Book Calculation of Vertical Airblast Induced Ground Motions from Nuclear Explosions in Frenchman Flat

Download or read book Calculation of Vertical Airblast Induced Ground Motions from Nuclear Explosions in Frenchman Flat written by Henry F Cooper (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses vertical airblast-induced ground motions produced by nuclear explosions over a dry soil medium taken to model Frenchman Flat of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Material properties for use in first principle calculations were synthesized from very limited dynamic laboratory stress-strain data, various soil index characteristics, and seismic data. Parametric calculations with a one-dimensional, plane-strain finite difference code were used to define a theoretical simplified model that expresses peak vertical particle velocities and displacements as a function of yield, peak overpressure and depth. Ground motions predicted by this model were then compared to ground motion data from nuclear explosions in Frenchman Flat. In particular, predictions of the simplified model were reasonably consistent with PRISCILLA data which were a primary basis of empirical prediction procedures widely used in the design and analysis of strategic structures during the past ten years. The theoretical model could be altered (where little or no dynamic soil property data exist) to provide even better agreement between calculated and measured ground motions. Conversely, study of qualitative features of the theoretical results provide insight into the basic wave propagation phenomena in Frenchman Flat that could improve the interpretation of the experimental data such that a more consistent comparison between theory and experiment may result. Book Effect of Constitutive Properties of Earth Media on Outrunning Ground Shock from Large Explosions

Download or read book Effect of Constitutive Properties of Earth Media on Outrunning Ground Shock from Large Explosions written by Paul F. Hadala and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outrunning ground shock data from the 100- to 10-psi overpressure decade in six large surface high explosive (HE) tests, three from a rock site and three from a glaciated soil site, were analyzed for the effect of gross changes in constitutive properties. Axisymmetric wave propagation code calculations in layered linear and nonlinear (incrementally elastic-plastic) media were performed to determine the effects of introducing nonlinearity, selected material property variations, and the relative importance of airblast and direct induced effects from surface explosions in the overpressure decade of interest.

Book Ground Shock Calculation Parameter Study

Download or read book Ground Shock Calculation Parameter Study written by George Y. Baladi and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is the third in a series, 'Ground Shock Calculation Parameter Study, ' centered on the Prairie Flat Event. The first report describes the effect of different elastic-ideally plastic constitutive model formulations on calculated ground shock, while the second report describes the effect of different bottom boundary conditions. The report documents the results of a parameter study conducted to determine the effects of using different types of nonlinear constitutive models to fit a given set of soil property data in calculations of high-explosive, airblast-induced, superseismic ground shock. Book Simulation Analysis of Low Frequency Ground Motions Observed from Selected Atmospheric Nuclear Explosions at the Nevada Test Site

Download or read book Simulation Analysis of Low Frequency Ground Motions Observed from Selected Atmospheric Nuclear Explosions at the Nevada Test Site written by John R. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a continuing investigation of the characteristics of the low frequency ground motions produced by atmospheric explosions. The studies reported here have focused on two aspects of this problem: (1) the full-scale validation of nuclear tests, and (2) the preliminary evaluation of a theoretically-based prediction methodology. With regard to the validation study, the mathematical model has been applied to the theoretical simulation of ground motion data recorded from the Nevada Test Site atmospheric nuclear explosions TUMBLER I, UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE 10 and SMALL BOY. The results of these simulations have confirmed the fact that the observed low frequency ground motions from such explosions can be accounted for by the airblast-induced, elastic surface waves. Moreover, the simulation analysis of the ground motion data recorded from the near-surface SMALL BOY explosion has confirmed the existence of an 'exclusion radius' for such events, within which incident airblast energy is not efficiently coupled into the surface wave mode of propagation due to dissipation associated with strong, nonlinear interaction effects. On the other hand, the evidence provided by the TUMBLER I and UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE 10 analyses has indicated that this exclusion radius is effectively zero for explosions with significant height of burst.

Book Free field Code Predictions Versus Field Measurements

Download or read book Free field Code Predictions Versus Field Measurements written by Joseph Simon Zelasko and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report documents the results of an airblast-induced ground-shock calculation performed at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) for the Operation Prairie Flat 500-ton high-explosive (HE) event. A WES-modified version of the 2D axisymmetric LAYER Code developed by the Paul Weidlinger firm was used for the investigation. Each layer of the soil profile was mathematically modeled with a nonlinear elastic-plastic-compacting type constitutive model that provided good fits to the available material property test data. Field airblast measurements were used to develop an airblast routine suitable for code input. The code results, carried to 300 msec of real time, showed good quantitative and qualitative agreement with the field ground-motion measurements in regions outside the crater zone. The calculations reported herein represent initial efforts at WES to conduct comprehensive parametric studies of the effectiveness of contemporary mathematical constitutive models in predicting airblast-induced ground motions for several high-explosive field tests. The overall research program includes study of the influences of computational details such as boundary conditions, grid size, and time step and comparative analyses of the calculated ground motions and those recorded during the field test events. Book Simulation of Air blast induced Ground Motion Phase i

Download or read book Simulation of Air blast induced Ground Motion Phase i written by Harry E. Auld and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental program was performed to determine the most promising techniques for simulating the air-blast-induced ground motions from a largeyield nuclear weapon. Two techniques were then selected for further development. One of the selected techniques employs a detonable gas mixture and the other a primacord matrix to generate a traveling shock wave which loads the ground. The nuclear air-blast overpressure environment is described and the simulation produced by either scheme is compared with this environment. The primacord technique was then selected because it was found to be the most practical and economical. Sufficient data are presented to enable the design of simulation experiments which use either technique. (Author).

Book A Summary of Some Analytical Studies on Airblast Induced Ground Motions

Download or read book A Summary of Some Analytical Studies on Airblast Induced Ground Motions written by Melvin L. Baron and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current requirements for predicting ground shock effects in the relatively high pressure regions of nuclear explosions have necessitated the development of suitable mathematical models for the geological materials which make up the media. The use of these more complicated models in the study of ground shock effects have necessitated the development of a group of analytical and semi-analytical check solutions for the various materials of interest. This paper presents a summary of a group of such solutions, together with a bibliography. The solutions, while of interest in themselves, have been extensively used as check solutions for the various large computer codes which have been developed for the study of ground shock effects from nuclear and high explosive sources.
