with the legislature and its committees with a view to better legislation and changes in the Constitution which would bring about effective regulation Of all utilities; and we believe that with some minor imperfections the Public Utilities Act as it stands in California today is the furthest advanced in utility regulation in existence. Naturally much difficulty was encountered with the railroads origi nally, when they were solely within our jurisdiction, and with the other utilities after control over them had been placed in the hands Of this Commission, in securing information necessary to proper decision Of cases. We, however, have proceeded to the best of our ability to get all information necessary, and have decided all cases promptly, and any delays which may have occurred have been the direct result of the failure of the utilities to furnish the required information. It is doubtful if any other commission has, within a similar period, rendered more decisions of far-reaching effect, but regardless of this fact, but once have this Commission's decisions been taken into court, and then the Commission was promptly sustained. We have endeavored to act with the utmost fairness toward the utility and the public, and as a fixed policy have always endeavored to have our decisions so fair that no litigant would desire to contest them, but so strongly fortified in the evidence and so carefully prepared as to form that even though a litigant desired to contest them such contest would avail nothing. Download or read book Sunset Limited written by Richard J. Orsi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only major U.S. railroad to be operated by westerners and the only railroad built from west to east, the Southern Pacific acquired a unique history and character. It also acquired a reputation, especially in California, as a railroad that people loved to hate. This magisterial history tells the full story of the Southern Pacific for the first time, shattering myths about the company that have prevailed to this day. A landmark account, Sunset Limited explores the railroad's development and influence—especially as it affected land settlement, agriculture, water policy, and the environment—and offers a new perspective on the tremendous, often surprising, role the company played in shaping the American West. Based on his unprecedented and extensive research into the company's historical archives, Richard Orsi finds that, contrary to conventional understanding, the Southern Pacific Company identified its corporate well-being with population growth and social and economic development in the railroad's hinterland. As he traces the complex and shifting intersections between corporate and public interest, Orsi documents the railroad's little-known promotion of land distribution, small-scale farming, scientific agriculture, and less wasteful environmental practices and policies—including water conservation and wilderness and recreational parklands preservation. Meticulously researched, lucidly written, and judiciously balanced, Sunset Limited opens a new window onto the American West in a crucial phase of its development and will forever change our perceptions of one of the largest and most important western corporations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sierra Railway is one of the most intact steam railroads in the United States. It is operated today by California State Parks to interpret and celebrate the importance of steam railroading in California history. Located in the Gold Rush town of Jamestown, in Tuolumne County, the railway began operations in 1897 and played an important role in developing the economy of Tuolumne and adjoining Calaveras County. While nearly all other steam short-line railroads in the United States were dismantled in the 1950s, the Sierra line has survived in a remarkably complete condition. The railway was a big hit among railfans, who flocked to it as early as the 1930s and in increasing numbers in the 1950s. Now operated as Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, the steam operation of the railroad is very much alive.
