Book Historical Performance Practice in Cadenzas for Mozart s Concerto for Bassoon K 191 186e

Download or read book Historical Performance Practice in Cadenzas for Mozart s Concerto for Bassoon K 191 186e written by Sarah Anne Wildey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon, K. 191 has long been an important part of the Classical era bassoon repertory. Few composers of the Classical period wrote for the bassoon as a solo instrument, and even fewer still paired it with an orchestral backing. K. 191 not only is unique within the bassoon repertory, but also stands out in the compositional career of Mozart as being his first completed wind concerto, composed at the age of eighteen. Mozart did not write cadenzas for K. 191; therefore a large part of the performance itself is untouched by Mozart's hand. Depending on personal (or teacher) preference, the performer may write an original cadenza for the performance or use an existing cadenza written by a well-known bassoonist or composer. In either case, the cadenza is removed stylistically from Mozart and almost always removed from the Classical period. While there are many guides on how to write a cadenza in the Classical style, there are none specific to the bassoon and its capabilities, strengths, or weaknesses during this period. Also lacking is an informational resource that critiques cadenzas on how they adhere to or stray from Classical performance practice, and more specifically to the performance abilities of the bassoon. A document that analyzes the abilities of the Classical era bassoon would be a useful guide in an era where accurate performance practice is increasingly sought after, even expected, in live performance.

Book An In depth Look at Mozart s Bassoon Concerto in B flat K 191

Download or read book An In depth Look at Mozart s Bassoon Concerto in B flat K 191 written by Andrew Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This creative project presents a look at the background of Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra in B-flat Major, K. 191, its form and ornamentation. The Concerto was written in 1774 and was believed to have been written for Thaddeus Von Durnitz. It was also written for a bassoon that is entirely different than the ones modern performers have become accustomed to, with less keywork and reeds that were designed entirely differently. The first movement of the work is a standard sonata allegro form, movement two is a condensed da capo aria form with two primary musical themes and the third movement is in a rondo form, which utilizes a repeated "rondo theme" to create cohesion and is broken up by episodes from the soloist. This paper details the different types of ornamentation throughout the piece. Included are performance suggestions on whether trills should be performed as "Upper-note" or "main-note" trills as well suggestions on how to treat the vorschlage markings. Musical context and the denomination of the markings are used to determine how to perform the ornaments.

Book The Signifier and the Signified

Download or read book The Signifier and the Signified written by F. Noske and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected in this volume deal with the interpretation of opera. In most cases the results are based on structural analysis, a concept which may require some clarification in this context. During the past de cade 'structure' and 'structural' have become particularly fashionable terms lacking exact denotation and used for the most divergent purposes. As employed here, structural analysis is concerned with such concepts as 'relationship', 'coherence' and 'continuity', more or less in contrast to formal analysis which deals with measurable material. In other words, I have analysed the structure of an opera by seeking and examining factors in the musico-dramatic process, whereas analysts of form are generally preoccupied with the study of elements contained in the musical object. Though admittedly artificial, the dichotomy of form and structure may elucidate the present situation with regard to the study of opera. Today, nearly one hundred years after the death of Wagner, the proclaimed anti thesis of Oper und Drama is generally taken for what it really was: a means to propagate the philosophy of its inventor. The conception of opera (whether 'continuous' or composed of 'numbers') as a special form of drama is no longer contested. Nevertheless musical scholarship has failed to draw the consequences from this view and few scholars realize the need to study general theory of drama and more specifically the dramatic experience.

Book Revolutionizing Children s Records

Download or read book Revolutionizing Children s Records written by David Bonner and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young People's Records and Children's Record Guild were the first commercially significant record clubs in the world. By applying proven book club methods to the field of phonograph records, these two related companies attracted some hundred thousand subscribers at their peak and serviced perhaps a million members in their existence. Revolutionizing Children's Records: The Young People's Records and Children's Record Guild Series, 1946-1977 tells the history of YPR/CRG, explaining how these two labels intersected important developments in the histories of mass marketing, recording technology, educational philosophy, folk music, contemporary composition, and Cold War politics. David Bonner covers in detail the history of YPR/CRG, tracing its influences back to the beginnings of music education in the 19th Century and incorporating the impact of the American folk music revival on music educators. The narrative follows the career paths of the company principals, such as its progressive founder Horace Grenell; the musicians who recorded for him, like American folk music revival pioneer Tom Glazer; and the record industry offshoots they created in the process. Bonner considers advances the club made in recording technology as the first record label devoted exclusively to "unbreakable" vinyl discs and provides a comprehensive summary of record club marketing, including the application of "music appreciation" to phonograph records. He also charts the commercial, critical, and political response to these endeavors, including an historical footnote to the "Red Scare" unavailable in existing Cold War literature. A complete and detailed discography listing every YPR and CRG recording, including all known writers and performers, concludes this excellent reference for scholars, nostalgists, and phonographic fanatics.
