Book excerpt: This poignant play, written by current and formerly incarcerated authors uses, gripping truths and soulful dialogue to reveal the human cost of America's for-profit justice system. The story follows Omar, pulled back into the prison system after trying to lift his family out of poverty, who struggles to maintain a sense of humanity while fighting to keep his loved ones close. According to NJ.com, "From institutionalized racism to addiction to the prison-industrial complex, this is a play about a great many large, pressing social challenges, but at its core it is a play about one family and its struggles to remain united as their world steadily crumbles. Impactful, warm, and unrelenting, this play that began as an experiment turns out to be an excellent examination of the human cost of a harsh and inhospitable world." The main character, a parakeet named Charlie, escapes his cage and home and is guided by other birds, animals, and elements of nature through all four seasons on his journey back home. It is a story about responsibility, appreciating what we have, and learning from those who provide support and assistance as we find ourselves in various types of "cages" during our earthly life. The spiritual undertone symbolizes our journeys through the seasons of life on Earth as we learn, grow, and prepare for the Ultimate Homecoming in the spirit realm. As a Native American storyteller, the teachings of the four directions and spiritual symbolism for the various characters, in conjunction with my Christian faith and beliefs, makes Charlie's Cage a tapestry of words to be enjoyed by the children of every season."

  • Author : Michael G. Flaherty
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press

Download or read book The Cage of Days written by Michael G. Flaherty and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prisons operate according to the clockwork logic of our criminal justice system: we punish people by making them “serve” time. The Cage of Days combines the perspectives of K. C. Carceral, a formerly incarcerated convict criminologist, and Michael G. Flaherty, a sociologist who studies temporal experience. Drawing from Carceral’s field notes, his interviews with fellow inmates, and convict memoirs, this book reveals what time does to prisoners and what prisoners do to time. Carceral and Flaherty consider the connection between the subjective dimensions of time and the existential circumstances of imprisonment. Convicts find that their experience of time has become deeply distorted by the rhythm and routines of prison and by how authorities ensure that an inmate’s time is under their control. They become obsessed with the passage of time and preoccupied with regaining temporal autonomy, creating elaborate strategies for modifying their perception of time. To escape the feeling that their lives lack forward momentum, prisoners devise distinctive ways to mark the passage of time, but these tactics can backfire by intensifying their awareness of temporality. Providing rich and nuanced analysis grounded in the distinctive voices of diverse prisoners, The Cage of Days examines how prisons regulate time and how prisoners resist the temporal regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shaber’s winning sixth WWII mystery is her best yet”—from the award-winning author of Louise’s Chance and Louise’s Crossing (Publishers Weekly, starred review). When a body is discovered in a Washington bar, government girl Louise Pearlie is forced into a role of lies and deception. On a bitterly cold night in December 1943, Louise Pearlie and her friend Joe Prager are enjoying a quiet drink in the Baron Steuben Inn when a bloodstained body is discovered behind the bar. Although the victim had been a regular customer, no one seems to know anything about him. When it turns out there is a link to Louise’s top-secret work at the OSS, she is ordered to find out as much as possible about the murder while keeping the connection secret from those involved, including the investigating police detective. Although Louise has been trained to keep secrets, the constant deception is taking its toll—especially when she discovers that she’s not the only customer at the Steuben that night with something to hide. Will Louise’s silence result in an innocent man being arrested for murder? “[Louise’s] sixth adventure is a worthy addition to the franchise.”—Kirkus Reviews “Shaber does a fine job portraying the plight of alien residents in wartime Washington, besides conveying the hectic atmosphere of a city whose resources are stretched to the limit by an influx of new workers.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
