Book excerpt: The DiBiasi family thought that their only problem was to resolve the ultimate ownership of the cabin in Munds Park, Arizona when the parents pass away. The five adult siblings are frustrated about how their parents are trying to settle the issue. That turns out to be the least of the familys problems. Complications arise as one of the in-laws is shot dead, and soon thereafter two dead bodies are uncovered by workers repairing sewer lines near the Coconino National Forest. The lawyer for Emil and Rosemary DiBiasi, Jake Jacoby, proves that he has some interests that are far outside of the law. Millie, a waitress at the Lone Pine Restaurant in Munds Park gives an assist to Detectives Orsen Carter and Wes Mitzer as they explore possible connections of some customers to the crimes. Sleuthing activity spreads to areas of Mesa, Phoenix, and Tempe when it is found that there is a relationship between the two separate crimes, even though they occurred 140 miles apart and little Lake Odell gives up an important clue. A little forest squirrel is an important character in the mystery.

Book excerpt: Providing the first comprehensive history of Canada’s songwriting legacy, this guide traces a distinctly Canadian musical identity from the 1930s to the end of the 1970s. The discussion shows how Canadian musicians have always struggled to create work that reflects their own environment while simultaneously connecting with mass audiences in other countries, particularly the United States. While nearly all songwriters who successfully crossed this divide did so by immersing themselves in the American and British forms of blues, folk, country, and rock 'n' roll, this guide reveals that Canadian sensibilities were never far beneath the surface. Canadian innovators featured include The Band, Ian & Sylvia, Hank Snow, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, and superstars Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Lively anecdotes and interviews round out the history, but the emphasis is always on the essential music—how and where it originated and its impact on the artists' subsequent work and the wider musical world.

Book The Last Eve

Download or read book The Last Eve written by Roland Greene and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chose The Last Eve as the title of this book because early in the Bible study, we learn that sin first came into a perfect world by the first Eve. She was created to be a helper for the first man Adam, who was first created, put in a perfect garden, and given instructions to dress and keep it. Also, he was given for food all that grew in the garden except the fruit of one tree, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve, who was created after Adam and from a part of Adam, was told by Adam of the instructions given to him by the Creator; otherwise, she could not have known that fruit from that tree was forbidden. Her desire to elevate herself above that which the Creator had given her is precisely the desire of women today and the reason a once great country, the United States of America along with the rest of the world, has now become so divided. As the apostle said, we can be nothing and have nothing except it be given to use by the One who created us. Passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution giving women the right to vote gave her the opportunity she desired to again take that which is forbidden to her, to have authority over men (1 Timothy 2:12). The Congress of the United States is now nearly half women, who can be accurately described as the last Eve because like the first Eve, they have taken which is forbidden to them. They take part in making laws which have authority over men as well as women. At the judgment, those men who allow it will hear as the first Adam did because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife!

But despite the fact she’s facing a broken marriage and empty nest, and middle age is looming in the distance, memories of happy childhoods on the beach give her reason for hope. She’s determined not to let her husband’s affair with a grad student reduce her to a cliché, or to waste one more minute in a career she doesn’t love, so it becomes clear what Adie Lou must do: rebuild her life and restore her cottage shingle by shingle, on her terms. But converting the beloved, weather-beaten structure into a bed-and-breakfast isn’t quite the efficient home-reno experience she’s seen on TV. Book In the Pines

Download or read book In the Pines written by Erik Kriek and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The murder ballad holds a rock-solid position in US roots music and the Great American Songbook for decades. Telling the stories of sometimes true and often not-so-true-crimes and other horrific events, they are raw stories full of unrequited love, betrayal, life, and death. The song form stems from the Anglo-Saxon ballad tradition, where stories were orally passed on to a mostly illiterate population. Dutch cartoonist Erik Kriek was inspired by five old and new murder ballads — including songs by modern masters such as Nick Cave, Steve Earle, and Gillian Welch — and used them as a launching point for five special and ruthless graphic narratives that dig deep into the darkness of Americana, in which guns and religion maintain an uneasy balance.

Caden’s brother Aiden is many things: clever, powerful, vindictive. Unforgiving. And now, he’s also mysteriously free from the hellish dimensional prison that Caden had trapped him in. Meanwhile, Rae, freed from the threat of the eye-snatching, monstrous Unseeing, has once again turned all her focus toward finding her missing father. She believes the town’s shady alternative energy company, Green On!, might have the information she seeks, so she joins their internship program to get answers. Unfortunately, this means sacrificing her friendship with Caden, who wants nothing to do with Green On! or anyone associated with it. When a special assignment from Rae’s internship leads her to uncover an infestation of giant, flesh-eating centipedes that may be alien in nature, she needs to convince Caden to help her get rid of them. The two friends must learn to work together again, because this time, it’s not just Whispering Pines’s fate that hangs in the balance, but the world’s.
