Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume represent the formal proceedings of the Third European Symposium on Calcified Tissues which was held in Davos, Switzerland from 11th to 16th April 1965 under the sponsorship of the Laboratorium fur experi mentelle Chirurgie, Schweizerisches Forschungsinstitut Davos. This Symposium fol lowed the now established tradition of the previous Symposia held in Oxford in 1963 and in Liege in 1964. Participation was again strictly on a residential hasis. This year the Schatzalp Hotel provided a scenic and secluded meeting place high on a mountain side overlooking Davos yet close to the Forschungsinstitut in which the opening session of the Symposium was held. The papers and communications published in the volume are arranged in order of presentation and are grouped under the five main themes selected for discussion by the Symposium, namely, "Cell function in the formation, maintenance and destruc tion of osseous tissue", "Response of calcified tissues to mechanical factors", "Mecha nisms of mineralization and diseases related to mineral deposition", "Hormones and bone" and "Fundamental structure of dental hard tissues". The programme consisted of a number of review lectures given by invited speakers and of short communications in relation to each of the above themes. No attempt was made to record the dis cussions to the papers as, being a residential meeting, the more valuable and interest ing interchanges took place informally in small discussion groups and not within the time schedule of the prearranged programme.

Book excerpt: This invaluable and well-presented text brings together previously fragmented or incompletely elucidated data on the impressive recent advances in orthopedic nuclear medicine. The book begins by acquainting the readers with various anatomic, physiologic, pathologic and technical concepts crucial to understanding orthopedic nuclear medicine and its utilization in clinical practice. Subsequent chapters detail the diagnosis of skeletal infections, trauma, vascular disorders, metabolic and neoplastic bone diseases, soft tissue calcifications and joint disorders. A separate section is devoted to the use of radionuclides in the treatment of bone and joint diseases. A unique feature of this richly illustrated volume is its comprehensive and clinically oriented approach. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium in Human Biology provides an authoritative review of current knowledge and points the way to further progress in the understanding of this essential nutrient. In addition to considering the established importance of an adequate dietary source of available calcium for the formation of sound bones and teeth, there is detailed discussion of the part calcium plays in a variety of aspects of human metabolism. The book is written primarily for those working in the nutritional sciences and related fields. It will also be of interest to clinicians, nutritionists, and to those interested more generally in the biological sciences, as well as to those in the important sectors of the food industry which utilise or produce dairy products and other foods significant to the supply of dietary calcium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Xlth European Symposium on Calcified Tissues was held at Hotel Marienlyst, Elsinore, Denmark, May 25-29,1975. The main topics were: 1. cellular calcium transport, 2. vitamin D, and 3. osteoporosis. Seventy six of the submitted papers were selected for verbal presentation, and these papers are the basis of the articles found in this book. We hope that the book, which also appears as a supplement to CALCIFIED TISSUE RESEARCH has a form which will be adopted by organizers of future symposia of this series. The Organizing Committee wishes to express its gratitude to the Danish Medical Research Council (Statens Lregevidenskabelige Forskningsrad), to Tuborgfondet, and to Danish and foreign industry for their generaus financial support, without which the symposium would not have been held and without which the proceedings would not have appeared. Also, we wish to thank our secretarial staff, in particular Mrs. Karin Christensen for skilled and keen assistance before, during and after the symposium. We hope that the contents of the book confirm the view that the XI th European Symposium on Calcified Tissues, having an interdisciplinary character was important for future research in the field and for the treatment of patients with metabolic bone disease.

Book The Soft Hard Tissue Junction

Download or read book The Soft Hard Tissue Junction written by Neil D. Broom and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated throughout with actual tissue images, this innovative book shows that the soft-hard tissue junction is best understood in a biomechanical context. The authors describe their pioneering experimental methods, providing an essential structure-function framework for computational modelling, and thereby encouraging the development of more realistic, predictive models of this important tissue junction. Covering the three main musculoskeletal junctions of cartilage-bone, disc-vertebra, and ligament/tendon-bone, the relevant soft tissues are examined with respect to both their own inherent structure and their mode of integration with the hard tissue. The soft-hard tissue interface is explored with a focus on structural damage resulting from overloading, and its associated pathologies. Adopting a multiscale approach, ranging in structural resolution from the macro to fibril levels, this is a must-have guide to the field and an ideal resource for researchers seeking new and creative approaches for studying the joint and spine tissues.
