  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press

Download or read book Imperium and Cosmos written by Paul Rehak and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caesar Augustus promoted a modest image of himself as the first among equals (princeps), a characterization that was as popular with the ancient Romans as it is with many scholars today. Paul Rehak argues against this impression of humility and suggests that, like the monarchs of the Hellenistic age, Augustus sought immortality—an eternal glory gained through deliberate planning for his niche in history while flexing his existing power. Imperium and Cosmos focuses on Augustus’s Mausoleum and Ustrinum (site of his cremation), the Horologium-Solarium (a colossal sundial), and the Ara Pacis (Altar to Augustan Peace), all of which transformed the northern Campus Martius into a tribute to his major achievements in life and a vast memorial for his deification after death. Rehak closely examines the artistic imagery on these monuments, providing numerous illustrations, tables, and charts. In an analysis firmly contextualized by a thorough discussion of the earlier models and motifs that inspired these Augustan monuments, Rehak shows how the princeps used these on such an unprecedented scale as to truly elevate himself above the common citizen.

Book Magna Carta Latina

Download or read book Magna Carta Latina written by Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy and published by Argo Books. This book was released on 1975 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why another Latin grammar? The history of Latin studies is strewn with the dead bones of textbooks, conceived in enthusiasm, published in hope, and interred in despair. 'Magna Carta Latina' began in Professor Rosenstock-Huessy's son's failure in high school Latin, it flourished in teaching generations of Dartmouth students the mother-tongue of Western culture, and it found its way at long last into the precincts of theology. Can a generation that knows no Latin reason, philosophize, theologize, sing, pray, or worship? The authors of 'Magna Carta Latina' answer No to that question and set out to supply the missing language. In Latin's family tree, they assert, there are no black sheep or poor relations: from its earliest fragments to its latest use in our day, Latin is an organic whole. And the texts offered for study in this book bespeak this conviction. In one semester the basic grammar is learned, within a year a variety of Latin styles of moderate difficulty is mastered.

Book A Tall Order Writing the Social History of the Ancient World

Download or read book A Tall Order Writing the Social History of the Ancient World written by Jean-Jacques Aubert and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume commemorates the 65th birthday of William Vernon Harris (on September 13, 2003), when a group of his former students agreed to honor him with a collection of essays that would represent the wide variety of interests and influences of our advisor and friend. The fifteen papers in fact range chronologically from the first Olympics to late antiquity and discuss various questions of imperialism, law, economy, and religion in the ancient Mediterranean world. The essays share a social historical perspective from which they challenge as many commonly accepted notions in ancient history. The contributors acknowledge their intellectual debt to the formative scholarly acumen of William V. Harris, which adds up to the "tall order" of engaging with his work.

Book Imperial Roman Warships 27 BC 193 AD

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Empire was not only built by the strength of the legions but also by a navy that was the most powerful maritime force ever to have existed. It was the presence of this fleet that secured the trade routes and maintained the communications within the huge Empire. The superior design of their warships, coupled with skilled naval commanders such as Agrippa, Sextus Pompeius and Pontus Euxinus, gave the Roman Empire a formidable navy that could defend the coasts of the three continents under the rule of the Caesars. Featuring archaeological photography and lavish artistic reconstructions, this book reveals the design and development history of Rome's naval force at the height of its Imperial power. As well as examining its warships, it reveals the navy's structure and the tactics that were developed to make the most of Rome's naval design superiority.
