Book C zanne and the End of Impressionism

Download or read book C zanne and the End of Impressionism written by Richard Shiff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.

Book excerpt: Also explored here is the artist's preoccupation with several themes and motifs - Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers, and still lifes. Unprecedented in the literature on Cezanne is this volume's comprehensive review of the critical response that the artist's work has evoked, both in his lifetime and afterward. Francoise Cachin, Director of the Musees de France, discusses the years from 1865 to the artist's death in 1906, and Joseph J. Rishel, Curator of European Painting before 1900 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, writes on the years from 1907 to the present. Their extensive quotations from newspaper reviews, monographs, and journal articles by writers from Emile Zola to Meyer Schapiro offer readers the means to evaluate for themselves the many contradictory interpretations of Cezanne's legacy that have been put forth over the last century.

What, perhaps, they don't know is that he was best friends with French novelist Émile Zola until a disagreement ended their friendship of 34 years; that his work was rejected by the Salon and mainstream art schools before his unique style received critical acclaim; that he died from pneumonia after refusing to stop painting in a thunderstorm; and that, in 2011, his iconic artwork The Card Players was sold for more than $250 million. This book presents an instant impression of his life, work and fame, with an array of irresistible facts and figures converted into infographics to reveal the artist behind the pictures.
