Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the not too distant past, along the Mississippi River, North America tried to tear itself in half. It failed. It won't the second time. New Madrid. A standalone disaster thriller from international bestselling author, Bobby Akart, one of America's favorite storytellers, who has delivered up-all-night thrillers to readers in 245 countries and territories worldwide. "Akart is a master of suspense, keeping us on the edge of our seats. But, he does it with fact-based fiction that would scare even the most hardened readers." Two hundred years ago, several faults within the New Madrid seismic zone along the Mississippi River ruptured triggering some of the largest earthquakes in American history. The three massive quakes ripped open America's Heartland, shaking residents as far away as New York City and Washington, DC while ringing church bells in Boston and Charleston, South Carolina. "No one can research like Bobby Akart and then turn this meticulous research into one exciting thrill ride." Akart's standalone novel, New Madrid, is based on actual events. It just hasn't happened yet, until now. 200 years later after the historic quake sequence of 1811-12, it's reawakened. "This is a story of fortitude and love for family - do you have what it takes to survive and make it back to your loved ones." The New Madrid fault zone, six times larger than the San Andreas in California, has generated a series of massive earthquakes thrusting the Atwood and Chandler families in a fight to survive. Attorney Jack Atwood and his brother-in-law Tony Chandler are winding up their year-end tax planning presentation atop The Met, a skyscraper in St. Louis, before returning to Memphis for their family's Christmas celebration. Jill Atwood, her daughter Emily and teenage son Tate, are in a downtown Memphis performing arts theater attending the dress rehearsal for Emily's Christmas pageant. Beth Chandler, 28 weeks pregnant, together with her 3-year old autistic son, are traveling from Louisiana to join the rest of the family in Memphis. Will they arrive for Christmas? Will they arrive at all? Their lives are about to change forever. "You are there. Feeling what they feel. Anger, joy, love, mourning. You feel it all. Not everyone can write a book like this. It takes a special writer to make you feel a book." Bobby Akart has delivered intense, up-all-night thrillers causing you to whisper just one more chapter until the end.

Book Saving Yellowstone

Download or read book Saving Yellowstone written by Megan Kate Nelson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From historian and critically acclaimed author of The Three-Cornered War comes the captivating story of how Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in the years after the Civil War, offering “a fresh, provocative study…departing from well-trodden narratives about conservation and public recreation” (Booklist, starred review). Each year nearly four million people visit Yellowstone National Park—one of the most popular of all national parks—but few know the fascinating and complex historical context in which it was established. In late July 1871, the geologist-explorer Ferdinand Hayden led a team of scientists through a narrow canyon into Yellowstone Basin, entering one of the last unmapped places in the country. The survey’s discoveries led to the passage of the Yellowstone Act in 1872, which created the first national park in the world. Now, author Megan Kate Nelson examines the larger context of this American moment, illuminating Hayden’s survey as a national project meant to give Americans a sense of achievement and unity in the wake of a destructive civil war. Saving Yellowstone follows Hayden and two other protagonists in pursuit of their own agendas: Sitting Bull, a Lakota leader who asserted his peoples’ claim to their homelands, and financier Jay Cooke, who wanted to secure his national reputation by building the Northern Pacific Railroad through the Great Northwest. Hayden, Cooke, and Sitting Bull staked their claims to Yellowstone at a critical moment in Reconstruction, when the Ulysses S. Grant Administration and the 42nd Congress were testing the reach and the purpose of federal power across the nation. “A readable and unfailingly interesting look at a slice of Western history from a novel point of view” (Kirkus Reviews), Saving Yellowstone reveals how Yellowstone became both a subject of fascination and a metaphor for the nation during the Reconstruction era. This “land of wonders” was both beautiful and terrible, fragile and powerful. And what lay beneath the surface there was always threatening to explode.

Book Gravity Drive 3 The Scattering

Download or read book Gravity Drive 3 The Scattering written by Paul Howard Rosenfeld and published by Gravity Drive Books. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Gravity Drive: “I started reading Gravity Drive - Key to the Cosmos after dinner, figuring I'd get a couple chapters into it just to see how it started...and couldn't put it down. I read the whole thing straight through. Well done! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. I loved the aliens.” Jerry Oltion - Nebula Award winning author of over 15 novels and 150 published stories, including numerous Authorized Star Trek novels. Author's comments: If you’re reading this, then hopefully you’ve already read the first two books in the Gravity Drive trilogy. Thank you for returning for Book 3. If you haven’t read the first two then please understand that Gravity Drive 3 - The Scattering was not written as a stand alone novel. It’s the conclusion to the story of a long and difficult path humanity must travel if it wishes to survive for all eternity in the cosmos. It’s the story behind the creation of a revolutionary new deep space propulsion system and the vast impact it has not only on the space program but on humanity and all life on Earth. Warning: Spoiler Alert. Unless you really enjoy spoilers, I suggest you just read the book and let the adventure take over. As I’ve already implied, this third book picks up right were we left off at the end of Gravity Drive 2 - Jason’s Ark. There should be a lot of snoring on The Ark, and the smell should be something awful, but everyone is in deep deep sleep. So all’s well. Wish I could say the same for Mother Earth. The Universe just isn’t quite done with her yet, and it’s not looking promising. It’s looking pretty nice on Mars though. Maybe time for a vacation there? Or maybe Earth’s Moon? Don’t forget about our buddies Al and Taka, floating out there all alone in the darkness of space with just their old music and a sarcastic computer to keep them company. These two are just destined to get into trouble, but see some really cool things along the way (think: what’s your favorite all time life form?). I guarantee it. Anyway, it’s about time for humanity to start doing some serious space exploration and maybe make some new friends out there, or at least see some really cool sights and interesting life forms. Oh, you’re going to love some of our new friends and I’m pretty sure my fans will be writing to tell me how one of them definitely kept them up at night. So for those people I say, you’re going to enjoy spending some serious time with your old friends the Paxians again. If only everyone was as quietly brilliant, kind and easy going as these guys. Can you tell that I’m trying really hard to give you an idea of what might happen without spoiling all the fun surprises waiting for you? So let me just say, you’re really going to love how the story wraps up, and it might even surprise you. Thanks for coming back for the finale of the Gravity Drive Trilogy. Paul
