Book The Juggling Act

Download or read book The Juggling Act written by Ralph W. Davis (IV.) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this research was to explore community college counselors' perception of role strain in their positions. Role strain theory explains the difficulties individuals face as they determine which behavior expectations they fulfill in their relationships. It was determined that counselors have important role relationships with students, college administrators and their peers. Through qualitative analysis, this study provided knowledge about community college counselor's perceptions about expectations of their role on campus. The study discovered student and administrator expectations of counselors, and beliefs counselors held regarding their roles based on formal educational and on the job trainings. This research aimed to answer the following questions: (a) How do California community college counselors define their roles in serving their student population? (b) What are California community college counselor's perceptions of student, administrative and professional expectations of the counselor's role? (c) What are the role expectations community college counselors learned from their formal education and on the job training programs? and (d) How do community college counselors perceive any differences in role expectations to affect their ability to provide quality counseling services? To answer these questions, in-depth interviews were utilized to collect qualitative data from community college counselors. The findings resulted from qualitative data analysis of the interview transcripts from study participants. Using thematic coding and analysis the interview data was grouped by codes into recurring themes. This resulted in the identification of four critical themes: (a) counselor preparation; (b) counselor role expectations; (c) counselor experiences with students; and (d) Counselor perceptions of college administrators. The results showed to improve counseling practice, counselors must discover ways to effectively deal with student mental health, and teach students how to navigate the higher education system. Counselors must also learn new ways to meet administrative requests for data based on information they already collect from students. This research be further developed by collecting data from a larger more diverse group of counselors. The data can be enriched by analyzing what Master's programs intend to teach future counselors. Last, collecting data from students is always recommended as the goal is always to improve their success.

Book Standards of Practice for California Community College Counseling Faculty and Programs

Download or read book Standards of Practice for California Community College Counseling Faculty and Programs written by Academic Senate for California Community Colleges and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counseling programs in the California community colleges play a key role in helping students succeed. Over the years, the functions counseling departments perform have increased significantly, further exacerbating the ever-present pressure to serve more students in cost-effective ways. As a result of the expansion of services absent the resources to ensure the provision of such services, the question has arisen as to what roles counseling faculty should play in the delivery of services to students. To clarify these roles, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (Academic Senate) developed a policy paper, "The Role of Counseling Faculty in the California Community Colleges," which was adopted at its Spring 1995 Plenary Session. This paper provides useful background on counseling in the California community colleges. The reader is also referred to a paper adopted by the Academic Senate in 2003, Consultation Council Task Force on Counseling, which provides further discussion of the role of counseling faculty, the importance of counseling faculty in facilitating student success, and information on perceptions of the state of counseling in our system. While "The Role of Counseling Faculty in the California Community Colleges" described the range of activities of counseling faculty, it did not set out standards for how those roles were to be performed. Specific standards for some elements of counseling services have appeared in regulation, accreditation guidelines, and ethics statements; but nowhere had these standards been collected, reviewed, and presented systematically to the community college counseling field until the first version of this paper, "Standards of Practice for California Community College Counseling," was developed and adopted by the Academic Senate in 1997. The original paper and this revision outline effective practices, by addressing the issue of standards of practice and service for California community college counseling faculty and programs. This revision serves as an update, reflecting changes that have transpired in the student services area and incorporating philosophical changes in approaches to counseling. The document has also been renamed to recognize that counseling faculty and counseling programs are separate entities; there are services that a counseling program may provide but that may not be specifically a function of counseling faculty. One appendix is included: American Counseling Association Code of Ethics. [These Standards were adopted Spring 1997; revised and adopted Fall 2008.

Book The Role of Counseling Faculty and Delivery of Counseling Services in the California Community Colleges Adopted Spring 2012

Download or read book The Role of Counseling Faculty and Delivery of Counseling Services in the California Community Colleges Adopted Spring 2012 written by Academic Senate for California Community Colleges and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original paper, "The Role of Counseling Faculty in the California Community Colleges" (1994), provided principled positions of the Academic Senate regarding the essential functions of counselors and the delivery of counseling services in helping students achieve success. The paper concluded with specific guidance on appropriate roles for paraprofessionals, and an appendix addressed the role of faculty advisors. Much of the content from the original paper remains in this version because, nearly 30 years after the 1986 Seymour-Campbell Matriculation Act, it is still compelling and necessary for ensuring quality educational experiences for students and useful for local senates in crafting initiatives to improve student success. Some of the Title 5 regulation language has been removed, as legislation pertaining to matriculation is under revision at this time due to the Board of Governors' 2012 endorsement of the Student Success Task Force Recommendations. Added to the paper is a description of education plans and a section on technology and online counseling, and the sections on paraprofessionals and faculty advisors have been incorporated into the body of the paper rather than included as appendices. Summary recommendations have also been included in this revision. The purposes of this paper are threefold. First, it clarifies the role of the counseling discipline and provides a description of a comprehensive student education plan in the California Community College system. Second, it provides a foundation for discussion of the uses and restrictions of paraprofessionals in the delivery of counseling services. Third, it offers updates on minimum qualifications, the use of faculty advisors, and current trends in technological tools and online counseling, as well as a chronology of funding patterns and legislative activity to date, that provide a more wide-ranging perspective of how the profession of counseling has evolved-or not-since 1994. Sample education plans are appended.

