Book excerpt: This report lists the final, best estimate of the target polarization P[sub T] as a function of time for all of the periods during which scattering data were (or may have been) collected. The information under RUN'' refers to [Delta][sigma][sub L]-runs. The notation sfs'' stands for start of frozen spin, '' efs'' for end of frozen spin, '' [yields] la'' for go to large-aperture'' target magnet position, and nla'' for not large-aperture'' position, i.e., the target magnet is in polarizing'' position. Where the NOTE'' column is blank it means that all standard frozen-spin conditions were in effect: the target temperature was reduced and the magnet was in large-aperture position. The timing marks were developed on the basis of three criteria: (1) the availability of direct NMR data, (2) the inclusion of major Target and Run boundaries, and (3) the arbitrary inclusion of enough minor'' Run boundaries to shorten large timing gaps. The sign of the P[sub T]-values is given in the NMR convention: (+) corresponds to predominant occupation of the Zeeman ground state (the thermal'' NMR-signals are considered positive). Since the target magnet field pointed upstream, (+) corresponds to target spin antiparallel to the beam momentum. The estimated uncertainty on P[sub T] is [plus minus]6.5% (2[sigma]), and the estimated uncertainty on the ratio of values for the two signs of polarization, P[sub T](+)/PT([minus]), is [plus minus]4.3% (2[sigma]).

Book Introduction to Polarization Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Polarization Physics written by Sandibek B. Nurushev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-28 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the polarization (spin) physics of high energy particles and contains three parts. The first part presents the theoretical prefaces of polarization in the particle physics for interpretations, predictions and bases for understanding the following two parts. The second part of the book presents the description of the essential polarization experiments including the recent ones. This part is devoted to the innovative instrumentations, gives the parameters of the polarized beams, targets, polarized gas jets and polarimeters. The third part of the book concentrates on the important achievements in polarization physics. The book can be used in lectures on nuclear and particle physics and and nuclear instruments and methods. As supplementary reading this book is useful for researchers working in particle and nuclear physics.

This book was released on 1997-04-15 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments using highly polarized intense beams and targets, and theoretical studies of spin and polarization phenomena, are now providing us with numerous additional details of the electroweak and strong interactions and the structure of matter. The spin structure of the nucleon has been measured over wide ranges of kinematic variables, and the cross sections have been calculated to several orders in perturbative field theory. At present, the influence of the higher twist contributions, the gluon spin, and the quark orbital angular momentum are under scrutiny. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) captures a lot of our experimental knowledge of hard polarized scattering processes. Can our understanding of such processes within QCD be further improved?Hyperons produced in high energy reactions show how puzzling strong interactions between hadrons still are. Spin observables in experiments at intermediate energy are used to test parity and charge symmetries. Will they also reveal, at low energy, a violation of time reversal symmetry? We are on the verge of using parity violation measurements at intermediate electron scattering energies to determine the amount of strange quark contributions to the neutral weak form factor of the nucleon. The polarization of the sea quarks is expected to be measured soon in W± decays produced in high energy polarized proton interactions. Will the jets in polarized Z⁰ decays show a definite handedness? These and many other topics are discussed in these proceedings.

Book excerpt: This note is mainly about the offline corrections for the target polarization measurements of E-960. For the sake of minimizing the number of separate documents, I have also included my recent thoughts about the target constant, in Sec. 6. The E-960 data-taking was done in two separate runs. With respect to having an operative NMR system, the runs dated from 27-AUG-87 to 10-DEC-87 and from 14-AUG-88 to 6-OCT-88. These runs will be referred to as the ''1987'' and ''1988'' runs, respectively. Because of the press of intervening projects, I have been unable until now to give my attention to the 1988 run of E-960. The information developed below in Secs. 3--5 is the result of my (belated) attempt to do so. A draft memo dated January 4, 1988 was previously distributed, which concerned the polarization correction factors for the 1987 run. I have reproduced the material from that memo in Sec. 2, for the sake of completeness. Also, since the analysis of the 1988 run has raised some questions about the appropriateness of the older analysis, I have augmented the material from that memo with some of the background observations and calculations that underlay its conclusions, to facilitate a comparison of the two runs. In Sec. 4 I have made a final synthesis of the observations made during the two runs, and it is there that one wig find my best estimate of the offline polarization corrections for both runs.

Book Polarized Target Experiment at Fermilab Polarization 100 GeV

Download or read book Polarized Target Experiment at Fermilab Polarization 100 GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary results are given for polarization measurements for .pi.p and .pi.−p elastic scattering at 100 GeV. Results are not yet given for pp scattering also studied. It is noted that strictly speaking it is the asymmetry in the scattering off polarized protons that is measured. One relies on time-reversal invariance when this asymmetry is termed polarization. The values of the polarization are everywhere very small at this energy. These results appear to show no significant deviations from the predictions based on Regge theory and polarization measurements at lower beam energies. 2 references. (JFP).
