Book Calculation of Vortex Lift Effect for Cambered Wings by the Suction Analogy

Download or read book Calculation of Vortex Lift Effect for Cambered Wings by the Suction Analogy written by Chaun-Pau Edward Lan and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An improved version of Woodward's chord plane aerodynamic panel method for subsonic and supersonic flow is developed for cambered wings exhibiting edge separated vortex flow, including those with leading edge vortex flaps. The exact relation between leading edge thrust and suction force in potential flow is derived. Instead of assuming the rotated suction force to be normal to wing surface at the leading edge, new orientation for the rotated suction force is determined through consideration of the momentum principle. The supersonic suction analogy method is improved by using an effective angle of attack defined through a semi-empirical method. Comparisons of predicted results with available data in subsonic and supersonic flow are presented.

Book Application of the Leading edge suction Analogy to Prediction of Longitudinal Load Distribution and Pitching Moments for Sharp edged Delta Wings

Download or read book Application of the Leading edge suction Analogy to Prediction of Longitudinal Load Distribution and Pitching Moments for Sharp edged Delta Wings written by Melvin H. Snyder and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading-edge-suction analogy of Polhamus has been used to develop the longitudinal load distribution of the vortex lift for delta wings. This distribution is shown to be similar in shape to that of the potential-flow longitudinal loading for delta wings having aspect ratios of 2 or less. The totals of the two theoretical distributions for delta wings with an aspect ratio near 1 are in good agreement with the experimentally determined loadings over the angle-of-attack range from 0 to 30 deg. The corresponding predicted pitching moments show slightly more stability than those measured, because of loss of lift near the wing tips.

Book Calculation of High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics of Fighter Configurations

Download or read book Calculation of High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics of Fighter Configurations written by Chuan-Tau Edward Lan and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational method for lateral-directional aerodynamics of fighter configurations is developed. The leading-edge vortices are represented by free vortex filaments which are adjusted iteratively to satisfy the force- free condition. The forebody vortex separation, both symmetrical and asymmetrical, is calculated using slender body theory. Effect of boundary layer separation on lifting surfaces is accounted for using the effective sectional angels of attack. The latter are obtained iteratively by matching the nonlinear sectional lift with the computed resulted based on lifting-surface theory. Results for several fighter configurations are employed for comparison with available data. It is shown that the present method produces reasonable results in predicting sideslip derivatives, while roll- and yaw-rate derivatives do not compare very well with forced oscillation test data at high angles of attack. Industrial usage of this has produced mixed results. At this time, the use of these methods in a production manner is not recommended.