Book Career Development Is Where It s At

Download or read book Career Development Is Where It s At written by Maria Jesse Chaidez (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The California Community College System is an entry point for the majority of first-generation college students. This case study of a community college in Southern California examined the experiences and motivations of both Latinx students in their major/career decision-making process and the community college counseling faculty who serve, educate and guide them on a daily basis. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 first-generation Latinx students, as well as 10 counseling faculty at the same community college. Three themes emerged from this study: (1) perceptions of the career decision-making process, (2) tenacity despite institutional challenges, and (3) first-generation faculty serving first-generation students. Students shared a variety of motivations in their decision-making, and the findings indicate that both students and the counseling faculty agree that counseling career exploration courses are impactful and should be required for all new students. However, several institutional barriers prevent this from being a reality. Recommendations include suggestions for funding, hiring, the creation of internship programs, and that college campuses establish first-generation ally training for faculty.

Book A Study of Factors that Contribute to Job Satisfaction and Role Congruence for Community College Counselors

Download or read book A Study of Factors that Contribute to Job Satisfaction and Role Congruence for Community College Counselors written by Kenneth M. Coll and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to: 1) determine the relationship between community college counselor role congruence and job satisfaction and 2) to consider factors that contribute to or depreciate counselor role congruence and job satisfaction. The subjects consisted of four groups that were compared in terms of their perceptions of community college counseling. One group called leaders consisted of Oregon community college presidents and deans of students. Another group called co- workers was made up of Oregon community college financial aid directors, registrars and/or admissions directors, student activities directors and career placement directors. A third group called trainers consisted of counselor trainers/ educators from Oregon and the Western United States. Oregon community college counselors comprised the fourth group. Questionnaires were sent to 277 individuals and 190 responded for a 69 percent return ratio. Eighty-five percent (85%) of the counselors, 65 percent of the co-workers, 61 percent of the leaders, and 61 percent of the trainers responded. Three instruments were used in this study. The Role Questionnaire was used to measure role congruence and was administered to all subjects. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire was used to measure job satisfaction and was administered to the counselor group. The Community College Counselor Questionnaire was developed to gather demographic and job duties information and was administered to all groups. Counselor role congruence and job satisfaction were positively correlated at +.54. A one way analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among groups. Trainers and co-workers perceived significantly greater counselor role incongruence than did counselors and leaders. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that experience in the counseling profession, positive perception of leadership decision making, a full-time faculty/staff development specialist on campus, a professional definition as an educator/counselor, and a peer counseling program were all associated with high counselor role congruence. Stepwise regression analysis also revealed that a light counselor teaching load, having at least a masters degree, and perception of few incompatible demands were all associated with high counselor job satisfaction.

Book A Delphi Study of California Community College Counselors Responsibilities and Competencies for the 1990 s as Perceived by Chief Student Services Administrators

Download or read book A Delphi Study of California Community College Counselors Responsibilities and Competencies for the 1990 s as Perceived by Chief Student Services Administrators written by Noelia Vela and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's demographic changes and recent legislative reform mandates will impact what community college counselors will be expected to do in the 1990's. The purpose of this study was to identify the responsibilities and competencies of California community college counselors in light of the changes. The Delphi Method, selected for its consensus-building and forecasting qualities, was used for this study. A panel of 23 chief student services administrators, identified as experts in student services and counseling, completed three rounds of surveys. The Delphi instruments were developed to address counselor responsibilities and associated competencies for the 1990's, staff development needs of currently employed counselors and professional preparation needs of prospective counselors to effectively meet the challenges of the 1990's. Some of the major findings and conclusions of the study were: (1) Counselors' responsibilities and associated competencies for the 1990's will address the specific needs of the "new" student populations including older adults, limited English speakers and underprepared students. (2) Counselors will be more involved in process-oriented counseling activities and less involved in information dissemination activities. (3) Counselors will be more involved in "indirect" student service activities such as program development and evaluation, student retention activities and institutional policy development. (4) Key staff development needs relate to the key community college issues of cultural and language diversity, adult development, learning styles, affirmative action and traditional counseling topics. (5) Five crucial professional preparation topics for prospective community college counselors include: Community College Mission and Philosophy, Cultures in American Society, Community College Counseling Practicum, Adult Development Theory and Learning Theory. Major recommendations include using the information from this study as a basis for: (1) discussion between chief student services administrators and counselors about local counseling services; (2) planning counseling services, staff development programs, job descriptions and new hires; and (3) as a basis for the California Community College Chief Student Services Administrators' Association to develop and forward recommendations to the field and to community college counselor educators. Finally, a local assessment of the issues addressed in this study could be conducted to better address students' needs in the 1990's.
