The present volume comprehends half of the period of the Interregnum; the other half will, it is expected, occupy another volume of about the same size, while probably a fourth and fifth will comprehend the papers from the Rest-oration to the time of Clarendon's exile. In the Introduction to the first volume some notice of the growth of the whole collection and of the way in which it came into the possession of the University of Oxford, will more properly find a place than here. At present, it is sufficient to mention only a few points which more immediately concern the contents of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of the Clarendon State Papers Preserved in the Bodleian Library, Vol. 5: 1660-1726; With Index to Volumes IV and V Among the Downing papers are many manuscripts which are not strictly Clarendon papers and these have only been sum marily noted unless of special importance.2 They include detailed reports and copies of documents dealing with affairs of the Orange principality and with the tutorship of the young prince, but since a number of them carry Clarendon's endorse ment, they evidently passed through his hands. Downing, after he went to The Hague, took over this affair among other matters affecting Charles ii's relations with the States General and so it came to be more directly Clarendon's responsibility. More re markable, however, are the many copies and translations from the Dutch archives: letters from ambassadors, from De Witt and Dutch ofi'icials, secret resolutions of the States General, proceedings of the provincial estates, extracts from their registers, &c., which Downing obtained by adroit bribery. He complained bitterly to Clarendon on many occasions that for this indispensable service he needed more money.
