Book excerpt: This 1976 book was the first full-length study in English of the poetry of the Peruvian César Vallejo (1892-1938). A major poet, who approached the problem of revolutionary aesthetics in a manner radically different from that of his contemporaries, Vallejo was comparatively little known outside the Spanish-speaking world. This neglect is attributable to the difficulty of a poetry which deliberately resists interpretation and assimilation into the established order of things. Professor Franco's book is therefore an exploration of the problems of poetic production. In the opening biographical chapter, she shows the kind of social constraints which limited what the poet could say, which led him in Trilce (1922) to write a hermetic poetry using euphemism, pun and indirection. She goes on to explore Vallejo's later poetry, which was shaped by the Spanish Civil War and gestures towards the tentative nature of humanity and civilisation that gives the poetry its abiding relevance.

Silence in poetry has been heretofore undertheorized, as most books that engage this topic are scholarly monographs focused on a single writer's work, such as Therese Lentfoer's Words and Silence: On the Poetry of Thomas Merton and Jean Franco's Cesar Vallejo: The Dialectics of Poetry and Silence, both of which are, at this point, a bit dated. Kazim Ali's Orange Alert: Essays on Poetry, Art, and the Architecture of Silence may very well be the only recent study of silence and poetry, and does not foreground stylistically innovative work. These scholars clearly recognize that silence offers invaluable insight into the possibilities for a reader's imaginative work within a given text. After all, it is the space between things that makes room for the reader's imagination, and allows room for the other to speak. However, a broader survey of silence in innovative contemporary and historical poetry will offer insight into the full range of approaches to the work that silence can do in poetry. This book engages examples ranging from dramatic verse to lyric fragments and prose poetry. Given these poets' commitment to social justice, the readerly possibility in these texts' gaps and elisions is rife with real-world implications, as the reader's imaginative work in these texts almost always extends beyond the realm of language, literature, and the arts.

Book excerpt: Intimate Relations remaps the discussion on gender and the nation in South Asia through a close study of the domestic novel as a literary genre and a tool for social reform. As a product of the intersection of literary and social reform movements, in the late nineteenth century the domestic novel became a site for literary innovation and also for rethinking women’s roles in society and politics. Krupa Shandilya focuses primarily on social reform movements that negotiated the intimate relations between men and women in Hindu and Muslim society, namely, the widow remarriage act in Bengal (1856) and the education of women promoted by the Aligarh movement (1858–1900). Both movements were invested in recovering woman as a “respectable” subject for the Hindu and Muslim nation, where respectability connoted asexual spirituality. While most South Asian literary scholarship has focused on a normative Hindu woman, Intimate Relations couples discussion of the representation of the widow in bhadralok (upper-caste, middle-class) society with that of the courtesan of sharif (upper-class, Muslim, feudal) society in Bengali and Urdu novels from the 1880s to the 1920s. By drawing together their disparate histories in the context of contemporaneous social reform movements, Shandilya reflects on the similarities of Hindu and Islamic constructions of the gendered nation.
