Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, writing Chronicles of San Quentin was first suggested to Kenneth Lamott during a spell as a teacher at that California prison in the 1950’s. The book not only chronicles the history and highlights of one of America’s most famous penitentiaries, but it also reflects the changes in prisons in the U.S. over the last 100 years. Calmly informing us that there were over 4,000 murders in California between 1849-1855, Lamott quickly justifies the terrible need the state had for prisons other than lax, badly run county and city jails. But San Quentin itself, which started as a floating prison hulk, was little better. Here are its famous prisoners, riots and escapes, its floggings and brutalities, its executions too. With the coming of the “New Era” penology in the 1890’s, the change to more humane and rational treatment of prisoners is shown. The Clinton Duffy era is dealt with at great length—its shortcomings are shown along with its humane virtues—and prison life including the Chessman execution, is portrayed with sympathy and understanding. A highly readable book.

Book Danger and Trust

Download or read book Danger and Trust written by R. Theodore Davidson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir describes the many unexpected things that occurred during Ted Davidson's unique research among Chicano prisoners at San Quentin Prison and in the Chicano movement in California, from 1966 until 1997. www.danger-trust.com. He reached the depths of the prisoners' own illegal culture via the secretive deadly if crossed Mexican Mafia. A very few highlights during those 31 years: Ted was kicked out of San Quentin by prison administrators for revealing staff secrets to the media. He was repeatedly set up by undercover FBI agent provocateurs posing as students, who tried to provoke him into doing things he would never imagine doing. Ted was fired from Cabrillo College for criticizing California Department of Corrections and protesting the U.S. bombing of Cambodia. He wrote a popular ethnography, Chicano Prisoners: The Key to San Quentin--in print from 1974 until 2002. Ted lived under a death threat against him and his family for six weeks. He cut his San Quentin and Chicano ties in 1979. Still, in 1997, Ted wisely refused to testify in a case against 12 Mexican Mafia members who were convicted by the U.S. government of racketeering, conspiracy, murder and extortion.

Book The Rise and Fall of California s Radical Prison Movement

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of California s Radical Prison Movement written by Eric Cummins and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the California prison movement from 1950 to 1980, focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area's San Quentin State Prison and highlighting the role that prison reading and writing played in the creation of radical inmate ideology in those years. The book begins with the Caryl Chessman years (1948-60) and closes with the trial of the San Quentin Six (1975-76) and the passage of California's Determinate Sentencing Law (1977). This was an extraordinary era in the California prisons, one that saw the emergence of a highly developed radical convict resistance movement inside prison walls. This inmate groundswell was fueled at times by remarkable individual prisoners, at other times by groups like the Black Muslims or the San Quentin chapter of the Black Panther Party. But most often resistance grew from much wider sources and in quiet corners: from dozens of political study groups throughout the prison; from an underground San Quentin newspaper; and from covert attempts to organize a prisoners' union. The book traces the rise and fall of the prisoners' movement, ending with the inevitably bloody confrontation between prisoners and the state and the subsequent prison administration crackdown. The author examines the efforts of prison staff to augment other methods of inmate management by attempting to modify convict ideology by means of "bibliotherapy" and communication control, and describes convict resistance to these attempts as control. He also discusses how Bay Area political activists became intensely involved in San Quentin and how such writings as Chessman's Cell 2455, Cleaver's Soul on Ice, and Jackson's Soledad Brother reached far beyond prison walls to influence opinion, events, and policy.

Book Chronicles of a Prison Dirty War

Download or read book Chronicles of a Prison Dirty War written by Louis C Powell, Jr and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades of the 1960's and 1970's were turbulent years in the history of the California Department of Corrections. During these years prisons all across California were dangerous battle fields, as inmates waged war against one another. It was during this time period groups that such as the Black Guerrilla Family, Nuestra Familia, La Eme and Aryan Brotherhood came to prominence. The transformation of American society that was occurring outside of the prison walls was also being played out in its own way behind prison walls. Prison gangs, which largely formed along racial lines battled for respect, protection of their race and for control of pieces of the lucrative underground prison economy. Author Louis Powell takes readers on a journey into the world of prison politics. His raw telling of first hand accounts of brutal battles between inmates and incidents of treachery by prison staff that helped to fuel these battles are real eye openers. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in prison politics.
