Download or read book Criminal Investigation Fourth Edition written by Michael J. Palmiotto and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal investigators need broad knowledge of such topics as criminal law, criminal procedure, and investigative techniques. The best resource for these professionals will distill the needed information into one practical volume. Written in an accessible style, the fourth edition of Criminal Investigation maintains the same reader friendly approach that made its predecessors so popular with students, professionals, and practitioners. Beginning with an overview of the history of criminal investigation, the book explores current investigative practices and the legal issues that constrain or guide them. It discusses the wide range of sources of information available, including the internet, individuals, state and local sources, and federal agencies and commissions. Next, the book discusses other investigative techniques, including interviewing and interrogation, informants, surveillance, and undercover operations. A chapter on report writing provides explicit instructions on how to capture the most critical information needed in an investigation. Additional chapters cover the crime scene investigation and the crime laboratory. The remainder of the book delves into the specific investigative protocols for individual crimes, including sex offenses, homicide, mass and serial murder, assault and robbery, property crimes, cybercrime, and narcotics. Concluding chapters focus on the police/prosecutor relationship and investigative trends. Each chapter includes a summary, a list of key terms, and review questions so that readers can test their assimilation of the material. Clear and concise, this book is an essential resource for every criminal investigator’s toolbox.
Download or read book The Meaning of Rehabilitation and its Impact on Parole written by Rita Shah and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book queries the concept of rehabilitation to determine how, on a legislative and policy level, the term is defined as a goal of correctional systems. The book explores what rehabilitation is by investigating how, at different moments in time, its conceptualization has shaped, and been shaped by, shifting norms, practices, and institutions of corrections in California. The author calls for a rethinking of theoretical understandings of the corrections system, generally, and parole system, specifically, and calls for an expansion in the questions asked in reintegration studies. The book is designed for scholars seeking to better understand the relationship between correctional systems and rehabilitation and the full scope of rehabilitation as a legislative goal, and is also suitable for use as teaching tool for historical, textual, and interviewing methods.

Download or read book Organized Crime written by United States. National Advisory Committee on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals. Task Force on Organized Crime and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standards designed for adoption at the state and local levels for the purpose of preventing and reducing organized crime in America are presented in this comprehensive report. The standards recommended in this report were formulated to assist all sectors of the community, as well as the agencies of state and local governments. As a unit, these standards constitute a comprehensive plan for the prevention and control of organized criminal activity in this country. Following the introductory remarks, a brief history of organized criminal activity in the united states, a description of the general characteristics of organized crime, and the results of a study of the various ways state and local governments have dealt with the problem are presented. Part 3 of this report presents standards to guide state and local governments, officials of the criminal justice system, and private citizens in the design and implementation of programs to combat organized criminal operations. These standards are based on successful models operating in the states or on concepts that the task force and the national advisory committee considered necessary for effective prevention and control of organized crime. Proposals for state and local administrative and regulatory agencies to participate in organized crime control programs to the fullest extent of their statutory authority are contained in chapter 4. The standards in chapters 5 through 8 recommend specific policies, law enforcement mechanisms, prosecutorial tools, and legal procedures for adoption by the criminal justice system. The standards in chapter 9 recommend that appropriate training programs in organized crime control be instituted for all levels of the criminal justice system. General educational programs for the private sector are also recommended.

Download or read book Punishing Violence written by Antonia Cretney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common perception that violent crime is on the increase and social surveys record a growing fear of victimisation among the public. Yet not all violence is criminalised, and much criminal violence still goes unreported. Punishing Violence examines the series of decisions - by victims, police officers, prosecutors and courts - which determine whether or not violent behaviour is criminalised. Antonia Cretney and Gwynn Davis examine the relationships underpinning violence, the reasons for violent acts and the factors militating against successful court prosecutions. In doing so, they provide an authoritative account of the reality of assault and identify a serious dislocation between the purposes of victims and the purposes of the justice system in the treatment of violent crime.
