Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pine Cones and Cactus Blooms You are, nestling in your couch so high, First favorite of the hosts of sky, As an infant in her mother's eye. Amid your scenes so fair and Wild, Was I nurtured when a little child, And my soul to poesy was beguiled. Whether tempests rave, or zephyrs laugh, Your patriot soul soars above the raff, And sets up Old Glory's proud Flagstaff. Winter's snows cover your fair face, Softening all lines to a tender grace, As does a woman's charms, her silks and lace. The resinous airs from your pines give health, Your ranges and forests abundant wealth. High resolves from high plains creep in by stealth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New England Cactus: And Other Tales Her garden, like all Others on Sho shon, was of the old-fashioned variety, with Burgundy and white roses, pinks and box borders, and a tangle of holly hocks, phlox, and tiger lilies. From out this bloom the old gambrel-roofed house lifted itself like a huge fungus, and to enter, I pulled the bobbin, as Red Riding Hood does in the story. From the cheerful beauty of Prissy's garden to the bareness of her sitting room was a long step, though only across the sunken threshold of her door. This room was wainscotted after the fashion of the time in which the house was built, a fashion that had its origin in economy of hangings, but which we have come to regard as wholly delightful and de sirable. The low ceiling was arched in one corner to admit the top of the tall eight-day clock. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cactus; Or Thorns and Blossoms: A Collection of Satirical and Miscellaneous, Embracing Religious, Temperance, and Memorial Poems HE amiable and gifted authoress of this volume of poems has been long known to the writer. She is a native Georgian, born in the town of Monticello, June 13th, 1838, graduated in the Female College in Madison, Ga, July 26th, 1855, and was married in the same place, September 4th, 1862, her husband being, at that time, a surgeon in the Confederate army. In early girlhood, her poetic taste was manifested; and the composition which, under the authorities of the institution, she was required to prepare, as her last public exercise, to be read at com mencement, and before diplomas were conferred, was il lustrative of her talent for poetry and satire. It was a brief, sarcastic Poem upon the question supposed to be prominent with many young men in quest of a fair part ner for life, viz Has she any tin? A distinguished gentleman who was present at the occasion when it was delivered, afterwards wrote in relation to itz - I doubt whether another head in the vast assemblage could have perpetrated the like. This, with some others of her poems, have, I think been favorably noticed in Hart's American Literature and in The Living Writers of the South, by Davidson. The foregoing article, although an early production, is included in this collection. Since that period, she has continued to indulge heir governing proclivity, and has often invoked the aid of the myrtle-crowned Erato. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayside Flowers: Religious and Miscellaneous Poems Not like showy, rare exotics nurtured beneath the watchful eye and skillful hand of the florist, into a state of beautiful perfection; but like modest wayside flowers, of common form and hue, peeping, unobserved, from among the grasses along the rugged and winding pathway, are these simple, little poems. Not like the artistic bouquet of roses and camillias tastefully arranged by the exquisite hand of beauty; but like a bunch of wild flowers, a handful of cowslips and violets, culled in a country ramble, are these everyday thoughts and gleanings. Though they may soon fade from the minds of my readers, may they, at least, serve to brighten some heart or home, and leave there an abiding fragrance. At the suggestion of friends, "Has She Any Tin" has been added," which is the only selection from Cactus: or Thorns and Blossoms. Book The Burgess Flower Book for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Burgess Flower Book for Children Classic Reprint written by Thornton Waldo Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Burgess Flower Book for Children Because of the story method of treatment, and also because of the limited vocabulary of the little child, the use of scientific names and even the names of most Of the parts of plants and flowers, save in the appendix for older people, has been avoided. This necessarily prevents that accuracy of description which the adult may desire. The vast number of flowers, which is America's rich heritage, makes it impossible to describe within the confines of a volume of this size more than a limited number. NO small part of the task was the selection of theflowers to be included. Most of them were chosen because of their wide distribution. For the most part, only the commoner flowers, those most likely to be encountered in walks in field, meadow and woodland, have been chosen. A few of the rarer ones have been included because of their beauty, and the hope that the desire to find these may act as a stimulant to interest.
