Book Printed Advertisement 1947 1970

Download or read book Printed Advertisement 1947 1970 written by Chilka Ghosh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explains the politics of the patterns of the advertisements printed in the newspapers published in Bengal between 1947 and 1970, and the sociology of the encounter of the Bengali middleclass with these. Many of the cited advertisements were meant for the entire country but regional particularities were pronounced during the period under review, and the bhadralok consciously maintained a unique constructed identity that dates back to the colonial epoch. Therefore, their encounter with these advertisements too had regional peculiarities. The advertising texts of this period frequently referred to nationalism, tradition and work ethics, and were remarkably sober and controlled, compared to modern advertisements. Nevertheless, they contrived to reiterate the existing and emerging desires of probable consumers. The idiom of those advertisements prescribed a lifestyle and consumption pattern for the most volatile class, ready to satisfy their desires, if only symbolically, through consumption, and prepared the ground for present-day advertisements. The language was restrained only because the market culture was still weak then, and some traditional values had persisted, among the probable consumers, because of the objective conditions. But even without those advertisements, such traditional values would not have been perpetual, though present-day advertisements would have to grope for a language required to encourage consumerism.

Book excerpt: A new novel from Wole Soyinka prize-winning author of Everything Good Will Come. Lagos, January 1976, six years after the Nigerian Civil War. A new military regime has been in power for six months, but rumors are spreading that a countercoup is imminent. At an art exhibition in the affluent Ikoyi neighborhood, Remi Lawal, a Nigerian woman who runs her own greeting-card shop, meets Frances Cooke, who introduces herself as an American art dealer, in Nigeria to buy rare beads. They become friends and over the next few weeks confide in each other about their aspirations, loyalties, marriage, motherhood?and Nigeria itself, as hospitable Remi welcomes the enigmatic Frances into her world. Remi’s husband, Tunde, naturally suspects Frances—like any American in Lagos—of gathering intelligence for the CIA, yet she is unconvinced. Cynical about the country’s unending instability, and alienated by the shallowness of the city’s elite, she willingly shares her views with Frances. But the February 13 assassination of General Muhammed prompts Remi to reconsider one particular conversation with her new acquaintance in a different light. Her discouragement overcome by a reawakened sense of patriotism, she begins to doubt that the bead collector is who she claims to be. With her signature subtlety and wit, Sefi Atta recasts the international espionage tale by bringing the intrigue and politics of family life to the fore. The story of a brief friendship, The Bead Collector reveals one Nigerian mother’s yearning—amid legacies of conflict and uncertainty—to help build her country from home.

Book Women in Fifties Britain

Download or read book Women in Fifties Britain written by Penny Tinkler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contented housewives, glamorous women, jive-mad teenagers – all are common figures in popular perceptions of 1950s Britain. But what more did it mean to be a girl or woman in the fifties? And what are the implications of this history for understanding post-war Britain? Women in Fifties Britain explores the lived experience of girls and women, and the way in which their story has been told. Crossing boundaries – disciplinary, conceptual and thematic – and drawing creatively on new and established sources, it extends and enriches the terrain of women’s history. Diverse groups of women come into view, including farmer’s wives, university-educated women, activist housewives, working mothers, Jewish refugees, girls ‘at risk’ and private secretaries. Revealing that their private, public and professional lives were central to reshaping society, the collection engages with the legacy of World War II, and with questions about the distinctiveness of the 1950s. Embracing emotion, labour, gender, class, race, sociability, sexuality and much more, the authors offer penetrating exploration of established and new categories of historical analysis. Placing the politics of gender at the heart of Britain’s reconstruction, this engaging and important collection re-visions 1950s Britain and the women that made it. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s History Review.
