Book Vascular Innervation and Receptor Mechanisms

Download or read book Vascular Innervation and Receptor Mechanisms written by Rolf Uddman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vascular Innervation and Receptor Mechanisms: New Perspectives reviews the areas of structure, function, and pathophysiology of the circulatory system. The text focuses on the role of neuropeptides and structural function of endothelium. The book begins with a brief discussion on the background of autonomic and sensory nerves in the circulatory system, which is provided in Chapter 1. Having established the basic studies in the circulatory system, the book moves to the discussion on the analysis of peptidergic innervations and peptides in vascular control in various disorders. The last part of the book features the clinical applications of neuropeptides, perivascular peptides, and vasoactive peptides in different diseases and regulation, such as cardiovascular regulation, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and migraine and cluster headache. The text will be a good reference to both students and professionals in the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine.

Book Basic and Clinical Neurocardiology

Download or read book Basic and Clinical Neurocardiology written by J. Andrew Armour and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progression of heart disease is associated with changes in the neurohumoral mechanisms that control cardiac function. The degree to which this neurohumoral remodeling occurs, even before overt signs of cardiac disease become manifest, is important for prognosis. To determine why some patients experience sudden death while others sustain life in the presence of severely compromised cardiac function, the neuronal control of cardiac electrical and mechanical events must be considered. Starting at the level of individual neurons and building upwards, this book describes the synergistic interactions that occur among intrathoracic and CNS feedback loops to permit precise control of regional cardiac behavior. On this basic science foundation, subsequent clinical chapters explore the remodeling that occurs in this system with aging, with the evolution of specific cardiac pathologies, and with the psychological concomitants of heart disease. Most importantly, these chapters provide unique insights into how specific therapies like beta-andrenergic receptor blockade not only affect cardiomyocytes directly but also mitigate the adverse neurohumoral changes that accompany disease processes, such as heart failure and essential hypertension. The paradigm advanced in this volume is that heart disease is a multifaceted phenomenon involving the interplay of neurohumoral, cardiomyocyte and structural elements, each of which depends on the other. With our cumulative understanding of these interdependent processes, new avenues for time-appropriate, targeted methods of treating heart diseases can be developed.

Download or read book RAMPs written by William S. Spielman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many GPCRs discovered, the calcitonin family of receptors comprise of members that regulate a number of physiological processes and are involved in many pathological conditions. Therefore, understanding how these receptors function is a critical question in the field. When Foord and his colleagues discovered that a single transmembrane protein called Receptor Activity Modifying Proteins (RAMPs) could modulate the surface expression of GPCRs of the calcitonin family, it widely opened the field of receptor life cycle. Hundreds of studies have confirmed the importance of RAMPs in the life cycle of this receptor family. Receptor biology is a rapidly expanding field and with the advances in cell and molecular biology and in vivo techniques, it is very likely that the field of RAMPs will explode further and many unanswered questions will be answered with in the next few years.

Book Neurogenic Inflammation in Health and Disease

Download or read book Neurogenic Inflammation in Health and Disease written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphological and functional studies revealed a complex system of primary sensory neurons that parallels the autonomic nervous system not only in its extent, but probably also in its significance. Neuropeptides released from activated nociceptive afferent nerves play a pivotal role in inflammatory reactions and pain, significantly modulate cardiac, vascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and immune functions and influence the protective, restorative and trophic functions of somatic and visceral tissues. Several chapters of the book deal with the therapeutic potential of a new class of putative pain relieving agents acting through TRPV1, the capsaicin/vanilloid receptor, a specific ion channel that transmits pain. - Neurogenic inflammation in historical perspective - Cardiac protection by nociceptive afferents - Molecular mechanisms of nociception - Sensory mechanisms in migraine pathophysiology - Vagal signaling of visceral inflammation - Neurogenic mechanisms in arthritis - Therapeutic implications of vanilloid-type compounds

Book Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Heart

Download or read book Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Heart written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 1276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reference that provides the foundation of the basic science aspects of cardiac function and dysfunction, bridging the gap between basic cardiovascular science and clinical science. Divided into two major sections on cardiac muscle and coronary circulation, the volume integrates all relevant aspects of the factors influencing the function of the heart under normal and several abnormal conditions. It also provides a foundation for understanding of the mechanism of action of various types of cardioactive drugs, including antiarrhythmic drugs and positive inotropic agents. This revised and updated edition adds 14 new chapters, including two on the molecular structure of ion channels, and several on the ionic channels of myocardial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells. Book The Endothelium

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel Félétou
  • Publisher : Morgan & Claypool Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1615041230
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book The Endothelium written by Michel Félétou and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation.
