Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, of the Reign of Charles I., 1633-1634: Preserved in Her Majesty's Public Record Office There is something extremely tantalising to the editor of such a work as the present, in the slowness of his advance. Thirteen months, extending from April 1633 to April 1634 (both Aprils being included), with the addition of about 250 undated papers, are all that we have been able to comprise within the present volume. Shortly after the publication Of this Calendar was commenced a large number Of Admiralty Papers, which had previously formed a separate collection, were incorporated with the main series of the Domestic Papers. The incorporation was clearly right, but it nearly doubled the mass Of the whole; and during the period now under treatment, which may be described as introductory to the ship-money period, and also during the immediately subsequent period of the ship-money, the number Of the Admiralty papers is very great. Their value is Obvious. They constitute a series Of materials for the naval history of England during a most important period, and among them, if anywhere, are to be found the facts upon which the vindication of the imposition of ship-money must mainly rest. The number of these papers and the space they occupy in the Calendar, are not therefore to be viewed with regret.
