Book Cabin

Download or read book Cabin written by Lou Ureneck and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by his From the Ground Up New York Times blog, a beautifully written memoir about building and brotherhood. Confronted with the disappointments and knockdowns that can come in middle age-job loss, the death of his mother, a health scare, a divorce-Lou Ureneck needed a project that would engage the better part of him and put him back in life's good graces. City-bound for a decade, Lou decided he needed to build a simple post-and-beam cabin in the woods. He bought five acres in the hills of western Maine and asked his younger brother, Paul, to help him. Twenty years earlier the brothers had built a house together. Now Lou saw working with Paul as a way to reconnect with their shared history and to rediscover his truest self. As the brothers-with the help of Paul's sons-undertake the challenging construction, nothing seems to go according to plan. But as they raise the cabin, Ureneck eloquently reveals his own evolving insights into the richness and complexity of family relationships, the healing power of nature, and the need to root oneself in a place one can call home. With its exploration of the satisfaction of building and of physical labor, Cabin will also appeal to readers of Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Matthew Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft, and Tracy Kidder's House.

Robert Ferguson, author of Scandinavians, explores the significance of a national icon in this charming, affectionate history. Turf-roofed and wooden-built, offering fresh air, breathtaking views and peaceful isolation, the wooden cabin home – or hytte – is a crucial part of Norwegian national identity. In 2016, Robert Ferguson and his wife bought a piece of land high up in the Hardangervidda, and on it they built a cabin. As the cabin takes shape, Ferguson learns how native Norwegians have married a new-found urban affluence to their past as a tight-knit rural community-nation, and confronts his own ideas about the dream-tradition of the hytte, drawing an affectionate but unsentimental portrait of Norwegian culture, society and landscape. 'Singular and captivating: the pursuit of a dream' Professor John Carey 'Illuminating' TLS 'An uncompromising journey into the dark cold north, to reveal the warmth that comes from deep community bonds' Tim Ecott

Book The Ultimate Log Cabin Quilt Book

Download or read book The Ultimate Log Cabin Quilt Book written by Patricia Cox and published by Collins & Brown. This book was released on 2004-08-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people, the quintessential quilt design is the block known as Log Cabin. The versatility of the pattern, both in terms of individual blocks and in the enormous number of ways in which blocks can be put together, or set, has given Log Cabin a unique place in the quilting world. Its origins are ancient, its traditions are long-standing, and its modern interpretations are widespread. The secret of Log Cabin lies in its simplicity. In its most basic form the block consists of a central square around which are stitched strips of fabric of uniform width. These can be arranged around the central shape consecutively or they can be alternated on opposite sides, and the key to making an effective Log Cabin design is the way in which the colours – lights and darks – are organised. However, much of the enduring fascination of Log Cabin is in its infinite range of variations. Different widths of strips can be used. The centre can be any straight-sided shape. Shapes can be added at the ends of each strip to create additional, secondary patterns within each block. And again, the choice of colour values – the juxtaposition of darks and lights – is crucial to the overall design. The book covers the origins of log cabin, step-by-step projects for the techniques used such as press piecing, strip piecing, courthouse steps, using folded strips and making a foundation grid. Another chapter explores the huge variety of log cabin designs possible, with many colour photographs of traditional and modern quilts. The way in which blocks can be combined to produce strikingly different effects is is also covered, followed by a 'workbook' chapter of full-page black and white quilt designs which can be photocopied and coloured in to show you in advance how a finished combination of blocks would look. Altogether, 'The Ultimate Log Cabin Quilt Book' covers every angle and answers any questions the reader may have on the subject.
