Book Masterpieces of American Modernism

Download or read book Masterpieces of American Modernism written by William C. Agee and published by Merrell. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernism, referring to the period dating roughly from the late 19th century through 1970, is regarded as a crucial moment in the history of American art. Although Modernist artists adopted a wide range of styles, they were tied by a desire to interpret the rapidly changing nature of society, and to cast aside the conventions of representational art. Some, such as Stuart Davis and Joseph Stella, responded to consumerism, urbanism, and industrial technology, while others, such as Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe, found inspiration in nature and the traditional Native American culture of the Southwest. This magnificent new book presents the works of the Vilcek Collection, an unparalleled private collection of American Modernist art. Jan and Marica Vilcek acquired their first American Modernist work in 2001, and have since assembled an amazing collection of masterworks representative of a crucial moment in the history of American art. Art historian Lewis Kachur explores almost 100 rarely seen paintings, works on paper, and sculptures by more than 20 leading artists active during the first half of the last century, while William C. Agee contributes an authoritative introduction. Lavishly illustrated throughout, Masterpieces of American Modernism offers an outstanding overview of the radical shift in art that this movement represents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical re-evaluation of American modernism The importance of American artists in the history of modern art is well-known and well-documented, from Jackson Pollock to Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol. However, the work of such artists did not spontaneously appear after World War II, nor was it simply transplanted from Europe. There is a longer, subtler history of the development of modernism in relation to American artists, as well as teachers, patrons and collectors, which can be traced through the first half of the twentieth century. William C. Agee's analysis includes artists working in the first half of the century, such as Arthur Dove, Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, and John Marin, as well as a discussion of the continuity between this period and the artists who went on to become celebrated internationally, such as Arshile Gorky, Edward Hopper, Helen Frankenthaler, Willem de Kooning, Morris Louis, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Donald Judd. Agee also integrates the work of certain European artists who became central to modern American art. Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp and Piet Mondrian as well as Josef Albers and Hans Hofmann became influential teachers (and eventually American citizens), impacting strongly on the likes of Stuart Davis and many others, who have not necessarily been compared or connected to the European art canon previously. As a radical re-evaluation of art history from the early twentieth century to the late 1960s, this brilliant new account of American modernism is a must-read for students and scholars of art as well as all those interested in modernism and its wider cultural history.

Book American Modernism Across the Arts

Download or read book American Modernism Across the Arts written by Jay Bochner and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Modernism across the Arts expands our vision of the modernist impulse by taking the arts together. Each of the essays in this book ranges between the arts, or between the arts and other cultural manifestations: from writing to painting, photography to architecture, art to the mall, or women's work to autobiography. Such interdisciplinarity collapses artistic compartements to bring a healthy new relevance to a study of an American modernism that is grounded in an adventurous avant-garde culture. The corpus spans modernism in all its states: Gertrude Stein, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alfred Stieglitz, George Gershwin, Ezra Pound, Hart Crane, as well as Djuna Barnes, Robert McAlmon, Elsa von Freitag-Lorinhoven, Randolph Bourne, Margaret Anderson, and Carl Van Vechten.

Book The Eight and American Modernisms

Download or read book The Eight and American Modernisms written by Peter John Brownlee and published by Terra Foundation for the Arts. This book was released on 2009 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frustrated by the art world’s elitism and the snobbish exclusivity of the academy’s juries, eight American painters united in 1908 to upend the establish norms and stage their own exhibition of modernist art. Led by the charismatic Robert Henri, they came to be known as "The Eight," and their two-week show at New York’s Macbeth Galleries drew a multitude of visitors, who crowded into the galleries to critique the much-publicized work of these "revolutionary" artists. Their paintings of urban scenes marked a significant departure from the prevailing style—which emphasized physical and natural beauty—and met with critical success. The established chronicle maintains that the Eight were rendered dysfunctional and artistically irrelevant after European modernism arrived in the United States at the 1913 Armory Show. The Eight and American Modernisms revises this account and reevaluates these respected artists’ careers, including their late works. Accompanying a traveling exhibition, this lushly illustrated volume challenges the accepted wisdom about the evolution of the modernist style. In addition to Henri, "The Eight" included William Glackens, George Luks, Everett Shinn, John French Sloan, Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast.
