Download or read book The Students We Share written by Patricia Gándara and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of students in the US and Mexico begin their educations in one country and find themselves trying to integrate into the school system of the other. As global migration increases, their numbers are expected to grow and more and more teachers will find these transnational students in their classrooms. The goal of The Students We Share is to prepare educators for this present and future reality. While the US has been developing English as a Second Language programs for decades, Mexican schools do not offer such programs in Spanish and neither the US nor Mexico has prepared its teachers to address the educational, social-psychological, or other personal needs of transnational students. Teachers know little about the circumstances of transnational students' lives or histories and have little to no knowledge of the school systems of the country from which they or their family come. As such, they are fundamentally unprepared to equitably educate the "students we share," who often fall through the cracks and end their educations prematurely. Written by both Mexican and US pioneers in the field, chapters in this volume aim to prepare educators on both sides of the US-Mexico border to better understand the circumstances, strengths, and needs of the transnational students we teach. With recommendations for policymakers, administrators, teacher educators, teachers, and researchers in both countries, The Students We Share shows how preparing teachers is our shared responsibility and opportunity. It describes policies, classroom practices, and norms of both systems, as well as examples of ongoing partnerships across borders to prepare the teachers we need for our shared students to thrive.

Book excerpt: For well over a half century, American Universities and Colleges has been the most comprehensive and highly respected directory of four-year institutions of higher education in the United States. A two-volume set that Choice magazine hailed as a most important resource in its November 2006 issue, this revised edition features the most up-to-date statistical data available to guide students in making a smart yet practical decision in choosing the university or college of their dreams. In addition, the set serves as an indispensable reference source for parents, college advisors, educators, and public, academic, and high school librarians. These two volumes provide extensive information on 1,900 institutions of higher education, including all accredited colleges and universities that offer at least the baccalaureate degree. This essential resource offers pertinent, statistical data on such topics as tuition, room and board; admission requirements; financial aid; enrollments; student life; library holdings; accelerated and study abroad programs; departments and teaching staff; buildings and grounds; and degrees conferred. Volume two of the set provides four indexes, including an institutional Index, a subject accreditation index, a levels of degrees offered index, and a tabular index of summary data by state. These helpful indexes allow readers to find information easily and to make comparisons among institutions effectively. Also contained within the text are charts and tables that provide easy access to comparative data on relevant topics.

Download or read book Many Mexicos written by Lesley Byrd Simpson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no country's history is as fascinating and perplexing as that of Mexico. "Mother Mexico," land of paradox, of contradiction and extreme--these are the strands that Lesley Byrd Simpson weaves into a unified fabric in presenting the country's history. First published in 1941, Many Mexicos was awarded the Commonwealth Club Gold Medal for Literature. Travelers, students, and all who delight in the adventure of narrative history have since treasured the volume for its clarity and readability. Now, completely revised, the Silver Anniversary Edition reflects the vast published output of these past twenty-five years on the history of Mexico. Some chapters have been enlarged, others corrected. A map of Mexico showing political subdivisions is now included, and, in general, new material has been added to document the author's controversial statement (and there are many). Bloody conquests and revolutions; men, good or evil; art, religion, and institutions brought from Spain or made in Mexico; topography and climate; the conflict of cultures and races; and finally, the emergence of Mexico into today's bewildering world--this in broad outline is the absorbing story Mr. Simpson so warmly presents.

Download or read book Assault on Mexican American Collective Memory 2010 2015 written by Rodolfo F. Acuña and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a micro-narrative structure to explore the assault on the collective memory of Mexican Americans in the Southwest United States from 2010–2016. These communities’ survival depends on their histories and identities, which are being quickly erased by gentrification and dispersal, neoliberalism and privatization. This issue is most apparent in the education system, where Mexican American students receive inferior educations and lack access to higher education. Avoiding the overly-theoretical macro-narrative, this book uses case studies and micro-narratives to suggest possible changes and actions to address this issue. It also explores how the erasure of Mexican Americans’ history and identity mirrors society as a whole.
