Book Doing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Mathematics

Download or read book Doing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Mathematics written by Jacqueline M. Dewar and published by The Mathematical Association of America. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) movement encourages faculty to view teaching “problems” as invitations to conduct scholarly investigations. In this growing field of inquiry faculty bring their disciplinary knowledge and teaching experience to bear on questions of teaching and learning. They systematically gather evidence to develop and support their conclusions. The results are to be peer reviewed and made public for others to build on. This Notes volume is written expressly for collegiate mathematics faculty who want to know more about conducting scholarly investigations into their teaching and their students’ learning. Envisioned and edited by two mathematics faculty, the volume serves as a how-to guide for doing SoTL in mathematics.

Book A Course of Pure Mathematics and Calculus

Download or read book A Course of Pure Mathematics and Calculus written by James Zimmerhoff and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-29 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was intended to improve mathematics teaching in the UK, but more specifically at the University of Cambridge and in schools teaching higher mathematics. Directed at "scholarship level" students - the top 10% to 20% by excellence. Hardy himself did not first find a passion for math, only regarding it as a way to beat other students, and gain scholarships. However, this book excels in adequately explaining analytical number theory and calculus following the rigor of mathematics.

Book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning

Download or read book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning written by Wendy M. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to help launch institutional transformations in mathematics departments to improve student success. We report findings from the Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning (SEMINAL) study. SEMINAL's purpose is to help change agents, those looking to (or currently attempting to) enact change within mathematics departments and beyond—trying to reform the instruction of their lower division mathematics courses in order to promote high achievement for all students. SEMINAL specifically studies the change mechanisms that allow postsecondary institutions to incorporate and sustain active learning in Precalculus to Calculus 2 learning environments. Out of the approximately 2.5 million students enrolled in collegiate mathematics courses each year, over 90% are enrolled in Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses. Forty-four percent of mathematics departments think active learning mathematics strategies are important for Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses, but only 15 percnt state that they are very successful at implementing them. Therefore, insights into the following research question will help with institutional transformations: What conditions, strategies, interventions and actions at the departmental and classroom levels contribute to the initiation, implementation, and institutional sustainability of active learning in the undergraduate calculus sequence (Precalculus to Calculus 2) across varied institutions?

Book An Analytical Calculus Volume 1

Download or read book An Analytical Calculus Volume 1 written by E. A. Maxwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a series of four volumes covering all stages of development of the Calculus, from the last year at school to degree standard. The books are written for students of science and engineering as well as for specialist mathematicians, and are designed to bridge the gap between the works used in schools and more advanced studies, with their emphasis on rigour. This volume is concerned with the basic ideas and applications of differentiation and integration in relation to algebraic and trigonometric functions, but excluding logarithmic and exponential functions. Integration begins on the 'Riemann integral' basis, and the treatment of curves combines accuracy with simplicity, without shirking the awkward problems of sign. Each section has examples; at the end of each chapter there are problems from school-leaving and open scholarship examinations.
