  • Author : Dmitry Samarov
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2011-09-01
  • ISBN : 0226734749
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Hack written by Dmitry Samarov and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cabdrivers and their yellow taxis are as much a part of the cityscape as the high-rise buildings and the subway. We hail them without thought after a wearying day at the office or an exuberant night on the town. And, undoubtedly, taxi drivers have stories to tell—of farcical local politics, of colorful passengers, of changing neighborhoods and clandestine shortcuts. No one knows a city’s streets—and thus its heart—better than its cabdrivers. And from behind the wheel of his taxi, Dmitry Samarov has seen more of Chicago than most Chicagoans will hope to experience in a lifetime. An artist and painter trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Samarov began driving a cab in 1993 to make ends meet, and he’s been working as a taxi driver ever since. In Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab, he recounts tales that will delight, surprise, and sometimes shock the most seasoned urbanite. We follow Samarov through the rhythms of a typical week, as he waits hours at the garage to pick up a shift, ferries comically drunken passengers between bars, delivers prostitutes to their johns, and inadvertently observes drug deals. There are long waits with other cabbies at O’Hare, vivid portraits of street corners and their regular denizens, amorous Cubs fans celebrating after a game at Wrigley Field, and customers who are pleasantly surprised that Samarov is white—and tell him so. Throughout, Samarov’s own drawings—of his fares, of the taxi garage, and of a variety of Chicago street scenes—accompany his stories. In the grand tradition of Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Mike Royko, and Studs Terkel, Dmitry Samarov has rendered an entertaining, poignant, and unforgettable vision of Chicago and its people.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Bressani Literary Prize • A Globe and Mail Book of the Year • A CBC Books Best Canadian Nonfiction of 2021 In conversations with drivers ranging from veterans of foreign wars to Indigenous women protecting one another, Di Cintio explores the borderland of the North American taxi. “The taxi,” writes Marcello Di Cintio, “is a border.” Occupying the space between public and private, a cab brings together people who might otherwise never have met—yet most of us sit in the back and stare at our phones. Nowhere else do people occupy such intimate quarters and share so little. In a series of interviews with drivers, their backgrounds ranging from the Iraqi National Guard, to the Westboro Baptist Church, to an arranged marriage that left one woman stranded in a foreign country with nothing but a suitcase, Driven seeks out those missed conversations, revealing the unknown stories that surround us. Travelling across borders of all kinds, from battlefields and occupied lands to midnight fares and Tim Hortons parking lots, Di Cintio chronicles the many journeys each driver made merely for the privilege to turn on their rooflight. Yet these lives aren’t defined by tragedy or frustration but by ingenuity and generosity, hope and indomitable hard work. From night school and sixteen-hour shifts to schemes for athletic careers and the secret Shakespeare of Dylan’s lyrics, Di Cintio’s subjects share the passions and triumphs that drive them. Like the people encountered in its pages, Driven is an unexpected delight, and that most wondrous of all things: a book that will change the way you see the world around you. A paean to the power of personality and perseverance, it’s a compassionate and joyful tribute to the men and women who take us where we want to go.

Book The Blue Room

  • Author : David Hare
  • Publisher : Grove/Atlantic, Inc.
  • Release : 2007-12-01
  • ISBN : 0802196438

Download or read book The Blue Room written by David Hare and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tony Award–winning playwright and screenwriter delivers “a witty, contemporary reworking of Arthur Schnitzler’s nineteenth-century shocker La Ronde” (The Mail on Sunday, four stars). Arthur Schnitzler described Reigen, his loose series of sexual sketches, as “completely unprintable,” and indeed, its premiere in 1921 spurred an obscenity suit. It was only when Max Ophüls made his famous film in 1950 that the work became better known as La Ronde. Now David Hare has reset these circular scenes of love and betrayal in the present day, with a cast of two actors playing a succession of characters whose sexual lives enmesh like a daisy chain. The Blue Room is a brilliant meditation on men and women, sex and social class, actors and the theater. With deft insight about the gap between the sexes, it takes the treacherous Freudian subject of projection and desire and reinvents it in a bittersweet landscape that is both eternal and completely up to date. “[Hare’s] play slides up on one insidiously—always suggesting more than they first suggest, planting depth charges in the mind, subtly laying a minefield in the self-confidence of one’s first impressions.” —New York Post “In the jungle of this city, sex is a driving force, a commodity and a need . . . This play could almost be a vividly illustrated Freudian textbook: the erotic drive in action, amoral and ruthless. Hare’s version is, in the deepest and most essential sense, completely faithful to Schnitzler.” —The Sunday Times “Hare—buttressed by Freud and Proust—has turned sexual disappointment into something more interesting, the idea that what we are in love with is part illusion.” —The Observer

Book Park Rose

Download or read book Park Rose written by Tiffaney Dulaney and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Park Rose is a story based on actual events that occurred in my life growing up. I titled the book Park Rose because Park Rose was a street I lived on in Duarte, California, a very nice, quiet neighborhood in the Monrovia area. Our house wasn't right in the middle of the neighborhood, but I'm sure all the screams and sounds coming from that house made it the center of the neighborhood attention. I will never forget the things that occurred on Park Rose and in my life thereafter. God has brought me a might long way. Without God, I know I would not be here being able to share my testimony with you all. I also wanted to make awareness to mental illness. Enduring through years of abuse, my mother was not able to care for us appropriately anymore. She is not able to care for herself today. Abuse doesn't just end when the abuse stops; it continues for years without the proper help.

Book excerpt: Four young and naïve college students from Minnesota were seeking an organization to help immigrants assimilate into the culture and laws of the United States. They all agreed to work with a group of other college students in the Somali Adult Literacy Training group located in an area called Little Mogadishu just outside of downtown Minneapolis. The leader of the Mosque located in the area agreed to allow the group to do their work under strict conditions. Some years later, those conditions caused those four individuals to involuntarily become involved in a criminal enterprise in which they thought were being run by the Mosque while generating millions of dollars. The criminal activity was actually a sting in which those four individuals, and others, were not even aware of exactly who had taken control of the Sting. Unbeknownst to them, the sting was based out of Aruba and other major cities throughout the United States. During the two year sting operation several murders, thought to be related to the sting, occurred in Aruba. This book takes the reader into the undercover world of the FBI and Aruba police to determine who and why the murders occurred. It sets forth the mystery of several stings causing all four individuals, and others, to become suspects in both the murders and the illegal operations by the Mosque. It further reveals the mystery of who committed the murders as well as who was actually involved in reaping the large sums of money generated by the complicated schemes.
