Book 1 Cours de Linguistique G n rale 1907

Download or read book 1 Cours de Linguistique G n rale 1907 written by Ferdinand de Saussure and published by Pergamon Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saussure's Cours de linguistique gnrale has been one of the seminal books of the twentieth century, having shaped modern linguistics and semiology, and having importantly affected anthropology, philosophy and literary studies. Yet the book was written by Saussure's colleagues, based on student notes taken during the three occasions when Saussure gave his lectures on general linguistics. For Saussure's first course, the notebooks of Albert Riedlinger are certainly the best and the most detailed. They have loomed large in our knowledge of Saussurean linguistics, but a number of Saussure's statements, as recorded by Riedlinger, have never been known to a larger public. Until now, those notes themselves have been unavailable, except in fragmented and incomplete form in Engler's unwieldy and hard-to-find edition of the Cours. Now, the best of the student notes to all three courses will be available for the first time as they were taken down in French, and have been provided with a facing translation, an introduction, and a full analytical index of terminology. With their publication, Saussurean scholars as well as students of linguistics and related disciplines will have at their disposal the most reliable source material for Saussure's thinking on language. It is hoped that this work will encourage those who take Saussure's principal ideas to be sufficiently known from the CLG to reconsider Saussure's ideas in their greater immediacy and in their development, so as to appreciate nuances of his thinking generally unknown until now. This edition presents Riedlinger's notes intact and in their original order. The notes are accompanied by an introduction and a full English translation of the text. Together with the other two volumes, it offers the best insight yet into the evolution of Saussure's thinking.

Book Bibliographie Linguistique de L annee 1999

Download or read book Bibliographie Linguistique de L annee 1999 written by Mark Janse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 1484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

This book was released on 1993-10-21 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notes taken by Saussure's student Emile Constantin were not available to the editors of the published Cours de Linguistique Generale (1916), and came to light only after World War II. They have never been published in their entirety. full record, is generally considered to represent a more advanced version of Saussure's teaching than the earlier two. It is clear that Constantin's notebooks offer a text which differs in a number of significant respects from the Cours published by Saussure's original editors, and bring forward ideas which do not emerge in the 1916 publication. They constitute unique evidence concerning the final stages of Saussure's thinking about language. English translation of the text. There has been no attempt made by Komatsu and Harris to turn the English into readable prose. Constantin's notes, even as revised by their author, retain the infelicities, repetitions, abruptness - occasionally incoherences - that betray the circumstances of their origin. scholars and libraries specializing in the subject. It should be of interest to scholars, historians and linguists interested in the history of modern linguistics.

Book Formal Models in the Study of Language

Download or read book Formal Models in the Study of Language written by Joanna Blochowiak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents articles that focus on the application of formal models in the study of language in a variety of innovative ways, and is dedicated to Jacques Moeschler, professor at University of Geneva, to mark the occasion of his 60th birthday. The contributions, by seasoned and budding linguists of all different linguistic backgrounds, reflect Jacques Moeschler’s diverse and visionary research over the years. The book contains three parts. The first part shows how different formal models can be applied to the analysis of such diverse problems as the syntax, semantics and pragmatics of tense, aspect and deictic expressions, syntax and pragmatics of quantifiers and semantics and pragmatics of connectives and negation. The second part presents the application of formal models to the treatment of cognitive issues related to the use of language, and in particular, demonstrating cognitive accounts of different types of human interactions, the context in utterance interpretation (salience, inferential comprehension processes), figurative uses of language (irony pretence), the role of syntax in Theory of Mind in autism and the analysis of the aesthetics of nature. Finally, the third part addresses computational and corpus-based approaches to natural language for investigating language variation, language universals and discourse related issues. This volume will be of great interest to syntacticians, pragmaticians, computer scientists, semanticians and psycholinguists.

Book Diglossia

Download or read book Diglossia written by Mauro Fernández and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the notion of 'diglossia' occupies a prominent place in sociolinguistic research. Since the 1960s, when the dominant sense of 'diglossia' was the complementary sociofunctional distribution of two varieties of the same language, the term has been applied -- often controversially -- to a growing number of diverse sociolinguistic situations. As a consequence of this extension of the scope of the concept, in combination with an increasing interest in the relationship between the role of language and the social structure, the number of publications in this field has risen exponentially over the last decades. However, despite the growing importance of the notion, up till now there was no adequate bibliography devoted to diglossia, while coverage in other bibliographies does not do justice to the number of works actually published in this area. This first comprehensive bibliography of the subject includes almost 3,000 entries; although the time span covered is 1960-1990, the book includes several dozens of entries from before 1960 and also a substantial number of very recent publications from the period 1990-1992. The selection of items has not been restricted to a specific definition of diglossia: all available publications in which the term (or one of its offsprings) appears have been included; moreover, when considered appropriate, some material relevant to the subject has been added even though the term is not explicitly used. The usefulness of the bibliography has been enhanced significantly by six indexes: (1) index of languages, (2) diglossia in literature, (3) historically oriented works, (4) pedagogically oriented works, (5) theoretical works, and (6) theses and dissertations.

Book Routledge Library Editions Discourse Analysis

Download or read book Routledge Library Editions Discourse Analysis written by Various and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 2235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse analysis is a wide ranging area of study that examines the features of language beyond the limits of a sentence — including vocal, written and sign language, along with any significant semiotic events. It has been employed from a number of interdisciplinary perspectives in an attempt to reveal a person’s socio-psychological characteristics through the practical analysis of naturally-occurring language rather than artificially created examples. Routledge Library Editions: Discourse Analysis brings together an extensive collection of scholarship that reflects the broad scope of the subject area, examining the relationship of discourse to a number of closely related fields including stylistics, pragmatics, speech, conversation, context, anaphora, grammar and psychology. This set, published between 1979 and 1993, provides a thorough grounding in this key discipline for students of linguistics and psychology, and social sciences in general.
