Book excerpt: La contaminación es, desde el punto de vista ecológico, uno de los tres grandes problemas ambientales que afectan a nuestro planeta, y ésta, surge por la presencia cuantitativa o cualitativa de materia o energía que produce un desequilibrio ambiental. La contaminación se manifiesta en cualquier ambiente o medio y se expresa en distintas formas con relaciones muy complejas, sin embargo, la forma más simple de describirla es en función del medio afectado como el aire, el agua y el suelo. Tradicionalmente se ha dividido el medio ambiente para el estudio e interpretación de la contaminación en los componentes aire, agua y suelo; sin embargo esta división es meramente teórica ya que la mayoría de los contaminantes interactúan con más de uno de los medios físicos ambientales. No obstante, que cada uno de los tres medios físicos mencionados tiene la misma importancia, es el aire el que primeramente resiente, la gran cantidad de substancias gaseosas, líquidas y sólidas vertidas en él. Por otra parte, es el ser humano y las comunidades biológicas en general quienes resienten, en primera instancia, los efectos de la contaminación del aire. Con el propósito de prevenir, medir y atenuar la contaminación en el aire, se ha desarrollado un gran número de estrategias que forman parte de las prioridades en las políticas de desarrollo de las grandes ciudades. Entre las estrategias que recientemente han incrementado su aplicación se encuentran diversos métodos de monitoreo que incluyen el uso de organismos vivos como indicadores biológicos del grado de contaminación. Los bioindicadores son organismos vivos que responden de una forma clara y precisa a los cambios en el ambiente. También, es posible describirlos como todas aquellas medidas o mediciones de la salud de un organismo que resultan al responder a los factores ambientales adversos (tensores) en las cuales se incluyen distintos niveles de organización biológica y distintas escalas de tiempo. Debido a que los organismos están sujetos a una gran variedad de factores ambientales tensionantes es necesario desarrollar múltiples medidas de la condición de salud, con el propósito de apoyar la identificación y la separación de los efectos que son inducidos por los seres humanos, por ejemplo contaminantes, de aquellos que son naturales, como la disponibilidad de habitat y de alimento. Cuando los factores de tensión o disturbio de las comunidades biológicas son agentes contaminantes es común utilizar como característica primordial de los indicadores, la condición fisiológica de los organismos. Es por ello que la presente investigación tiene el propósito de demostrar la relación que existe entre la concentración de contaminantes atmosféricos, especialmente metales pesados, con la presencia y la salud de los Liqúenes en el poniente del área metropolitana de Monterrey, específicamente en el corredor vial Monterrey - Saltillo.

They are cultivated in more than 135 countries, across the tropics and subtropics, with an annual global production of ca. 130 million metric tonnes. Though bananas are one of the most important components of food security in many developing countries, banana production is threatened by both abiotic and biotic stresses. These include a wide range of diseases and pests, such as bunchy top virus, burrowing nematodes, black Sigatoka or black leaf streak, Fusarium wilt, etc. In recent years, considerable progress has been made and several biotechnological and genomic tools have been employed to help understand and unravel the mysterious banana genome. Molecular and genomic studies have helped to decipher the Musa genome and its evolution. Genetic linkage map and whole genome sequencing of both Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana (progenitors of cultivated banana) have completely changed the way of thinking and the approach on banana crop improvement. Whole-genome sequencing has helped to improve the selection of quantitative traits such as yield, as well as the selection of optimal parents for developing required hybrids in breeding programs. Gene isolation and the analysis of mutants have helped in the characterization of genes of agronomic value and the associated regulatory sequences. With the advent of molecular markers and new statistical tools, it is now possible to measure the diversity, identify genes and useful alleles linked to important agronomic traits. Further these alleles can be incorporated into cultivars through marker assisted selection or through transgenic approach. Transgenic approaches are potential tools for direct transfer of these genes into popular cultivars, which are generally not amenable for conventional breeding techniques, in specific with crops such as bananas which are sterile, triploid and heterozygous thereby making it difficult to reconstruct the recurrent genotypes in banana. Transgenic techniques thus have helped overcome the difficulty of working with sterile, triploid banana crop. In the last five years, enormous amount of new information and techniques have been generated for banana. A comprehensive book entitled “Banana: Genomics and Transgenic Approaches for Genetic improvement” on banana genomics, latest transgenic technologies and tools available for improved crop development in banana will address all these requirements.
