Book Turbulent Skin Friction at High Mach Numbers and Reynolds Numbers in Air and Helium

Download or read book Turbulent Skin Friction at High Mach Numbers and Reynolds Numbers in Air and Helium written by Fred W. Matting and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are given of local skin-friction measurements in turbulent boundary layers over an equivalent air Mach number range from 0.2 to 9.9 and an over-all Reynolds number variation of 2x106 to 100x106. Direct force measurements were made by means of a floating element. Flows were two-dimensional over a smooth flat surface with essentially zero pressure gradient and with adiabatic conditions at the wall. Air and helium were used as working fluids. An equivalence parameter for comparing boundary layers in different working fluids is derived and the experimental verification of the parameter is demonstrated. Experimental results are compared with the resuls obtained by several methods of calculating skin friction in the turbulent boundary layer.

Book Approximate Formulas for the Computation of Turbulent Boundary layer Momentum Thicknesses in Compressible Flows

Download or read book Approximate Formulas for the Computation of Turbulent Boundary layer Momentum Thicknesses in Compressible Flows written by Neal Tetervin and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Approximate formulas for the computation of the momentum thicknesses of turbulent boundary layers on two-dimensional bodies, on bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack, and on the inner surfaces of round channels all in compressible flow are given in the form of integrals that can be conveniently computed. The formulas involve the assumptions that the momentum thickness may be computed by use of a boundary-layer velocity profile which is fixed and that skin-friction formulas for flat plates may be used in the computation of boundary-layer thicknesses in flow with pressure gradients. The effect of density changes on the ration of the displacement thickness to the momentum thickness of the boundary layer is taken into account. Use is made of the experimental finding that the skin-friction coefficient for turbulent flow is independent of Mach number. The computations indicated that the effect of density changes on the momentum thickness in flows with pressure gradients is small for subsonic flows.

Book Control of Flow Instabilities and Unsteady Flows

Download or read book Control of Flow Instabilities and Unsteady Flows written by G.E.A. Meier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to one of the most important topics of Fluid Mechanics in future and presents recent research results on control theory and applied control methods. Understanding and handling of control methods of nonlinear systems, typical of Fluid Mechanics, is the key to reduce losses and to improve the efficiency and safety of technical processes.

Book Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows

Download or read book Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows written by T. Cebeci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains revised and edited forms of papers presented at the Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, held at the California State University from 19 to 21 January 1981. The Symposium was organized to bring together leading research workers in those aspects of aerodynamic flows represented by the five parts and to fulfill the following purposes : first, to allow the presentation of technical papers which provide a basis for research workers to assess the present status of the subject and to formulate priorities for the future; and second, to promote informal discussion and thereby to assist the communication and develop ment of novel concepts. The format ofthe content ofthe volume is similar to that ofthe Symposium and addresses, in separate parts: Numerical Fluid Dynamics, Interactive Steady Boundary Layers, Singularities in Unsteady Boundary Layers, Transonic Flows, and Experimental Fluid Dynamics. The motivation for most of the work described relates to the internal and extern al aerodynamics of aircraft and to the development and appraisal of design methods based on numerical solutions to conservation equations in differential forms, for corresponding components. The chapters concerned with numerical fluid dynamics can, perhaps, be interpreted in a more general context, but the emphasis on boundary-Iayer flows and the special consideration oftransonic flows reflects the interest in external flows and the recent advances which have allowed the calculation methods to encompass transonic regions.
